Good morning – it’s Tuesday, November 3, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Thinking of Relocating?
You’re sitting at your desk and your boss calls you into her office. “John,” she says, “you are a valued employee and we’d like to see you stay with the company. Unfortunately, your position here has been eliminated but if you and your family would be willing to move …” Everybody hates to move, it’s a long and arduous process but sometimes employers will ask you to relocate. When times are this tough, the first instinct will be to say yes, but there are important issues to consider.
Professional
How much time and money will be needed to complete the move and who will pay and for what? As much as salary in the new job, this is a negotiable part of the package.
The economic health of the region. Are the region’s trends favorable for the foreseeable future? You can check on the state’s website for this information.
Is your industry well represented in the region or are there only a few companies doing the work you do? If you are laid off at your new location, are there other employment possibilities within your industry? One of the best websites for this information is www.acinet.org .
Will the new job be a good fit? Have similar responsibilities to your current previous position? You need to know as much about the new position before moving as possible, because once you get there, it’s too late.
If the subject hasn’t come up earlier, diplomatically ask that you and your spouse be sent (meaning on the company’s tab) to the new office for a few days so your new boss and the staff can get to know you and vice versa, and your spouse can scout the area re housing opportunities, schools, etc. Now‘s the time to find this stuff out.
Personal
Discuss the situation with your spouse and children. Listen to their concerns. They will probably hate the idea at first, so don’t be surprised. Give them some ownership in the decision.
Does the new area provide plentiful employment opportunities for your spouse?
If there is a different cost of living, how much will it affect your finances?
To avoid culture shock, experts suggest at least two visits, three to five days minimum, to the area prior to making any decisions. Very good idea, and will give you some ammo to help convince your spouse and the kids. The company should pay the costs. If not, evaluate the prospects of the move working out based on what you know to that point, and decide whether you want to spend the money. One way or the other, the scouting trip has to be made.
Will you be able to afford a nicer house/apartment? If cost of living and real estate are lower, it may be worth moving to provide your family with a lifestyle upgrade.
Do the public schools have a good reputation or will you need to send the kids to private school?
Are there playgrounds nearby for the kids, adequate recreation for the entire family, affordable housing in neighborhoods that appeal to you? All the stuff that will inform your decision about life in the new town.
Do you have business or personal contacts in the region? This will make the move easier, from advice on the business culture to the neighborhood’s best dry cleaner. Additionally, the more people you know in a new area, the more opportunities you’ll have to meet new people, and the quicker your family can assimilate into your new surroundings.
How much time will you have between jobs to get everything moved and settled?
All these issues must be addressed prior to making a final decision. Starting a new job is stressful enough, add the stresses of moving to a new location and you have a real handful. By gathering as much information as you can, you will minimize the difficulties for you and your family.

Thinking about changing jobs? Today’s difficult marketplace may not seem like the best timing. But 10 percent unemployment means that 90 of workers still have jobs. In good times or bad, why be stuck in the job you don’t like? Besides, as all the experts say: “The best time to look for a job is when you already have one.”
Here are some key questions to ask yourself when considering a job change.
- 1. What do I really want in my new job?
- You may earn a higher salary, but what about the other aspects of the job? Will you be challenged, fulfilled, happy? Take a personal inventory of your wants and needs before you start sending out resumes. Assess your strengths, the assignments you enjoy most, the things that make you want to come to work every day.
- 2. Can I make my current job my dream job?
- Now that you better understand your wants and needs, is there a way to change your current job to achieve them? Talk to your supervisor about your desires and aspirations. Sometimes it’s the “little things” that can make a difference. If salary is the issue, express your concerns in a frank, non-threatening way.
- 3. Am I working for the “right” company, but have the “wrong” job?
- Staying with the same employer has a number of advantages: you know the company, enjoy seniority, etc. Explore opportunities in other departments or divisions. Get involved in interdepartmental teams or task forces to establish contacts and widen your network. You may find your ideal job is just down the hall.
- 4. Do I have a strategy for finding a new job?
- If you decide to look outside your company, it’s important to do your homework, to learn what’s happening in your industry. Target companies that are growing or need your
- expertise. Read the trade journals, not just the job ads.
- 5. Are my skills up-to-date?
- If not, take a class or invest in training. Even if you don’t move to a new job, you’ll be more effective in the one you already have.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Joel Garfinkle
I was laid off in December 2008 along with 500 others throughout the company. At the same time I found out I was pregnant and although I looked for a job it had to be the right one for me to pursue at that time. I have now re-engaged in my job hunt and was offered a managerial position for approximately 30k less in base salary. I was a Director in my last position making $104k plus bonus for a total compensation $145k. My question is would you take the step backward with less pay? If so, how do you get ahead again – how does that look on your resume?
In this type of economy, it’s important to take the job you are offered. Unless you are in demand and have multiple opportunities, you should get employed as quickly as you can. Being employed helps your confidence, alleviates a lot of your stress, and helps you pay the bills. You will not be judged negatively for taking a lesser job in today’s recession. How do you get ahead once you’ve taken a job that pays less?
· Look for other opportunities within the company that are better suited for your talents and desired salary.
· Prove to your boss you are able to perform one or two levels above your current job.
· Ask your boss for more responsibility. Identify projects outside your current job that will have an impact and showcase your talents.
· Realize it’s easier to get another job when you have a job. You have confidence in yourself and you are applying your skill set which makes you more desirable for an employer.
When in a social setting, how exactly do I introduce myself and start talking about my lack of employment with someone in a position to help me without sounding inappropriate or pushy?
The best way is to make a connection with them that doesn’t involve work. Try to find a mutual interest, such as sports, local news or events, hobbies, or even common acquaintances or friends.
This can be challenging because you have a limited period of time and there can be lots of distractions at social events. That’s why I recommend you do your homework ahead of time. Find out who will be at the function and think about potential “ice breakers” to grease the conversation. Then, once you’ve established a connection, here are some tips to get to the heart of the matter: helping you find a job.
· Don’t say, “Hi, I’m Joel and I need a job.” This is not something you need to say right up front. You only scare them and give them a reason to escape to the appetizer table.
· Tell them briefly about your industry knowledge, experience or well-known companies or projects you’ve worked on. Establish your credibility early. Get them interested in you and your background.
· After you have captured their interest, talk about how you are between jobs and the type of position you are looking for.
· Inform them of the specific companies you want to work for and why you feel you would be a qualified fit. The person you are speaking with might know someone at the company and make an introduction for you.
Finally, before you wrap up the conversation, ask if you can call the person at a time that’s more convenient. That way, you’ll have their full attention, plus, it will give them some time to think of potential contacts or job opportunities. Don’t leave the event without getting their phone number or business card.
