Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 30, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC delivered a solid win on Sunday night according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research, posting a convincing 7.3/17 A18-49 rating, well ahead of CBS 4.1/9, NBC 3.4/8, FOX 3.2/7 and WB 1.1/2.  At 7pm CBS with NFL Runover was in front for the hour with a 5.3/14, while ABC, NBC and Fox all tied with a 9 share. At 8pm, the tide changed and ABC leaped in front with EM: Home Edition’s 7.5/17. CBS and NBC were tied now, each posting a 9 share, and Fox dipping to an 8 share.  At 9p who gets killed Desperate Housewives pulls a huge 12.4/26 demo rating, more than three times over its closest competitor which earned an 8 share on CBS with the first hour of its 9-11p movie.  And at 10p, ABC held tough with Boston Legal’s 5.9/14, again well ahead of its closest competitors  CBS and NBC, both earning a 3.2/8 for the hour.

CBS has set the mid-season premiere of its new Ridley Scott/Tony Scott drama series, NUMB3RS starring Rob Morrow and David Krumholtz, for Friday, January 21 at 10pm.  The new Friday night schedule will be Joan of Arcadia, JAG and NUMB3RS.  The series is about an FBI agent (Morrow) who recruits his math genius brother to work for the bureau. The cast also includes Peter McNicol, Judd Hirsch, Sabrina Lloyd and Alimi Ballard.

Fox has announced the start date of its new midseason animated series American Dad to launch on February 6 behind the Super Bowl.  Fox has six eps of the series, and has ordered another 8 scripts.

Officials on site of the plane crash Sunday in Montrose, CO, believe they have now found the body of Teddy Ebersol, the 14 year old son of Dick Ebersol and Susan St. James.  In a statement provided by NBC yesterday afternoon, elder brother Charles Ebersol and his father are both expected to make a full recovery.

Casting / Development / Production

  • Candice Bergen has joined the cast of ABC’s Boston Legal as a regular, in the role of Shirley Schmidt, a partner in the lawfirm.
  • Fox has ordered a pilot of a project titled Peep Show, based on the British Channel 4 series, and developed for a US audience by Carsey Werner.
  • ABC Family has ordered a script of a comedy project called East of Normal, West of Weird (Brad Grey Television/Sony Pictures Television), about a young teenage Chinese girl adopted by mix-religion parents – one Protestant the other Jewish, and living in NYC.  Cast to play the daughter is Nikki SooHoo.
  • Pamela Anderson is reportedly teaming up with Steven Levitan to develop a sitcom with 20th, where Levitan has a development deal.  Per Variety, the project is about Anderson’s character making a few changes in her lifestyle choices as it concerns men.

Univision Communications has dropped its lawsuit against Nielsen Media Research regarding the Local People Meters measurement system.  The company had filed the complaint in June in a move to halt the system’s July rollout in several cities amidst allegations of potentially undercounting Spanish-language TV channels’ viewership.  In turn, Nielsen has dropped its counter suit.  Brooke Morganstein, Univision’s spokeswoman, stated that “while the lawsuit was dropped, we are continuing discussions.”  LPMs are currently in use in Boston, NY, LA, and Chicago. DMAs soon to launch the service include Washington, Philadelphia and Dallas.

Under the guidance of new EVP/GM Jane Root, the Discovery Channel announced a handful of projects for 2005, among them one called Greatest American.   I’ll give you a heads up on this own now, as you’ll need time to consider. Based on a series that first aired on the BBC, the Discovery Channel will ask viewers to nominate the one person in US history, living or dead, whose contribution was such that they deserve the title of Greatest American. Think politician, author, sportsman/woman, civil rights activist, teacher, inventor, whomever – only caveat is he/she must be American.  Come January, Americans will be asked to lodge their nominations. In May, Discovery will present the first of four specials, announcing the top 100 nominees.  Thereafter, the specials will highlight the top ten, providing biographies. You will be asked to vote again for your #1 pick. As you consider whom you’d nominate, you’ll find discussions spring up all over as others suggest their choices.  Expect this to be a very interesting exercise indeed.

The Science Channel and science guy Bill Nye will launch a new eight-part primetime series, The Science Channel’s 100 Greatest Discoveries, Wednesday December 8, 8-9p.  The series will explore scientific revelations such as Newton and the apple, Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, and other science biggies (a technical term) in all areas of science in which the discoveries have significantly changed the world.  The list of the 100 Greatest Discoveries was developed in consultation with the National Science Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and editors of its journal, Science.

Casting CallLion Television is looking for 12 amazing people with little or no gambling experience to go on a once in a lifetime trip to Las Vegas, all expenses paid. Interested?  Email

It just brightens my day to tell you the Yule Log will once again be featured on WPIX/NY this year, airing on Christmas morning from 8am to noon.  Commercial free.

John Drew Barrymore has died at the age of 72.  Drew Barrymore released a statement that characterized her father as a ‘cool cat’ and asked that you ‘please smile when you think of him.’  He was the son of legendary actor John Barrymore, but was more an enigma to filmgoers as well as his family, than an active participant.  His film career began at the age of 17, and most noted films include The Big Night in 1951 and The City Sleeps in 1956.  He leaves a legacy of alcohol and drug abuse, and more questions than answers.
Jordan Harris has been named Director/Sales & Marketing for the Syndicated Network Television Association (SNTA). Mitch Burg, President/SNTA, made the announcement. Jordan joins SNTA from MediaCom where he had been SVP/Group Director.

Channel One News has added Barbara Bekkedahl as SVP/Sales & Marketing for Primedia. The announcement was made by Kent Haehl, Channel One News’ President/Advertising Sales & Marketing, to whom she reports. Channel One News is the highest-rated daily teen television program in United States and is broadcast via satellite to nearly 12,000 secondary schools across the country.

Bob Winding has been named GM and VP/Sales for Better Life Media’s On Demand hotel division. Better Life on Demand is the first division formed under Better Life Media Inc., a multi media company founded in 2003 by Chairman Pat Hopf and Mr. Worre, whose objective is to provide a variety of tools, ideas and advice to consumers, enabling them to improve their personal and professional lives.

Jayson Dinsmore has been upped to VP/ Alternative Programs, NBC Entertainment. The announcement came from Craig Plestis, SVP/Alternative
Programs, to whom he will report.  Jayson will oversee the development of alternative series and specials.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1954:  An 8 1/2-pound meteorite crashes through the roof of a house in Sylacauga, Alabama, smashes into various pieces of furniture, and slams into Mrs. Elizabeth Hodges, who was taking a nap on a couch at the time.  Mrs. Hodges, the victim of the first modern instance of human-meteoric contact, suffered only a nasty bruise.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   I began my career with the NYPD, training with the 12th Precinct, and more precisely Sgt Gilhooley. From there, I moved to my current location with my wife. My wife prefers I smoke a pipe, but I can’t see it.  My favorite meal is at Barney’s Beanery where I can get chili and a creme soda. I like to play pool, golf and watch football. I can’t swim.  Who am I? LT. COLUMBO.  Kudos to:  Paul Gluck-WHYY/Philadelphia; Marie LaFevre-Telamerica/NY; Lisa Perkins-Mediaedge:CIA/Atlanta; Dave Hosford-Nail Adv/NY; Mark Meadors-Benefit Advisors/Little Rock; Al Kuenn-MediaChoice/Phoenix; Eddie Land-Pacific Television Center/LA; Stan Justice-Litton Ent & News Services/Hermosa Beach; Joe Feldman-Effective Media Services/LA; Wendy Tateishi-PHD/LA.

Today’s Trivia Question:   During a point in the series MASH, a regular character played by Spring Byington joined the cast, even though you never saw her.  What role did she play?  (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer.  Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
