Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 29, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With a lineup of branded channels ready for launch, the Pac-12 has hired Lydia Murphy-Stephans to serve as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Pac-12 Networks. In the position, Murphy-Stephans will oversee the development, launch and management of the Pac-12 Networks where she will hire and manage the programming and production team for creating studio shows and other original programming. She brings more than 25 years of experience in network television to the conference, and joins the conference after serving as founder and partner of All Access Media Partners. On the Air
Sunday Night Football scored as the top broadcast in primetime Sunday night, according to overnight numbers from Nielsen. The NBC game delivered a 12.5 overnight rating and a 19 share to the network, which is off 4% from last year’s Week 12 game that featured the Colts hosting the Chargers. Top markets included Pittsburgh with a 50.7/6, followed by Kansas City, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Baltimore. CBS’ late afternoon game, led by New England/Philadelphia, drew a 15.6 in the overnights, off 1% from last year’s coverage. Fox’s single-game NFL coverage, bolstered by Chicago/Oakland, was up 8% over 2010.
NBC’s broadcast of the NHL Thanksgiving Showdown on Friday pitting the Red Wings against the Bruins scored a 1.0 in the overnight ratings. The game marks the earliest timeframe that the channel has run the sport. That rating is on par with the network’s typical coverage of the sport in the winter and spring.
The final Week 14 NFL schedule is locked in, with the announcement that NBC’s SNF matchup would remain the originally scheduled Giants/Cowboys game. Meanwhile, the Raiders/Packers game will now move from 1p to 4:15p on CBS.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are now accusing FOX Sports of trying to dodge competition in the broadcaster’s pursuit of team television rights, according to the AP. Although Fox is citing that the company has an exclusive negotiating period with the team, the Dodgers said in papers filed to the Delaware Bankruptcy Court that the company’s complaints “have no merit and are designed to prevent the debtors from engaging in any effort to expose the debtors’ telecast rights to the marketplace to the extent an agreement is not reached with Fox.” FOX states that team owner Frank McCourt is trying use the club’s bankruptcy in order to break the team’s current TV deal.
With the press conference on BTN yesterday, Urban Meyer has officially taken off his microphone and pulled out the clipboard. Meyer accepted the job as the next football coach of Ohio St. with a deal worth a reported $40 million over seven years, thereby ending his run as an analyst for ESPN.
NBA players who filed an antitrust lawsuit against the league are now asking a Minnesota judge to pause on court proceedings while the two sides work on finishing the new CBA. Owners stipulated that in order for the deal to be approved, the lawsuits must be dropped. As a result, players submitted a letter to the judge stating that a tentative agreement had been reached to resolve their labor dispute. The players asked the judge to stay all of the scheduled court proceedings until Dec. 9.
Universal Sports Network unveiled its broadcast schedule for the upcoming European World Cup Bobsled and Skeleton series, with eight stops in five different countries for the events. The tour begins Dec. 9-11 in Igls, Austria. The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) will produce three one-hour segments for each weekend of World Cup racing in Europe with Universal Sports broadcasting the coverage on a one-week delay. Programs will run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 6p.
ESPN is taking hits from media pundits for its Sunday broadcast of a taped conversation between the wife of now-fired Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine and one of his alleged victims. The criticism stems from allegations that the network didn’t broadcast the tape of the 2002 conversation until now. The network notes that they had only received the tape in 2008, according to Reuters, and were unable to verify the voices on the tape or corroborate the charges of molestation until now. Syracuse fired Fine on Sunday after ESPN aired the tape during a broadcast of Outside the Lines.
The U.S. Tennis Association has named Sue Hunt as USTA’s Chief Marketing Officer. Hunt originally joined the USTA in 2006 as Senior Director, Marketing, and was promoted to Managing Director, Marketing in 2009. In addition to overseeing all marketing, advertising and promotional activities for the organization, she will now oversees the USTA Membership Department as well.

The sponsorship also designates Visa as the official payment card of the NHLPA and NHL in Canada. The sponsorship also gives Visa the opportunity to develop programs for Canadian hockey fans across the country.
Scotiabank, the official bank of the NHL, will now serve as the title sponsor of NHL Fan Fair, the league’s fan festival that takes place during the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend from Jan. 26-28. As part of the deal, the 2012 Scotiabank NHL Fan Fair will offer three days of family-friendly interactive games and attractions, special appearances, trophy and memorabilia displays, live TV and radio broadcasts, music, food and dozens of other dynamic activities.
While we are on hockey, Rangers players Henrik Lundqvist, Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky and Dan Girardi unveiled the official team jersey for the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic yesterday. The game will take place against the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 2 at 1p. The jersey unveiling was hosted by MSG Network’s Dave Maloney and Al Trautwig was streamed live on Blueshirtsunited.com and Facebook.com/nyrangers. The Big South Conference announced that they had purchased Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM AVCHD camcorders this past fall for the league’s 700+ sporting events across 11 colleges and universities in order to shoot content for the conference’s live streaming and web archive. The Big South requires that its 11 member institutions use the camcorders to shoot the majority of their home sporting events – ranging from football to men’s and women’s basketball to soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball – which would then be streamed via the conference site. The conference reports that the goal of the camera upgrade was to create a uniform video production platform.
