It’s official: Katie Couric cut short her ABC News stint as special correspondent, part of the deal for her syndicated talk show, Katie, to become Yahoo‘s global anchor in early 2014. “News is definitely a daily habit for our users,” said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, “and Katie will work with our talented editorial team to pioneer a new chapter of digital journalism.” Couric will continue to host her weekday talker.
On Sunday’s episode of Seth MacFarlane animated comedy Family Guy, a major character was killed off: Brian the dog. Exec producer Steve Callaghan told E! Online that the shocking event was intended to “shake things up” in the show’s twelfth season. The Sopranos‘ Tony Sirico will voice the role of the Griffin family’s new pooch, Vinny. A petition from outraged fans demanding Brian’s return was circulating by early Monday.
NBC News named Bill Neely its new Chief Global Correspondent. NBC News President Deborah Turness was formerly editor of ITV News, where Neely was International Editor for eleven years.
Turner Broadasting health and wellness brand Upwave is previewing the first episode of The Tim Ferriss Experiment on digital a week before its TV premiere on HLN. The show, demonstrating rapid-learning techniques and available online now at upwave.com/TFX, will debut on HLN Sunday, December 1 at 8p.
In the wake of Saturday’s fatal shooting in a Nashville bar, Spike TV yanked the Sunday 10p ep of Bar Rescue that was set where country singer Jerald Wayne Mills had been shot. But the net faced viewer outrage when it overlooked the midnight encore. “In our last minute effort over the weekend to pull the Bar rescue episode featuring the Pit and Barrel,” posted Spike on Facebook, “we regretfully did not remove a late-night telecast of the episode. We apologize to all those affected by the terrible tragedy.”

The new sound on Weather Channel “Local on the 8’s” segments (airs every 10 minutes on the 8s) comes courtesy of Man Made Music. “The music is designed to be customized by region and weather conditions and to be relevant to your experience each day,” said Man Made Music founder Joel Beckerman. “We wanted Local on the 8’s to be as enjoyable as it is informative.”
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the re-election of President and ECO, Bruce Paisner for a two-year term. Paisner, a senior advisor to Hearst Entertainment & Syndication, has held the Academy position since 2004.
Martin Sheen (The West Wing) is starring in 90-minute TV movie The Whale. Based on the maritime disaster said to have inspired Herman Melville classic Moby Dick, the film from BBC Factual Productions with Animal Planet premieres on BBC One in December and Animal Planet in the summer of 2014.
The Making of The Sound of Music Live!, airing on NBC Wednesday, November 27 at 8p, drums up excitement for the net’s big holiday event by going behind the scenes during preparations for the live TV musical. TLC documents the story of Mayra Rosales, famous for being one of the heaviest women alive, who was acquitted of murdering her nephew, as she loses weight and starts a new life. Half-Ton Killer: Transformed, from Meglaomedia, Inc., premieres Wednesday, December 4 at 9p.
Three-part series Mustang Millionaire tracks the progress of five horse trainers vying for a million-dollar prize to tame a wild mustang. The Sixty Six Media production kicks off on Nat Geo WILD Saturday, December 14 at 10p.
REELZ acquired 80 episodes of Marie, with an option for additional shows. The Marie Osmond talker, cancelled last summer by Hallmark Channel, premieres Monday, January 6 at 10a.
Another Day/Another Time: Celebrating the Music of “Inside Llewyn Davis” captures a one-night concert in NYC. Inspired by the upcoming Coen Brothers film about the Greenwich Village early 1960s folk scene, the documentary premieres on Showtime Friday, December 13 at 10p.
Stand-up comedy special Patton Oswalt: Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait and produced by Comedy Central, premieres on EPIX Friday, January 17 at 10p.
A&E picked up a third season of crime thriller Longmire, its number one original drama series of all time in total viewers, from Horizon Media. In its second go-round the show, starring Robert Taylor, averaged 3.7 million total viewers.
Close encounters with local monsters and ancient spirits are chronicled in Destination America‘s Monsters & Mysteries in America. Season two of the series from M2 Pictures travels cross-country to bring “brow-furrowing stories,” starting Sunday, December 15 at 10p.
BBC America is bringing back clone thriller Orphan Black for a sophomore season on Saturday, April 19 at 9p. The date was revealed during the encore broadcast of Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor.
Reality series Total Divas and Eric & Jessie: Game On got second season pickups from E!, as did weekly talker Hello Ross. Divas airs Sundays at 10, Eric & Jessie’s finale aired November 3, and Hello Ross ends its freshman run Friday, November 29 at 10p.
Investigation Discovery is bringing back crimes-of-passion documentary series Deadly Affairs, and host Susan Lucci is once again along for the ride. The Sirens Media production was one of ID’s top five shows during third quarter 2013.
ABC Family announced return dates for two series. Melissa & Joey‘s expanded third season continues Wednesday, January 15 at 8p, followed by new episodes of Baby Daddy at 8:30p.

English-language Latino net NUVOtv, entered into a deal with Mario Lopez (The X Factor), who will develop three new series for the net. NUVOtv also ordered a second season of Mario Lopez One-on-One, and greenlit Lopez’s Salsa in the City (wt). What’s with all the Lopez love? “Mario is a major talent who attracts a broad multicultural audience through his strong Latino point of view,” Bill Hilary, NUVOtv head of programming, tells Cynopsis. “We are extremely happy to be extending our partnership.”
AMC ordered two pilots, to be produced by AMC Studios in 2014 for possible series in 2015. Knifeman, set in 18th century London, tells the story of an arrogant, hard-drinking surgeon. Action/sci-fi Galyntine explores a post-apocalyptic world. The net will premiere dramas Turn and Halt and Catch Fire in 2014.
Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70s Show) has been cast in upcoming net El Rey‘s From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. Valderrama will play a crime lord in the FactoryMade Ventures drama, debuting in early 2014, the first scripted original series for the cable net.
Andrew J. West (Greek) has joined the cast of The Walking Dead, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The fourth season of the smash hit zombie drama airs on AMC Sundays at 9p.
Jack Davenport (Smash) will play an assistant U.S. attorney in The Good Wife, reports EW. The CBS drama airs Sundays at 9p.
And the 2014 Super Bowl winner is… Masterchef Canada, which scored CTV‘s prime post-game timeslot. It will be the third episode of the season for the Proper Television production.

A nail-biting overtime NFL game between Tom Brady’s Patriots and Peyton Manning’s Broncos scored a 17 rating and estimated 23.98 million viewers for NBC in fast nationals. It was the league’s top November primetime game since 1996.
Against tough Sunday competition from the NFL, ABC held its own, according to preliminary numbers. America’s Funniest Home Videos was up one tenth week to week to hit a season high 1.5/4 in A18-49, while the 2013 American Music Awards drew 12.9 million viewers and scored 4.5/11 in the demo to make it the top non-sports broadcast net from 8p-11p. The awards show hit four-year highs in viewers and young adults.
Univision reports Sunday night’s finale of dance competition Mira Quien Baila! attracted an average audience of 4.4 million total viewers 2+, two million in A18-49 and 834,000 in A18-34, making Univision the number four broadcast net in the young demos during the show’s two-hour finale.

Fox’s Bones tied Univision’s Corazon Indominable at 8p with 1.5/5. ABC took over at 9p with Shark Tank grabbing 1.8/6, versus 1.5/5 for CBS’s Hawaii Five-0. ABC eked out a 10p win with 1.6/5 for 20/20, followed by 1.5/5 for CBS’s Blue Bloods.

Broadcast vet Ray Schonbak died of cancer on November 20. He was 70. During a career that spanned fifty years, Schonbak formed Triad Communications and was COO of Emmis Communications, and served on the Fox Network Affiliate board of governors. Most recently he was the Vice President and General Manager of KSWB TV in San Diego.
