Good morning – it’s Tuesday, October 11, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
Most start-ups fail because they run out of cash. The idea is good, the execution is there, but the cash evaporates long before the owner expected.
Considering a start-up company? The first thing you should do is contact the Small Business Administration (SBA). They will provide you with vital information on starting your own business. Plus, they will help you navigate the process of starting a business and provide resources throughout that process and after.
The SBA has special agencies for certain communities such as veterans.
They will assist in the procurement of a loan and act as an advocate. The SBA has training for small business owners, and aid if disaster strikes.
It is essential for anyone who is starting up a new business to contact the SBA.
Prior to contacting the SBA, you should determine start up costs. Here are some guidelines:
You should plan for at least nine months of no income when determining start up costs.
Establish how long you can run the business without any income.
Determine one time costs versus ongoing costs.
Separate costs into two categories, essential and optional. What I need to have, versus what I would love to have. Once you have written out the two lists, put aside the optional. Don’t consider any optional costs until you have a firm financial base.
Take the essential list and break it up further; fixed costs and variable. Fixed would include rent, insurance, salaries and utilities. Variable costs are inventory, packaging, shipping, commissions, etc.
Always have some money set aside for emergencies or unexpected events. These are common occurrences with new business owners.
Before you purchase anything, weigh the pros and cons of the item. Remember, with any new business, cash is king.
Have all your finances written out in a clear and understandable format. Be conservative, not hopeful in your document. If you are asking for a loan,make sure you have represented your situation in an objective manner.
Understand that all local, state and federal agencies have their own rules and regulations concerning businesses. This can be very burdensome on someone trying to start their own business. Another reason to contact the SBA before you get too far into the process.
Be very conservative during the beginning stages, understand your competition, and what sets you apart from them. The SBA will also help you with this and even assist in marketing strategies.
Most people love small businesses versus chain stores, but when money is tight, sometimes shopping at a Mom & Pop rather than a bigbox, becomes a luxury many can’t afford. Customer service only goes so far, ending at the wallet. You need to stand out for other reasons.

When you know that you are in it to win it, nothing else matters and your quest is less about choosing from the limited jobs than it is from grabbing one of the limitless opportunities that are out there for you.
Here are a few ways to harness the limitless job prospects that stand before you:
- 1) Know that you are the best you can be in all that you do and that you can not possibly fail;
2) Embrace your confidence and realize you have the choice to walk away from any situation good or bad because there is another one, infinitely better waiting for you;
3) You can get any job you want by leveraging your internal and external allies and harnessing the intent of your actions;
4) You can create the job you want from any situation as long as you have the passion and the ambition to visualize and realize your dream;
5) Get out of your own way and stop believing there is a lack of jobs out there (despite the unemployment reports), and know that you have the skill and the ability to find, create and secure a meaningful job from all that exits.
You are the master of your own job search destiny whether you embrace that fact or not. Having the ability to see beyond your current situation and know that there is more out there for you will help you to stay focused on your limitless job prospects. Keeping the faith in times of trouble is a good way for you to objectively balance your ambitions from your fears and focus on the outcome of your efforts. There is more out there than meets the eye, know it, feel it and by all means go after it!

I have a well groomed beard, but I rarely see any CEO or other employees with facial hair. Is my beard hurting my chances of getting a job?
I don’t think facial hair is necessarily a deterrent in your chances at positioning yourself for CEO roles. Let’s look at some “bearded” CEO’s and you can decide whether their intelligence, or their hair stood in their way towards success.
Larry Ellison, Philip Knight and Paul Allen are just a few bearded CEO’s who come to mind and who have made fame with their name and not their bearded face.
Let’s not kid ourselves, your looks do play an important part in creating a professional image. However, like anything else, it’s how you carry yourself, and set yourself apart from the rest, beard or no beard, that’s going to get you in line for the next CEO position.
Focus on your assets, your skills, intelligence, qualifications and of course your image and don’t focus on what you think could be a problem because if you are uncomfortable, it will come across no matter what position you are considering.
Other than gaining new possible contacts, is there any reason to be on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn? Even if you get new contacts, what are the chances these people would put their reputation at risk, for someone they’ve never met? Has there been studies concerning the effectiveness of social media?
Social media allows you to cast the widest net possible. The good news is you get more bang for your job-seeking buck, the bad news is your buck doesn’t go very far these days.
What these social networking sites offer is a way to reach a large mass at a single time. You just never know, to your point, who exactly is in a position to find what you “tweet” compelling enough to consider you for a job. That applies to Facebook as well for that matter.
LinkedIn although the “professionals” choice, can become so overwhelming with unsolicited requests to “connect” you really have to become an expert in learning how to mine, navigate to your next career connection.
I think the best way to use LinkedIn is to ask for a referral from your existing network to connect to someone in a company that you may be interested in applying to. This way it adds some credibility instead of sending a request to get connected without any context.
Knowing your audience even when you don’t actually “know” your audience helps you make inroads all the while being professionally courteous and respectful of people’s time. There are studies by many of the top consulting firms and Social Media Today and other networking groups post discussions on effectiveness of social media on audience participation on job boards and in particular whether anyone ever gets a job through any one of them.
Knowing how to position yourself through key words and descriptors helps to highlight your qualifications to the thousands of recruiters who use LinkedIn to source passive candidates. So even though you may not have 500 + connections in LinkedIn, make sure you spend time creating a searchable and compelling profile so recruiters find you even though you may not be looking for them.

Univision Communications Inc. has established a Distribution Partnership Marketing Group (DPMG) allowing distributors to leverage the increasing Hispanic consumer base to deliver subscriber growth. Univision’s DPMG team will be headed by Jennifer Ball, SVP/Distribution Marketing. The DPMG team will help distributors integrate their product or service with Univision’s properties to connect with US Hispanics.
Effective immediately, Gannett Co. Inc. hired Tom Cox as VP/Corporate Development in charge of mergers and acquisitions for the company. Tom replaces Dan Ehrman in this position who is retiring on November 30. Tom will report to Dan Ehrman until he retires and after that will report to Gracia Martore, President/COO.
Tracy Anderson joins Entertainment Studios, Inc. as VP/Direct Response Advertising Sales, effective immediately. As of next Monday, Kenetta Bailey takes on the new position as EVP/CMO at TV One. Former ABC News journalist, Carla De Landri moves to Goodman Media International as Senior Counsel. Carla will assist Goodman Media with its growth goals in the areas of traditional and digital media in addition to lending her production experience in video and website content.

Big Coat Productions elevated Matt Hoos to the newly-minted position of Senior Producer. Matt has managed many episodes of Big Coat’s shows including W Network’s Love It or List It, Discovery ID’s Paranormal Home Inspectors, HGTV’s My Parents’ House among others. Additionally, Big Coat promoted Bob Kane to Director/Development up from Creative Consultant.
Dan Scheinkman began a new position as VP/Production, Development and Producer at The Hal Lieberman Company. Before this appointment, Dan was the Director/Development at Pauly Shore’s Landing Patch Productions as well as Pauly’s Manager/Producer.
Randall Barone advances to VP/Programming and Development with ABC Daytime where he will report to Brian Frons, President, Daytime, Disney/ABC Television Group. Randall will continue to manage the programming and development for the network’s talk show The View and new daytime show The Chew.
Armando de Castro was elevated to VP/Finance with Discovery Networks International (DNI) to direct the financial reporting and analysis efforts of Advertising Sales, Affiliate Sales, Content and Operations in addition to the consolidation and divisional analytic activities of DNI’s regions in Asia-Pacific, Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEEMEA) and Latin America. Armando is further in charge for all financial communications with DCI Corporate Finance, Investor Relations and Corporate Communications departments for DNI. Based in Silver Spring, Armando will continue to report to Doug Baker, SVP/CFO, DNI.
CNN has added Democratic strategist Maria Cardona and conservative columnist David Frum in time for the 2012 election season. The announcement came from Sam Feist, CNN SVP and Washington bureau chief.
Management consulting and executive search firm, Sucherman Consulting Group Inc. hired Angela Gardner as EVP/Development as part of the senior management team. In her new role, Angela will head developing business on the West Coast while based in Los Angeles. She will report to Erik Sorenson, COO.
AMC Networks Inc. appointed Rob Doodian as EVP/Human Resources where he will manage employee relations, staffing, executive recruiting, internal communications, compensation and benefits for the company its various divisions including the networks AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel, WE tv and IFC Films. Rob will report to Josh Sapan, AMC Networks President/CEO. Previously, Rob worked for Cablevision as SVP/Corporate Human Resources.
Production company Leftfield Pictures, behind HISTORY’s Pawn Stars, announced it has hired three new executives and promoted two:
- Brooke Meredith added as Senior Director/Development in charge of developing new formats and character-based series. She joins from KPI where she held the same position. Brooke will report to Rob Shaftel, VP/Development.
- Julie Louis tagged Development Producer where she will produce the company’s pitch reels and pilots. Prior to joining, Julie was a producer on various unscripted series.
- Shawn Witt named Executive Producer and he will manage two unannounced series for the company for ABC and another for Travel Channel. He will report to David George, VP/Programming. Shawn previously worked as an EP for MTV.
- Courtney Montgomery promoted to Head/Production to manage staffing and other departments internally at the company.
- Tonko Soljan upped to Executive In Charge/Production and will serve as the company’s network contact on all projects produced by Leftfield Pictures.
Nicole Sabatini becomes SVP/Marketing at NBCUniversal’s The Style Network to spearhead all marketing efforts for the network encompassing consumer marketing, ad sales marketing, digital and new media and brand partnerships. Nicole will report to Salaam Coleman Smith, President of The Style Network.
Shinebox, Inc. promoted Beth Chandler to the new role of Senior Writer/Producer, effective immediately. Beth is based at the company’s Pennsylvania studio and has recently been involved on campaigns for Syfy’s Ghost Hunters International and Scare Tactics as well as The Sportsman Channel’s A Hunter’s Life and Beau Knows Outdoors.
Effective immediately, Lenny Bart was named EVP/Research and Business Development with Entertainment Studios, Inc. Lenny will oversee the company’s research business for all platforms including cable networks, broadcast television syndication and online distribution. Lenny previously was with Debmar-Mercury as EVP/GM and before that spent 22 years at Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. Lenny is based at Entertainment Studios’ corporate headquarters in Los Angeles.
Tennis Channel elevated Bob Whyley as SVP/Production and Executive Producer, effective immediately. Bob previously served as VP/Production and in his new role, he will manage all facets of the network’s live, first-run and tournament coverage programming. Bob will report to Ken Solomon, Chairman/CEO and to Bill Simon, COO/CFO.
Gas Station TV (GSTV) is establishing a local sales division giving small business owners a chance to geo-target their advertising at a hyper-local level. In so doing, GSTV appointed Gene Sanderfield as the new division’s VP/GM. Gene joins GSTV with more than 13 years of experience including senior level sales positions at such companies as Screenvision Direct, Inc., Limelight Media Group and The United States Marine Corps.
National music television network, Fuse, part of the Madison Square Garden Company, added Liana Huth Farnham as SVP/Partnerships and Events. Liana is charged with increasing Fuse’s festival business by developing it into a music and sponsorship platform to connect with fans and artists. She will also work in tandem with MSG Entertainment to strengthen partnerships between the divisions, Liana will report to David Clark, EVP/GM, Fuse.
Christopher Averill was hired by SolutionSet MediaWhiz Partnership as CFO to be part of the agency’s executive leadership team. Effective immediately, Christopher joins from Lake Capital, a private equity firm based in Chicago. In his new role, Christopher will remain in Chicago and report to Zain Raj, President/CEO of SolutionSet MediaWhiz Partnership.
Twin Cities Public Television tapped digital and magazine editor Donna Sapolin as VP/Editorial Director and GM of Next Avenue, a new public media effort designed to serve and engage Americans 50+. Donna has relocated from New York City to St. Paul, MN for her new role which presides over a new website that offers in-depth information, perspective and inspiration for Americans to live their best after age 50. Next Avenue will also include television and community events.
Jane Yusim was hired by ITV Studios America as Executive Director/Development where she will be working with Bruce Robertson, SVP/Creative Strategy and his development team to create new programming for US broadcast and cable networks. Based in Los Angeles, Jane will report to Paul Reaney, VP/Development.
Katreese Barnes, the former Emmy Award-winning Musical Director on NBC’s Saturday Night Live becomes Musical Director/Band Leader for The Rosie Show on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network when the new daily talk show opens tonight at 7p. In her new role, Katreese will compose original music for The Rosie Show and lead a five-person band.
Christopher Cassel launched his own production company, Castle Pictures, Inc. in New York and will serve as President/Creative Director. Previously, Christopher was showrunner, director and writer for Manhattan-based KPI for thirteen years. Most recently, Christopher worked with executive producer Steven Spielberg as supervising producer/writer on the six-hour miniseries, Rising, Rebuilding Ground Zero that aired on Discovery Channel and Science.
