Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 5, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBC Olympics laid out programming plans for CNBC, MSNBC, and USA Network for the Winter Games where the trio of channels will combine to televise 124 hours of live coverage of the events. CNBC will offer up 36 hours of curling coverage via a daily weekday show. MSNBC will host 45 hours of live hockey and curling coverage. USA Network will air live curling and hockey, including three Team Canada men’s hockey games, as part of its 43 hours of live programming. These will, of course, complement the programming airing on NBC and NBCSN. NBC will begin its primetime coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics on Thursday, February 6, one night before the broadcast network provides its traditional coverage of the Opening Ceremony on Friday Feb. 7.
On the Air
ESPN is gearing up for Veterans Day with its fifth annual America’s Heroes: A Salute to Our Veterans initiative that will include live, day-long SportsCenter coverage from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, the Armed Forces Classic men’s basketball game from South Korea, as well as live television and radio programming from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, NY. The special SportsCenter will be co-hosted by Hannah Storm and Kevin Negandhi with interviews that include Commandant Bill Byrne, Admiral Michael Miller and members of Navy Dive team. In addition, Monday Night Football will see Gene Hackman voice a promotional spot leading up to the game that is theme to Veterans Day.
Golf Channel is bringing its Big Break reality competition to Amelia Island, Fla. for season 21 of the show. Big Break Florida will debut on Feb. 24 and feature a cast of 12 women competing to receive an exemption to the 2014 Manulife Financial LPGA Classic (June 5-8, 2014), exempt status on the 2015 Symetra Tour with all entry fees waived, cash and other prizes. “Big Break Florida is the start of a relationship between Visit Florida, NBC Sports and the Golf Channel that will showcase Florida as a preferred destination for leisure travel,” said Paul Phipps, Visit Florida’s CMO.
The New York Mets and Clear Channel Media and Entertainment are teaming up for the launch of a five-year landmark multimedia marketing partnership that will see 710 WOR become the flagship radio station of the Mets, broadcasting Spring Training, regular season, and post season games as well as the team’s pre- and post-game shows. The alliance includes Mets-related programming and promotion through all of Clear Channel’s multi-platform media assets, including radio, digital, outdoor and music/entertainment events that include digital, outdoor and in-game music and entertainment.
This week FOX Sports delivers a doubleheader of UFC Fight Night action beginning with a tribute to the men and women of the armed forces on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 5p with UFC Fight for the Troops: Kennedy vs. Natal on FOX Sports 1. On Saturday at 8p, the MMA promotion offers UFC Fight Night: Belfort vs. Henderson at 8p from Goiania, Brazil. As part of the UFC Fight for the Troops, the UFC will host an online auction to raise money for the United States Armed Forces. Fans can bid on exclusive UFC auction items or can make donations online with proceeds from the online auction going to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and The National Intrepid Center of Excellence.
MLB Network is turning to the Arizona Fall League to help fill up offseason programming slots, with the channel carrying six games in November. Contests be called on-site by MLB Network’s Paul Severino and Joe Magrane and Baseball America editor-in-chief John Manuel. The action begins tonight at 9p with Mesa Solar Sox/Salt River Rafters.
Outside Television announced a deal with Red Bull Media House for an expansion of their ongoing programming partnership that will see Red Bull Media House provide five more original series to the schedule. Programs begin over the next several weeks and include series The Art of Flight, Where the Trail Ends, Xtreme Collxtion, Ultimate Rush 2 and eXplorers Adventures of the Century. Documentaries include Mission to the Edge of Space: The Inside Story of Red Bull Stratos, The Felix Baumgartner Story, Felix Baumgartner: The Cave.
Sportsman Channel opened voting for the network’s viewer-decided awards program the 2013 Sportsman Choice Awards. Categories are set to include: Best Hunting Show Big Game Category; Best Hunting Show Small Game Category; Best Shooting Show; Best Fishing Show; Best Full Draw Show (bowhunting); Best Educational/Instructional Show; Best New Series; Best Host(s); Moment of the Year and Best Blooper. Voting officially closes at midnight on Sunday, December 1.
AXS TV series The Voice Versus will see Inside MMA co-host Bas Rutten sit down with host Michael Schiavello for a special hour-long interview on Friday at 8p. The episode will see Rutten share stories from his MMA past, including antics on the road, memorable contests during his career, and opponents he wished he could have fought.
MSG Network announced a new original series dubbed The AV Squad, that features New York Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault and will debut on Thursday, November 7 at 6p. Hosted by Bill Pidto, the biweekly program will feature Vigneault and other coaches and players, as they take fans on a behind-the-scenes look at the New York Rangers with special access to practice, film room sessions and in-depth player analysis.

ESPN is turning to DICK’s Sporting Goods to serve as the exclusive eCommerce provider of licensed merchandise and sporting goods on ESPN.com and related digital properties. The multi-year deal will allow fans to shop an expanded range of licensed fanwear available at the rebranded site, located at dicks.com/espnfanshop.
Grey Goose vodka signed on to serve as the “Official Spirit” of the PGA TOUR over the next three years. In addition to the PGA TOUR, the agreement also includes the Champions Tour and Web.com Tour. The deal will give the brand preferred brand status and positioning at all PGA TOUR- owned and operated TPC golf facilities and it will be featured at TOUR-hosted client functions throughout the year. In addition, Grey Goose will receive pouring rights at select tournaments on all three Tours, where the Grey Goose 19th Hole Lounge will be featured as a main attraction.
NASCAR announced a joint campaign with Official Partner DRIVE4COPD throughout COPD Awareness Month in November that will help drive awareness and encourage fans to be screened for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Throughout the month, NASCAR will make an assist with initiatives that include: the official NASCAR bar mark logo will feature an orange ribbon throughout the month and will be emblazoned on select NASCAR-logoed materials; Ogilvy & Mather, the agency of record for NASCAR, will produce a 10-second PSA scheduled to air across ESPN and FOX Sports 1; NASCAR Plaza building in Charlotte will be lit orange, and NASCAR will host a charity golf tournament in Miami to help raise funds and drive awareness across its Official Partner brands.
WWE Studios and Film Roman are teaming up for the animation business, announcing a co-financing and co-production agreement to produce up to thirteen, three-minute webisodes of a new animated series Camp WWE. The series, form the animation studio behind The Simpsons, will serve as adult comedy series about what the biggest, most outrageous WWE Superstars were like as kids.
Digital college sports network Campus Insiders added another all-star to its roster, announcing that former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown has joined the site to provide reports and insights on a host of college football topics. Brown now joins Bonnie Bernstein and Seth Davis as the most prominent faces of the network.
The US Pro Challenge announced that organizers are looking to fans to provide feedback on four different options for the final stage. After announcing eight of the host cities that will serve as starts and finishes for the 2014 race, fans can decide where Stage 7 will begin and end by voting on prochallenge.com.
Today’s episode of Neulion’s Digital Dudes at 1p will feature the UFC’s Edward Muncey and Steve McArdle from the NHL. The duo will discuss their digital strategies and how they have created a digital experience that engages their fans on every screen.

IMG announced that both Matthew Sganga and David Randell have joined the company where they will serve as Vice Presidents in the U.S. Business Development division. Sganga and Randell will be responsible for identifying and generating new business opportunities in the marketplace for business areas across IMG. Sganga was most recently responsible for leading the $30MM regional office across the entire Sports Illustrated media sales platform. Randell held a senior advertising sales role at Rural Media Group, where he led the sales strategy effort to increase ad revenue.
