Roberts Broadcasting‘s Michael and Steven Roberts have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  The group includes four TV stations: WRBU/St. Louis (MyNet); WZRB/Columbia, SC (CW); WRBJ/Jackson, MS (CW); and WAZE/Evansville, IN (CW).  The Roberts brothers have owned and operated the stations since the early 1980s and the total debt of the four TV stations is estimated at more than $3 million and their assets are around $1 million.  Reorganization plans for the four stations will be prepared within the next six months.

Beginning next Monday, CNBC is taking its 11a show, The Call off its schedule. Instead, CNBC is expanding its Squawk on the Street by another hour to run from 9a to noon. Following from noon to 1p, CNBC will air Fast Money Halftime Report with anchor Scott Wapner.

Out-of-work professional chefs compete to become Executive Chefs at top American restaurants in Food Network’s new docu-reality series Chef Hunter premiering November 10 at 10p.  Chef recruiter Carrie McCully selects the chefs who will be tested by the restaurant’s general manager and owner in various culinary skills, business challenges and their tenacity needed to be an Executive Chef.  The six-episode Chef Hunter is produced by Smart Dog/Valencia Productions LLC.

MTV2 debuts a new original weekly series aimed at males called MTV2’s Guy Code on November 15 at 11p.  This half-hour comedic series will reveal the special code that exists between guys through commentators and animation segments as well as pop culture entertainers, comics, athletes and experts.  The series is an original production by MTV Networks and was developed by Ryan Ling who is also the executive producer.

Thirteen additional episodes of Home By Novogratz was ordered by HGTV for the series’ first season which presently airs at 930p on Saturdays.  Home By Novogratz showcases married designers Robert and Cortney Novogratz as they create uniquely original spaces for clients while raising seven children.  The second season of the series is set to premiere in April 2012.

National music television network, Fuse, part of the Madison Square Garden Company reveals its fall programming lineup. New shows include:

  • Last Call with Carson Daly, NBC’s late-night show, will rebroadcast new episodes after airing on NBC on Fuse Monday-Friday at 630p and 1030p. 
  • Video on Trial features a rotating pop culture expert panel as they analyze hot music videos with commentary, reviews and more.  Show debuted this Monday and airs Monday-Friday at 6p and 10p.
  • New Music Videos is a half-hour update on the newest songs delivered in a fast-paced format.  Airs Monday-Friday at 5p starting October 31.
  • Top 100 Hip Hop Hits is a countdown show highlighting the 100 most memorable hip hop songs ever.  New episodes will air Monday-Friday, October 24 to November 4 at 9p. 

Returning series on Fuse includes:

  • Hoppus on Music – On Fridays at 11p starting October 28.
  • Fuse Top 20 Countdown with new episodes weekly on Tuesdays at 11p.
  • Hip Hop Shop with new episodes airing Wednesdays at 11p.
  • Artist Takeover Mondays featuring Chris Brown on October 17; Drake on October 24; and Usher on October 31 airs on Mondays at 6a.

AMC’s Breaking Bad aired its season four finale Sunday night which ended the series’ highest-rated season to date with an increase of +24% over season three among A18-49.  Sunday’s season conclusion ran at 10p, 11p and again at 1a delivering 2.9 million total viewers over the three airings as well as 1.8 million A18-49 viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & COVERAGE ~

The upcoming 10-episode remake of Dallas, which will air on TNT beginning next summer, was picked up by UK’s Channel 5.  The British broadcaster acquired the exclusive rights to Dallas from Warner Bros. International starring original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray along with Jesse Metcalfe, Brenda Strong and Josh Henderson.  Dallas will begin airing on Channel 5 later next year after it premieres on TNT.  The original Dallas was a big hit in Great Britain for BBC in the 1980s. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

A new half-hour fashion reality series is on the schedule at VH1 for next January.  House of Consignment is a 10-episode series featuring Chicago-based entrepreneur and fashion expert Corri McFadden who runs the Lincoln Park retail store eDrop-Off.  At McFadden’s store, she and her team of 20-something fashionistas take in thousands of dollars in luxury brand items which are cataloged and photographed for eBay auctions.  House of Consignment is produced by 44 Blue Productions.

In other VH1 news, the network okayed a new reality series with American Idol judge Randy Jackson on board as executive producer.  Aptitude Test is set to debut in 2012 and features celebrities retaking their high school career aptitude test then going undercover for on-the-job training in a particular line of work that fits their profile.

Roseanne Barr sold a new multi-camera comedy to NBC titled Downwardly Mobile.  Barr created the series with her boyfriend John Argent and former Roseanne executive producer Eric Gilliland about a blue-collar family living in a trailer park.

Former Downton Abbey cast member Rose Leslie was tapped for a key role in HBO’s Game of Thrones, cites EW.  Leslie will play a Wildling woman named Ygritte that Jon Snow meets during his adventures beyond the Wall who is described as strong, smart, battle tough and able to survive in the wilderness.  In Downton Abbey, Leslie played the role of housemaid Gwen in the first season.  It has not been announced if Leslie will reprise her role in the second season of Downton Abbey which returns on PBS in January.

~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS and Univision tied for #1 among A18-49 Friday at 1.6/5 each, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Univision’s newer Una Familia con Suerte topped at 8p with a 1.7/6 and FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares was a step behind at 1.6/5 and CBS’ A Gifted Man was third at 1.2/4.  Univision remained in first place through 9p with La Fuerza del Destino at 1.9/6 followed by CBS’ CSI: NY at 1.6/5 and FOX’s Fringe and NBC’s Dateline tied for #3 at 1.3/4 each.  CBS then made it to #1 at 10p with Blue Bloods at 1.9/6 and NBC’s Dateline was next at 1.6/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Conde Nast has named Dawn Ostroff effective immediately to the newly-created role as President/Conde Nast Entertainment.  In her new role, Dawn will head the development, creation, production and distribution of original television, film and digital efforts based on the company’s roster of brands.  Prior to this present appointment, Dawn served as President/Entertainment at The CW Network from 2006 to 2011 and before that was President of the UPN Network from 2002 to 2006 as well as EVP/Entertainment at Lifetime Television from 1996 to 2002.

Nicole Ungaro was upped to Sales Manager of the Silver Team based in Chicago at Continental Television Sales, a unit of the Katz Television Group.  In addition, Jessica Harris was added to the Silver Team as an AE.

Former Syfy SVP/Brand and Strategic Marketing executive, Blake Callaway joins IFC as SVP/Marketing beginning October 31.  Blake will work to increase IFC’s brand position and marketing efforts through campaigns designed to spur ratings and revenue while reporting to Jennifer Caserta, EVP/GM.  In addition, Kim Volonakis was elevated to VP/Ad Sales Marketing, effective immediately and she will report to Blake Callaway.  Both Blake and Kim are based at IFC’s New York City headquarters.

E! Entertainment hired James Hitchcock as EVP/Marketing and he started yesterday in his new position reporting to Suzanne Kolb, President.  James manages and executes marketing efforts for E! encompassing advertising, promotion, brand creative, media strategies and brand partnerships for all E! branded platforms.

Sean Perry was elected as the new President of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society (HRTS) by its Board of Directors.  Sean, who is a partner at William Morris Endeavor (WME) will lead as President for the 2011 to 2013 term and he follows former HRTS President Kevin Beggs who is also President of Lionsgate Television Group.  Sean has served on the Board of HRTS since 2008.
