Cynopsis: Sports
11/08/11

Good morning! It’s Tuesday, November 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The Pac-12 moved forward in its quest to become a shaker in the media world, announcing that the conference had officially aggregated secondary media rights for all of its members and cleared the way for the slate of channels of Pac-12 branded channels that will hit the dial in 2012. IMG College and Learfield Sports will keep the Pac-12’s local, national and satellite radio rights, as well as publishing, hospitality, in-stadium and arena assets. The move also pulls together the schools’ web portals allowing the conference to now sell advertising across all of its upcoming platforms as well as let the conference share a common technology platform with an aggregated audience.

On the Air

Sunday’s NFL games, led by a Patriots/Giants showdown, handed FOX the second-highest overnight rating for any NFL game so far this season. The game drew an 18.6 overnight rating, according to Nielsen. CBS’ regionalized early-game coverage, led by a Jets/Bills matchup, gave the channel am 11.1 overnight score, for a 14% spike over last year’s ratings. Meanwhile, NBC’s Sunday Night Football scored as the top broadcast on Sunday night, with a 14.2 overnight rating for the Steelers/Ravens game and a 23 share. That’s good enough for a 15% climb over last year’s Cowboys/Packers game. Top markets included Pittsburgh with a 53.0/71, followed by Baltimore, Las Vegas, Cincinnati and DC.

Meanwhile, final ratings are in for CBS’ LSU/Alabama coverage from Saturday. The game drew an 11.5 national rating and 20 share in final numbers from Nielsen to rank as the network’s most-watched regular-season game on CBS Sports in 22 years. The game averaged just over 20 million viewers and was up 161% from last year’s matchup between the same two teams.

CBS Sports has also made its pick for its Nov. 19 game, selecting the Mississippi State/Arkansas contest at 3:30. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will call the action, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson.

WWE reported that first day ticket sales for WrestleMania XXVIII in Miami have drawn a record gross of $6.3 million, easily besting the previous first day record of $4.8 million. Tickets went on sale on Saturday. WrestleMania XXVIII is set to take place on Sunday, April 1, 2012 from Sun Life

CBS Sports Network has inked a deal with Major League Lacrosse in a television agreement that will deliver 14 nationally televised games in 2012 to the network. In addition, CBSSN will also air all 18 episodes of “Inside the MLL,” the league’s 30-minute magazine show.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall told reporters that the Big East has approached the school about joining the conference as it seeks to expand with a western presence. The AP reports that Mendenhall said at his weekly news conference that “There is a push and there are conversations that are in place for the Big East to convince or to have BYU join that conference.” On the basketball front, BYUtv will offer up a look at the upcoming basketball season with the BYUtv Sports Special on Nov. 10 at 9p. The series will look at last season, introduce this year’s newest players and interview analysts about the new season as the team enters its first year in the WCC.

High school rights holder PlayOn! Sports announced that Bo LaMotte has joined the company as Executive Vice President, Distribution for the company. LaMotte will now oversee PlayOn’s distribution strategy with established and emerging media platforms. LaMotte joins PlayOn after having formed his own media consulting firm, Digital Media Distribution, which specialized in developing and implementing multi-platform distribution agreements.

CBS is set to run the 22ndannual Courage in Sports special on Sunday at 5p. The one-hour show recognizes individuals who have overcome monumental challenges to achieve greatness in the world of sports and will be narrated by Ed Asner. Courage in Sports has previously honored athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, Arthur Ashe, Kerri Strug, Walter Payton and Cal Ripken Jr. This year’s honorees will include Kortney Clemons, Gainesville State School Football, Aaron Wheelz Fotheringham and Kevin Jordan/Tom Walter.

Sponsorship & Promotion

The Kansas City Royals are looking to sell naming rights to Kauffman Stadium, according to local articles. The local NBC affiliate reports that the MLB franchise is in negotiations for a deal that could span the next two decades, including the stadium hosting the All Star Game next year. With the deal, the team could bring in an additional $3 to $6 million a year.

The Madison Square Garden Company and Steiner Sports Collectibles are offering fans the chance to own a piece of The World’s Most Famous Arena. From now through December 15th, fans of the venue will be able to bid on items such as the original lockers that were home to Knicks and Rangers legends over the decades, team locker room carpets, locker room signs, and individual player and team plaques from every season. Also available will be items and artwork from performances by Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, among others. Bids can be taken at PieceofTheGarden.com.
