Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 9, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
ABC dominated Sunday night and posted an overall 7.4/18 A18-49 according to fast national ratings and time period averages from Nielsen Media Research. CBS was #2 for the night with a 4.3/10, followed by NBC 3.6/8 and Fox 3.5/8, with WB’s 1.5/4 finishing up. At 7pm the runover of NFL Football put CBS in front for the hour with a 4.7/13, while ABC’s first hour of Extreme Makeover Home Edition drew a 4.6/12. At 8pm ABC pulled out way in front with a 8.6/19, Fox followed with a 4.7/11, while CBS dipped to a 4.1/9. At 9pm Desperate Housewives nearly tripled its closest competitor, posting a 11.2/24, while CBS and NBC trailed, each with a 9 share. Fox’s debut of My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss was less than stellar with a 2.3/5, finding its biggest demo among M18-34 with a 3.1/8. At 10p the playing field evened out with ABC and NBC tied at 5.3/13 for Boston Legal and Crossing Jordan respectively, while CBS’ final hour of its Dallas Reunion special drew a modest 3.8/9.
Tonight’s Premieres: Fox: The Rebel Billionaire 8-10p Univision: Lo veremos todo con Niurka y Bobby at 10p
CBS has sent Clubhouse back to the locker room effective immediately. Filling the time period on Saturday nights for the remainder of the November sweep will be a variety of programming, much of it repeats.
Also disappearing from the sweep schedule this November is WB’s Drew Carey’s Green Screen. Thursday nights from 8-10p will be filled with movies for the remainder of the sweep, beginning with Save the Last Dance this Thursday. Also, Blue Collar TV will get a permanent home on Friday nights at 930p following Reba.
National Football League has extended its television rights for CBS (American Football League), Fox (National Football League) and DirecTV, for a five year deal through 2011. The broadcast networks will pay a combined $8 billion for the rights, with each scheduled to air the Super Bowl twice. DirecTV’s deal is valued at $3.5 billion for its 5-year extension. According to various sources, the money for the two networks works out to approx $4.3 billion for Fox and $3.7 billion for CBS.
Casting / Development / Production
NY based Mindjaz is developing The VAN, Voices Across the Nation, a news magazine series, currently in preproduction. Mindjaz will begin pitching the networks its project this spring. The series, dubbed a younger-hipper 60 Minutes, will be anchored by six reporters of different ages and ethnic backgrounds, who will conduct investigative reports on a range of topics from across the country. More info on Mindjaz: http://www.mindjaz.com
ABC has ordered up a pilot for a comedy with SNL’s Chris Kattan from writer Michael McCullers (Austin Powers movies), and produced by 20th and 3 Arts Ent.
Joining the lineup of Wednesday nights’ 60 Minutes will be Ed Gordon, a former BET correspondent who later worked with NBC’s Dateline. Gordon will be a part time correspondent for the show, his first contribution being an interview with Jamie Foxx tomorrow evening.
AMC has ordered up a new game show original series called Celebrity Charades, set for premiere in 2005. Just as the title suggests, celebrities play that ageless parlor game, charades. Taping begins this week with Chad Lowe, Hilary Swank, Kathleen Turner, Richard Belzer, and Jill Clayburgh.
Viacom station group is taking exception to the FCC‘s violation of $27,500 per affiliate arguing since they didn’t know in advance it would happen, they could not have designed the moment to “pander, titillate and shock” viewers, more specifically you can’t “design” something unless you have prior knowledge it will happen. No response yet from the FCC.
Carole Black has announced she will leave Lifetime as its Prez/CEO when her current deal expires at the end of March 2005. The search for her replacement by Disney and Hearst, partners in the network, will begin soon. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Black said: “People always say, ‘Someday I’ll go to Italy to learn the language. Someday I’ll go to France and study art.’ Well, someday never comes unless you make it come. It was really hard to make this decision because this is the best job I’ve ever had, and this is the longest I’ve ever stayed in the same job. But I think the time is right now for me to take a little personal time.”

Court TV: The Investigation Channel’s PARTY PICS ARE COMING SOON!
The History Channel presents This Day in History: 1989: After East German officials give permission for previously closed and fortified checkpoints to be opened, citizens of East and West Berlin swarm the Berlin Wall, breach it, and begin tearing it to pieces. The Wall, perhaps the most resonant symbol of Communism, surrounded the enclave of West Berlin, deep inside East German territory. Before its completion in 1961, approximately 2.5 million people fled the East.
