Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 7, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
While nobody is saying for sure whether or not News Corp. will actually launch a new business news channel, Rupert Murdoch has secured a carriage deal for it on the Comcast digital tier. The New York Times reports that while News Corp. has not made a final decision to definitely launch the Fox News Channel spinoff, last month at News Corp.’s annual meeting Murdoch said the channel would definitely go forward in 2007. Combined with the News Corp. controlled DirectTV audience, the new channel could potentially kick off with a subscriber base of 27.5 million.
Tonight’s Finales:
BBC America: The Street at 10p
Oxygen: Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty at 10p

If you haven’t heard or checked out the website SecondLife.com, now may be the time because things are ramping up. SecondLife.com is a virtual world with its own economy and currency, inhabited by more than one million registered users who are able to build virtual second lives for themselves. Producers Endemol will be taking its Big Brother show into the virtual world, selecting 15 international SecondLife.com inhabitants to “live” a minimum of 8 hours a day inside the Big Brother virtual glass house. The contestants will be eliminated one at a time, until the last one standing receives a SecondLife.com piece of real estate – their own island, which in US dollars would be worth approx $1700. Endemol isn’t the only reality-based company to enter the SecondLife.com world – you’ll also find there Sony BMG, Toyota Motors, Adidas AG, and the Reuters news bureau. Note to self: Do you suppose they call it reality TV in a virtual world?

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1944-Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected for his fourth term as United States President. The only President to be elected four times, Roosevelt was seen as a guiding force through the New Deal and World War II. By the time he was elected to his fourth term, Roosevelt was frail and severely affected by health complications. His final inauguration speech was his shortest, a mere 559 words, as Roosevelt struggled to stay standing. The nation was still unaware that their leader was confined to a wheelchair as the result of polio.
