Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
11/08/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, November 8, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
An Open Letter to HR People Everywhere
I am a person looking for a job and when I interview with you, this is what I would like.
I would like for you to stand when I enter your office. When you don’t, I feel like cattle being pushed through the shoot. It’s very off putting.
I would like you to introduce yourself, call me by my surname and ask if it’s okay to call me by my first. I will always say yes, but you have shown me respect and put me at ease.
Please asked me to sit. My upbringing insists that I stand until invited to sit. Let’s avoid this awkward moment.
Smile. I like smiles, it let’s me know you are engaged and interested in my candidacy.
Treat me with respect. We both know that you have most of the power during the interview, demonstrate your character by not being a jerk.
Don’t ask me about my greatest weakness. It’s a stupid question that deserves a stupid response.
I’ve done my research on your company and industry, please do me the favor of reading my resume and cover letter prior to the interview. It is very uncomfortable to sit and watch you read.
I know you are seeing a lot of people today, but please treat me as an individual who is enthusiastic about working with you and your company. I am here for a reason, please respond in kind.
Ask me about me. Ask me about my experiences. Ask me about my future. Ask me questions that allows me to tell you why I am the right person for the job.
Explain the process, when can I expect to hear from you again, what is the company’s time frame and general procedure for filling this position.
Be honest with me. If you know before I leave the office that I am not getting the job, tell me. I am an adult, I can take it. I will ask for an explanation and I assume you will have a valid one. Please understand, the waiting, the not knowing is the worst part of this experience. If you tell me I’m not the right person, it will hurt, but it will also allow me to move on and not pin my hopes on this position.
Allow me to give you my best pitch by doing everything you can to put me at ease. This is a tremendously anxious moment for me, I may not be at my best. Please do everything you can to see the real me by making the interview as calming as possible. It’s good for both of us.
Ask me thought provoking questions. It’s important that you know I can make good decisions, and it allows me to demonstrate a solid process for solving problems within the work environment.
Ask me about the industry and your company. I have studied both, I want to show off.
Allow me to ask you questions. Be ready, because I am. I have them written down. No trick or dumb questions, just things I really want to know.
In summary, be prepared, be professional, be honest, interested and cordial. In this environment, you don’t have to be any of these things, but by doing so, you will form my impression of you and the company as a whole. In addition, I would really appreciate it.
Next Issue: The Return of McSnarky!
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
All is in a man’s hands and he lets it slip from cowardice, that’s an axiom. It would be interesting to know what it is men are most afraid of. Taking a new step, uttering a new word is what they fear most… But I am talking too much. It’s because I chatter that I do nothing. Or perhaps it is that I chatter because I do nothing.” Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky.
I’ve met so many creative people who tell me about their wonderful ideas for projects or for career moves: they know they are good but they don’t execute them. What is it that keeps them from moving forward? What is it about that job that we are sure we would be brilliant at but don’t go after?
That film we don’t make, the book we don’t write, the business we don’t start? Is it, as Dostoevsky suggests, cowardice? We love to chatter of our ambitions and what we are about to start. What are we afraid of?
It often seems that we would prefer to carry on with our low level of dissatisfaction than take a flyer on something we know to be good. Perhaps we are afraid of it not turning out the way we imagined notice I don’t say “failing” – but I have written before about Edison and what he can teach us here.
I know, I know, you need to keep your job the job you don’t love so much. The rent has to be paid. But when you sitting in your rent-paid house or apartment are you sitting there being vaguely unhappy, or worse?
Do not fear. Work at not fearing. Probably you do not actually have to make a choice between the status quo and whatever adventure is next. This is black-and-white thinking.
If there is some job you are interested in or some project that is clearly worth doing do you really have to throw everything up to get on the track? Almost certainly not. Once you have a vision or a sense of what it is you are going after break down the little steps you have to take to get there.
What is that first easy step? Is it some research? Is it an email to someone who can help you? Is it setting an hour aside to do a lousy first draft of a business plan? Almost certainly there is some small step that you can take to get on the road, and still not jeopardize the current situation that you..er..value so highly.
I know you have the ideas and can see the greener grass. Creative people always do. Stop chattering about it. Address the fear and take a small step to outflank it. Get going on it and give yourself something to look forward to.

I’m a reader and I’d love to see more about post-interview follow-up methods. For example, I had an interview on Thursday and I sent my thank you note (email) later that day. When do I follow up, what method should I use, etc.?
While for you this was The Interview (Capital I), a ceremony entailing its own mystique and set rituals for the interviewer it is just another work meeting in which they hope to find the answer to a problem and cross something off their list. So here is a suggestion. At the interview it is likely that you will speak about a topic that you would want to expand on later in fact I encourage this: whether it’s an industry development, or something you have experienced or whatever.
There are so many channels for that follow-up; everyone has their own preferences and comfort zones. I myself check email obsessively but am not so good at checking voicemail. So why not ask your interviewer how they’d like to be communicated with, so that you can continue the conversation in a way that suits them?
If you don’t have anything to add other than to say thank you then once is enough, if not more than enough. How many work meetings have you been at where a participant wrote you a special note just to say thank you and if they did, I wonder what you would think about that?
I’ve heard that some people have had success sending in several resumes and cover letters (up to five) for the same jobs, with only slight modifications to each. Do you see any benefit to this, is this for the scanners?
If this has brought them success then the benefit is clear hard to argue. But I doubt that the recruiter brought them in because they sent 5 different approaches. So do they have a way of knowing which version worked for them? That would be interesting.
Though you don’t want to be caught out as being unclear (or worse, contradictory) as to who you actually are.
I do think that sometimes a repeated communication can be helpful. The first one may have been misplaced or hit on the wrong day or disappeared down the inbox. But I would propose a different cover letter so that it appears thoughtful and doesn’t look like volume spamming.
As for the scanner, it will see each entry as distinct, searching for the desired terms in each one.
If you have terms you want considered, it is probably more effective to include them all in one document rather than submitting them separately. Often the scanners are looking for a particular combination of keywords and if you have included them in separate entries, then they will not be found as the pairing sought.
