Cynopsis: Kids!

11/28/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November  28, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Discovery Kids Channel will premiere part one of A Year On Earth this Sunday December 3, 5-6:30p, with part 2 debuting the following week on Sunday, December 10, 5-6p.  The special program follows three high schoolers who have taken a year off from school to travel around the world to explore the planet and report back what they find.  While on their trip the teens blogged about their experiences, and a music video supporting the special has been posted on YouTube.

Jetix Europe has acquired the multiple rights to the CGI animated series Urban Vermin (26 x 30′), from Decode Entertainment.  Under the deal, Jetix Europe picks up the TV rights to Urban Vermin across Europe, with the exception on free TV rights in France.  Additionally, Jetix Europe will serve as the home video and merchandising and licensing agent for the series in Europe.  DHX Media, Decode’s parent company, plans to produce digital online content, which will be used to support the TV launch of the series in Europe.  Commissioned by Canada’s YTV, Urban Vermin is currently in production.

Nickelodeon focuses on how kids/tweens/teens can protect themselves online and be smart when visiting social networking websites when it airs, a new episode of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, Online and In Danger? How to Protect Yourself in the Virtual World, Sunday, December 10, 8:30p.

Viacom’s MTV Tr3s and Bela Broadcasting inked an affiliation agreement that will bring two more of the top ten US Hispanic markets into the network’s distribution plan.  The new full power broadcast stations in the LA and Phoenix markets will give the US Latino youth-focused network an additional 15% national Hispanic market coverage.  With the affiliation of Bela Broadcasting’s KBEH-TV Channel 63 in LA and KMOH-TV and KEJR-LP in the Phoenix DMA, MTV Tr3s is now carried on 32 broadcast stations in 19 DMAs.

Asia Television Forum 2006 (ATF), the seventh annual, will open its doors for business tomorrow November 29-December 1, in Singapore, and will feature upward of 336 exhibitors.  The annual TV programming market draws TV content sellers from around the world to meet with Asian buyers and potential partners.  This year ATF focuses on new media efforts (e.g. HDTV, IPTV and Mobile TV), though it also continues to feature TV platforms including, cable/satellite/free-to-air broadcasters, distributors and production studios.  In attendance this year will be, for the first time, Korea’s four main broadcasters: Educational Broadcasting System (EBS); Korea Broadcasting System (KBS); Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC); and Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS).  ATF is held in conjunction with the 2006 Asia Film Market & Conference, Asia Animation and Asia Media Festival.

STONE SOUP

Scholastic News has added 57 new members to its Kids Press Corps.  A diverse group from across the country, Scholastic’s new student reporters (all 10-14 yrs-old) round out the full group of 80 kids, all of whom cover current events, breaking news, entertainment and sports events from their hometowns.  Their articles will be published at www.scholastic.com/news; in Scholastic News, the in-classroom magazine for kids in grades 1-6; and in Junior Scholastic, which is for kids in grades 6-8.  To be selected for the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, kids were asked to submit a writing sample and described their interest in journalism.
