~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CBS announced a three-year renewal for its long-running daytime drama, The Young and the Restless through the 2013-2014 season. To date this season, Y&R ranks as the #1 daytime drama in three categories: with total viewers at 5.15 million; among W18-49 with a 1.7 rating/11 share; and also with W25-54 at 2.3/14.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, current host of Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew in its fourth season on VH1, will have a new nightly show in primetime on HLN. The new program premiering in spring 2011 will feature Dr. Drew as he offers his professional opinions and perspectives on the stories and newsmakers the network covers during the day. Dr. Drew is a practicing physician and is board certified in internal and addiction medicine. He also hosts a radio show, Loveline that is nationally syndicated by Westwood One.

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be co-hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway on February 27. The actors follow last year’s co-hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. The 2011 event will be telecast live on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Discovery Channel is traveling to Alaska, or rather the skies over Alaska in the new 10-episode series Flying Wild Alaska (wt) opening January 5 at 9p. The series follows the family-owned airline, Era Alaska as the Tweto family transports needed items to people living in the most remote and extreme areas of the state. The series is produced by 3 Ball Productions for Discovery Channel.

Retirement Living TV (RLTV) premieres a new docu-series Sunset Daze following a group of seniors who act more like teenagers than old people. The series set in Sun City, AZ debuts December 8 at 8p.

Encore Channel renewed its half-hour news and interview show, In the House for a second season launching December 9. In the House is Encore Channel’s first original series featuring hosts Peter Bart and Peter Guber as they conduct intimate interviews with the entertainment industry’s top names. Previous guests have included Carey Mulligan, Mark Wahlberg, Quentin Tarantino, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and William T. Macy among many others. This second season of In the House is produced by RayV Productions in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment.

NATPE President/CEO Rick Feldman said the 2011 NATPE||Content First is almost at capacity with floor exhibitors and nearly 80% of suite space has been sold. Feldman said 500+ buyers from 43 countries are expected to attend the market held January 24-26 at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami. Some of the exhibitors include 20TH Century Fox Television Distribution, BBC Worldwide, CBS Television Distribution, FremantleMedia, Lionsgate, MGM and NBC Universal among many others.

E!’s series debut of Bridalplasty on Sunday at 9p attracted close to 900,000 total viewers and delivered a 0.56 rating among A18-49; a 0.90 rating with W18-49; and a 1.24 rating with W18-34. 

E! also said its series The Soup marks its 300th episode this Friday at 10p highlighted by a special guest appearance by Seth Green. The Soup airs each Friday.

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution has initially sold its new one-hour daily strip hosted by Anderson Cooper to stations in several big markets. Debuting in fall 2011, Anderson Cooper’s new show will air on WPIX/New York, KTTV/Los Angeles, WFLD/Chicago and WFXT/Boston. Based in New York City, the show is produced by Telepictures Productions in association with StrongChild Productions. Anderson Cooper additionally serves as an executive producer.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Eva Longoria, star of ABC’s Desperate Housewives has three projects in the works from her production company, UnbeliEVAble Entertainment:

  • In development at ABC is the hour-long drama Sendera via ABC Studios about two wealthy families, one from Mexico and one from Texas, who struggle to gain power. Fred Ellis, Monte Williams and Sally Robinson are on board to write. UnbeliEVAble Entertainment will produce with Kathryn Morris’ Hotplate Productions; Hotplate’s Alan Barnette and UnbeliEVAble’s Virginia Trinkle are co-executive producers.
  • Also for ABC is a single-camera comedy titled Parenting by Committee about four single best friends who find out one of them is pregnant and they decide to raise the child together minus the father. Alyssa Embree and Jessica Koosed are penning with Trinkle as co-executive producer. ABC Studios is producing.
  • Then for Starz, Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment is producing an eight-hour miniseries, Aztecs about the historic romance between Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes and his interpreter, Malinalli.

Casting Call: KPI, a New York-based production company is looking for individuals or families nationwide who are interested in learning how to sell their collectible items, vintage goods and/or antiques at flea markets for a new television series airing on a major cable network. Selected participants will be paired with the show’s expert “fleaman” to get their items appraised and then sold at their local flea market. The production company is seeking participants whose items have interesting back stories or those who are raising money for a specific cause or purpose. Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: ABC closed out November Sweep on Wednesday a winner for the night by posting a 2.3/8 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ Survivor: Nicaragua won by a smidge at 2.0/7 followed closely by ABC’s comedies The Middle and Better With You averaging a 2.0/6. ABC made a comeback during 9p with its sitcoms Modern Family and Cougar Town averaging a winning 3.0/10 with FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen next at 2.2/7. Then at 10p, ABC won the hour by a sliver with its Primetime Celebrity Plastic Surgery program at 1.8/6 while NBC’s The Biggest Loser: Where Are They Now? special was second at 1.7/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

John Ford joins ION Media Networks as President/Programming based at the company’s New York office. John, as part of the network’s senior management team, will supervise all facets of ION Television’s content efforts encompassing continued acquisitions, potential originals, scheduling and creative strategy and positioning. John will additionally work closely with Marc Zand who was promoted to EVP/Content Acquisitions and Digital Networks. Marc will manage the network’s TV series and movie pick-ups and negotiation activities. Marc reports to John Ford and also continues to head ION’s digital channels Qubo and ION Life.

FremantleMedia tapped Kim Ardal as Managing Director for Blu, the company’s production unit in Denmark. Kim will head all development and production operations for the Danish production unit, working in tandem with multiple divisions within FremantleMedia and reinforcing current relationships with broadcasters and other non-broadcast partners in the region. Based in Copenhagen, Kim will report to Daniela Matei, CEO Nordics, Central Eastern Europe and Balkans, FremantleMedia.

Bleacher Report, publisher of original sports-targeted editorial content, appointed Patrick Keane to its Board of Directors and further added two sales directors. Patrick previously was CEO at Associated Content. Brian Kelly will become West Coast Director of Sales joining from CBSSports.com and Ryan Gould was hired as East Coast Director of Sales coming from Burst Media.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. has employed Jason Charles, Mario Giampaolo and Joanna Kuebel as VPs/Sales and Marketing for the company’s Domestic Syndication unit.
