CYNTHIA TURNER’S CYNOPSIS
11/02/04
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 2, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Sunday night numbers find ABC once again in front with an overall 5.9/15 A18-49 rating according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS was a nearby #2 with a 4.2/11 based in part of the strength of the NFL Runover which dug into approx 30 minutes of primetime on CBS (7.0/21). At 7pm after CBS was ABC with AFV’s 2.8/6. Things change starting at 8pm with ABC now in front with Extreme Makeover Home Edition (6.2/16) charging ahead of CBS’ mix of 60 Minutes runover and Cold Case (4.8/12 8-9pm). At 9pm Desperate Housewives owned the hour with a 9.8/23. The closest competition came from NBC with a 3.7/9 for L&O: CI. The Mountain on the WB made its time period debut at 9pm and while its highest demo for the hour was among W12-17 (1.5/6), in nearly every other demo it dropped 2-4 share points off the Charmed lead-in. At 10p ABC’s Boston Legal won the hour with a 4.8/13, narrowly leading NBC’s Crossing Jordan by a single share point.
It may – or may not – come as a surprise that NBC has decided to benchFather of the Pride for the November sweep. The 30m on Tuesdays at 9p will be filled by The Biggest Loser, expanded by 30m weekly to air from 8-930p.
NBC Universal’s syndicated series Home Delivery has also been benched, perNew York Post. NBCU will continue to provide new episodes for the November and February sweeps, with repeats and repackaged eps airing for the rest of the commitment.
Newton Media purchased four 30m infomercial time periods on Orlando station WKMG over the past weekend, and in the time period aired the anti-John Kerry film Stolen Honor. The film aired at 1P and 730P on Saturday, and at 2a and 11a on Sunday morning. Henry Maldonado, GM for hte Post-Newsweek station said, “It wasn’t our intent to offend people … We did the right thing. Advertisers have the right to be treated fairly when they want to buy commercial time on a television station.” Other stations in the market had been approached with the same deal, and declined to air the film.
Casting / Development / Production:
Tim Hobert, Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) and stand up comic Brian Regan are developing a comedy project for NBC based in large part on Brian Regan. NBC has ordered a script. The project is set at NBC Universal TV.
Never one to shirk from a good in-your-face drama story, producer Steven Bochco may rankle some feathers with his drama project set in Iraq, focused on the troops based there, their daily conflicts and grind, and the families they each have back home. FX has ordered a pilot, titled Over There (produced by 20th), written by Chris Gerolmo, who will also direct. Production begins in January.
Comedy Central has signed Norm McDonald to develop and star in a sketch comedy project; CC has ordered a pilot, per Variety. The project is being developed by both McDonald and Lori Jo Hoekstra.
GSN (fka Game Show Network) has ordered up a second season of World Series of Blackjack, in concert with the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Season #2 debuts on January 11 at 10p, featuring 40 amateur and professional card players with a half million in total prize money.
Casting Call – this one is a little different. Lion TV has an upcoming primetime documentary special on Bridesmaid called Always a Bridesmaid. They are looking for someone in the tri-state area who is going to be a bridesmaid sometime between now and November 20th, and is willing to have cameras follow her as she does all of her girly bridal wedding-prep stuff. If you fit into this criteria and are willing to play along (might want to check with the bride first), contact Rachel at
with your contact and wedding information.
Joanne Modlin has been named VP/Research for Twentieth Television, reporting to Joanne Burns, Twentieth Television’s SVP/Marketing, Research and New Media. In her new position Joanne will assist in overseeing the day-to-day activities of Twentieth Television’s distribution, cable and network research activities. Joanne is based in LA.
Roy Restivo has been named VP/Research, NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution where he will oversee the distributor’s national and local market sales research for the West Coast. Based in LA, Roy will report to Jeff Dellin, SVP/Research in NY.
Thomas Vitale has been upped to SVP/Programming and Original Movies for the SCI FI Channel, reporting to Dave Howe, GM. Adding to his responsiblities are original genre movie development and production, while continuing to oversee the network’s aggressive buying and scheduling efforts. Well done, Tom!
Lloyd Braun has a new gig – top liner of Yahoo! Media and Entertainment group. The offocial announcement is expected today. Braun, formerly Chairman of ABC Ent. Television Group, will oversee Yahoo’s content including movies, TV, news sports and the kid-targeted websites. He’ll report to Dan Rosensweig, COO.
