Good morning – it’s Tuesday, November 2, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! Beauty is the Beast

We’ve seen it, we’ve experienced it and we all, on some level, understand it.  Going for a sales job and the person who gets the position, just happens to be the best looking person there.

We understand it because we know that beauty can get you into doors that were previously unavailable.  That client just might change his mind and take a meeting with the new sales rep, if she’s gorgeous.  Those of us who aren’t gorgeous, have seen beauty play an important role in social functions since junior high.  And it’s still happening, sort of.

I recently had a very interesting conversation with a man who is an executive at a very distinguished and famous company.  Sales people are looking to connect with him all the time.  This man can literally make your year if he buys from you.  So I asked him how much beauty helps in a sales position.  He told me it doesn’t, at all.  I explained that I wasn’t wearing a wire and he could speak his mind.  He said he had.   I asked him to explain.

“When a beautiful woman comes up to me asking for an appointment, I immediately say no.  I have nothing against beautiful women, I married one.  But hiring a beautiful person is often a stunt hire.  They were hired to get them into the door.  That’s not the person I want to talk to.  I want a person who knows their and my business thoroughly.  The person that, when I ask a complicated and layered question, they give me an intelligent answer.  I’m not saying beautiful people are incapable of that, but I know from experience, that the average looking person, who wasn’t hired for their looks, was hired because they were smart and good at what they do.  The beauty hire may have been hired for the same reason, or may have been hired for their beauty.  The point being, I don’t have the time to find out.”

Wow.  Is it possible that I actually feel bad for these genetic freaks with the high cheek bones or chiseled jawlines?  No, it was just a moment of weakness.  But my friend made an interesting point.  We know why the dumpy fellow was hired, but was the beauty hired for the same reason or for her beauty?

So I asked, “Is it the same with ex professional athletes?”

He continued, “If I owned a company with a sales force and if the sale can be completed on the first visit, I would look for attractive sales people or an ex professional athlete because looks and notoriety can get you through the door.  But the big sales that take time, I don’t want my sales person to be mistaken for a stunt hire.  I want my client to know I take their business seriously, I won’t send them a gimmick.”

Obviously there are beautiful people and ex professional athletes that are very capable of doing any job.  And I believe that this type of thinking, can lead to a very slippery slope.  And as much as the better part of me doesn’t want to admit this, I understand exactly what he is saying.

CSI: Don’t Answer the Phone

Did you ever wonder why after all of the horror films ever made, does the damsel in distress still pick up the phone to discover the killer is in the house. Every time I watch CSI, with the rare exception of a “Plushies” episode, there seems to be a takeoff of some horror scene I’ve seen in a movie. And you wonder, why does the woman go to the outskirts of Vegas when she knows there’s a murderer in the outskirts of Vegas?

That’s kind of how I feel when I go to networking events and watch entertainment industry professionals who are looking for work. Do you make these 5 key mistakes when you’re networking?

  • A babysitter in a nightgown answering a phone when the killer is in the house, is the equivalent of you asking someone you just met for work. It’s a big no-no. They don’t know you well enough to trust you. Instead, build the relationship and discuss your work so they are interested in maintaining a relationship with you, and should they need someone at that moment, they may offer it to you. If you say, “I’m available” after a great conversation, you just put up a 15 foot wall between the two of you.
  • Teenagers making out in a car in the woods where a known killer is on the loose, is the equivalent of you being pushy with a speaker after a Q&A. It makes me cringe when I watch someone push their script or reel on someone who is clearly saying they can’t accept it. DO NOT CORNER THE SPEAKER! Instead, ask him/her a relevant question based on the panel or screening, and then follow up with a note reminding him/her that you were the person who asked (insert your question).
  • The young sexy girl, who sits in a room where she was told to wait by her boyfriend, who is clearly being tortured to death in the next room, is the equivalent of you going to a networking event and not meeting people. I’ve seen you walking around, looking for people you know, seeing someone you’d like to speak to, but second guessing yourself and going back to a seat by yourself. Instead, commit to a number of people you WILL introduce yourself to, and push yourself out of your comfort zone to do it.
  • The young skinny-dippers in the haunted camp lake; they are as about as doomed as you are, if you get hammered at a networking event and make a big fool of yourself. This may work for A-List celebrities, but it is a no-no for you. Social drinking is one thing, getting inebriated to overcome your nerves and then doing things that are out of character for you is a bad choice. Instead, have objectives for the networking event or party, be professional and use my tools to calm your nerves instead of the bar.
  • The woman who waves down the truck, blaring creepy banjo music, because her car broke down, is the equivalent of you trying to network with the wrong people. It is a waste of your time to go blindly into a networking situation and just “hope” to meet the right people. Instead, research the speakers, guests, or panelists if possible. If not, have a specific classification of people you want to meet. For example, plan to meet 2 directors and 3 producers. This way, if you get stuck talking to a Hollywood real estate agent (insert creepy banjo music here), you can politely excuse yourself knowing you have not yet met the people you came to meet.

Networking events don’t have to be horrific. Be prepared and the nerves will dissipate.

Should you incorporate your cover letter in your email- or attached a separate cover letter?

I work primarily with freelancers, producers, directors, editors, actors, production designers, etc. When a freelancer is emailing a resume, the resume is attached and the cover letter is in the body of the email to entice the person reading it, to open the resume. When I worked for a production company, people submitting to us did the same thing. The executives I have coached put the cover letter in the body of the email as well as attach the cover letter in case an assistant is printing them out for a boss.

Do companies really care who is in your LinkedIn network? I’ve read that you should be particular about who you chose but does it really matter?

My personal opinion about LinkedIn is that it’s social networking. You never know who is going to be able to connect you with someone, so it’s in your best interest to “link” with as many people as you can. It’s usefulness and functions are growing to stay competitive. This is a tool for you. As long as you can stand by your reasons for using LinkedIn and your personal views on who you link with, than you have no control over how a person at a company is going to judge you. Two weeks ago I didn’t even care about LinkedIn for my business. Then I took a seminar about it, learned some added value, and felt it was worth completing my profile and adding to my tool belt. If anyone asked me my opinion on it this week they’d get a different answer than they would have a month ago. The bottom line is, I stand behind my choice, and I can speak about it with confidence.

Montreal-based Apartment 11 Productions hired Alberta Nokes as Head/Development, effective immediately. Alberta will identify existing development projects and emerging new properties in the children’s and adult factual programming categories.

Sesame Workshop elevated Anita Stewart to SVP/Corporate Partnerships where she will be in charge of developing and obtaining corporate partnerships and sponsorships for the non-profit educational organization’s children’s series Sesame Street and The Electric Company in the US in addition to co-productions around the world including in Brazil, China, South Africa, Mexico, Nigeria and India. Anita also heads the corporate funding for domestic and international community outreach partnerships. She reports to Myung Kang-Huneke, Chief of Staff.

Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Geographic Society, announced his retirement at the end of this year. Gilbert has served in this role for 23 years. John M. Fahey, President/CEO was appointed Chairman/CEO and Timothy T. Kelly, President/CEO of the Global Media Group will move into the position of President of the National Geographic Society. Both of these appointments become effective January 1, 2011. Gilbert will become Chairman Emeritus and will also be Chairman of the National Geographic Education Foundation.

Luminosity Marketing elevated Lamont Swittenberg as Managing Director to supervise all client work and daily operations. Lamont will additionally oversee as Marketing/Business Development for the company on an interim basis. The boutique media and marketing communications research company also promoted Jill Dehnert to Marketing Coordinator.

Manhattan-based creative advertising firm, MAUDE hired eight new staffers and promoted one as the company experiences recent growth:

  • Damion Waters advances to Senior Interactive Designer and Digital Creative Team Leader up from Interactive Designer.
  • Chris Knight joins as Associate Creative Director in charge of developing interactive, broadcast and non-traditional campaigns for the company’s clients. Chris will also work on behalf of MAUDE’s sister agency, Media Storm LLC in the areas of creative media executions, strategy and client presentations. Chris reports directly to Marc Klatzko, Managing Director, Creative and Marketing. Most recently, Chris was a freelance copywriter.
  • James Kloiber becomes Interactive Designer, reporting to Damion Waters. James joins from FOX Interactive Media.
  • Anna Hecker was hired as a Copywriter, reporting to Chris Knight. She joins from Night Agency where she served as Creative Strategist.
  • Puneet Sabharwal takes on the role as Art Director, reporting to Marc Klatzko. Puneet previously worked as Creative Director at TBWA/India.
  • Margaret Muhlfelder will become Account Director, joining from McCann Erickson. Margaret reports to Marc Klatzko.
  • Luree Lee is a new Designer at the agency, reporting to Puneet Sabharwal.
  • Kathrin Ayer becomes a Developer, reporting to Damion Waters.
  • Jenny Friedman was named Account Coordinator, reporting to Margaret Muhlfelder.

Saban Brands LLC hired Mary Rafferty as VP/Toys & Hard Lines and Rob Hughes as Marketing Director. Mary will manage toy licensing, product development and retail for properties represented by Saban Brands including Paul Frank and the new Power Rangers series premiering in 2011. Rob will oversee marketing campaigns for the company targeting Power Rangers and Paul Frank in addition to other future acquired properties.

Effective immediately, Jeff Gurley was promoted to VP/Director of Sales at KDFW FOX 4 and KDFI My27 in Dallas-Fort Worth. Jeff, who was most recently VP/GSM at the stations, will now manage the station’s entire sales efforts. He will report to Kathy Saunders, VP/GM.

Bob Winter was named CCO for the Chicago office at WPP’s Young & Rubicam, reporting to Tony Granger, Global CCO. Bob will begin his new position in December and once at the agency will head creative direction on behalf of clients such as Sears, DieHard, Craftsman, Hotels.com, Giant Eagle and Kenmore. Bob joins from Leo Burnett Chicago where he was SVP/Executive Creative Director for more than three years.

Atlas Media Corp. elevated Andrew Jacobs to Director/Development. Andrew’s new role is effective immediately and he will continue to be located at Atlas Media’s New York headquarters. He reports directly to Kaki Kirby, EVP/Business Development and Special Projects.

Telemundo tapped Michael Alvarez as VP/Advertising Sales for the Telemundo Network Sales New York. Michael will co-manage advertising and sponsorship functions for Telemundo Network’s assets in the New York region as well as supervise a team of Account Managers. Michael will report to Michael Rodriguez, SVP/Network Ad Sales, Telemundo.

This month, Landmark Theatres and Arthouse Marketing Group launched a new company to concentrate on cinema advertising sales called Spotlight Cinema Networks based in Santa Monica, CA. The new entity represents more than 400 cinema screens in top markets in the US. Michael Sakin will take on the role of EVP at Spotlight Cinema Networks in charge of sales, marketing and industry relations. Michael was formerly SVP/Sales at Landmark. Furthermore, Jerry Rakfeldt, Managing Director at AMG will become President of Spotlight Cinema Networks.

CNN en Espanol added three experienced Spanish-language news anchors to its on-air anchor team:

  • Fernando del Rincon will be located at CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta and will anchor the new program CNN Investiga in addition to co-hosting Panorama Mundial with Senior Anchor Patricia Janiot. Previously, Fernando was an anchor at Univision, Telemundo and Mega TV.
  • Camilo Egana will additionally move to Atlanta to lead the weekend newscast Mirador Mundial and the new program Archivo CNN. He was most recently a news anchor at Mega TV.
  • Mercedes Soler was tapped to co-host NotiMujer, a new program aimed at women along with co-host Glenda Umana. Prior to this, Mercedes was a columnist for el Nuevo Herald, a journalism professor and a news anchor/correspondent for Univision.

Iambic Media, a UK-based independent production company established two new divisions: Iambic Entertainment and Iambic Scotland. Both divisions will develop new entertainment and factual programming. Iain Thompson was named Creative Director to lead Iambic Entertainment in London. Iambic Scotland will continue the company’s focus on the arts and cultural content, particularly in Scotland and will be supervised by Andy Picheta, Executive Producer and Rebecca Ferrand, Producer, both of whom were former owners of Muckrach Media that was recently acquired by Iambic Media.

Robert W. Sprague was elevated to President/CEO, effective immediately, at PCI Communications. Previously, Robert was SVP/CSO with the company and he follows the late Sam Del Brocco in the President/CEO position. Robert is also one of the co-founders of PCI Communications which specializes in marketing, public relations, crisis communications, training, graphic design, market research, web interactive, video and event productions and more with offices in Washington, D.C. and New York.

Sarah Trahern moves up to GM/SVP at Great American Country (GAC), effective immediately. Sarah, who has been with the network since 2005, will report to Ed Hardy, GAC President. Sarah’s scope of oversight increases to include strategic planning and more daily management of all departments at the network.

Universal Music Group (UMG) upped Rob Wells to the new position of President/Global Digital Business, reporting to Zach Horowitz, President/COO and Max Hole, COO, Universal Music Group International (UMGI). Rob will work in tandem with multiple units of UMG and its business partners to grow the company’s digital strategy and reach across current and emerging platform. Rob is based at UMG’s headquarters in Santa Monica.
