Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 26, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Major League Soccer and NBC Sports Group laid out plans for the 2014 season, with 41 regular-season games on deck across NBC and NBCSN. Next year will see NBC present three regular-season games, with 38 on NBCSN. The season kicks off March 8 on NBCSN with a matchup of 2013 MLS Playoff teams as the Seattle Sounders host Sporting Kansas City. The schedule also revealed that Major League Soccer will take a two-week break in June during the first round of the World Cup.

On the Air

A Manning/Brady matchup once again paid dividends as NBC’s Sunday Night Football OT thriller posted a 17.0 overnight rating and 28 share to rank as the best primetime overnight for a November game in 17 years. The game also drew a 26% spike over last season’s Week 12 SNF game. Top markets included Denver with a 48.2/71 along with Boston, Providence, Albuquerque and Indianapolis.

Speaking of SNF, NBC announced that it was flexing the Week 14 Panthers/Saints game on Sunday, Dec. 8 into primetime. The game will now be played at 8:30p on NBC, which the Falcons/Packers game shifting to FOX at 1p.

ESPN announced 23 finalists for its upcoming coverage of The Hope Depot College Football Awards, which will take place on Dec. 12 at 7p. ESPNU will feature the below nominees during The Home Depot College Football Awards Nomination Special on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5:30p. The 30-minute show, hosted by Anish Shroff, will include player interviews and analysis from college football analyst Charles Arbuckle surrounding the finalists. Texas A&M and Florida State lead schools in nominations having four and three players nominated, respectively. Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh), Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M), AJ McCarron (Alabama) and Jameis Winston (Florida State) are each finalists for two awards.
 
Sal Masekela will join NBC Olympics’ coverage as a sports desk reporter, where he will present features for The Olympic Zone, NBC Sports Group’s 30-minute daily show for NBC affiliates. Masekela joined NBC in 2012 and serves as a host and commentator for NBC’s Red Bull Signature Series.

Will Ferrell will reportedly become the latest celebrity to guest-host SportsCenter. The Big Lead reports that Ferrell, perhaps as alter ego Ron Burgundy, will host the 6p SportsCenter on Thursday, December 5th. His appearance would mark the third celebrity guest host in just over a month, joining Ken Jeong and Jimmie Johnson.

Speaking of Farrell, the actor will be in character to help cover Canada’s Olympic curling trials for TSN. Burgundy will team up with Vic Rauter, when the “Roar of the Rings” opens on Sunday.

HRTV announced Thanksgiving plans for Thursday. At 11a, HRTV opens coverage with live coverage of special holiday racing cards from Aqueduct, Churchill Downs, Hollywood Park, Laurel Park, Fair Grounds, Calder, and Golden Gate. The culminating event of HRTV’s equestrian block will begin at 10:30p with the premiere of the Maserati 109th U.S. Polo Championship, dubbed the “Super Bowl” of Polo.

The NBA named its Player Ambassadors for the league’s NBA Give BIG initiative and its first-ever social media photo mosaic to celebrate charitable efforts around the world with their fans during the holiday season. Ambassadors are set to include: Pau Gasol (Lakers), Metta World Peace (Knicks), Kevin Love (Timberwolves), Luol Deng (Bulls), as well as more from other teams.

The Financial Times inked a deal to become presenting sponsor of the inaugural World Tennis Day Showdown that will take place at London’s Earls Court. In addition, the company was named the official business publication of Showdown events in Bangkok, Hong Kong and New York City. The event will see Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Pat Cash and Ivan Lendl will be featured at London’s World Tennis Day Showdown on March 3.

MSG Networks announced that Haggar Clothing Co. will serve as the new presenting sponsor of the critically acclaimed MSG original programs The Game 365 and Halls of Fame. Haggar currently serves as the official designer of the Pro Football Hall of Fame gold jacket as well as the official navy blazer for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Digital & Technology

The Legacy Agency, Inc. announced a new strategic partnership with multi-platform video syndicator CineSport LLC. The partnership will provide CineSport access to TLA’s list of current and former athletes, coaches and broadcasters as assets for news and business partnerships. The non-exclusive partnership will include original programming, both taped commentary and breaking news as well as longer form interviews and sponsor-driven packages. It is the first time TLA has partnered with an outside platform for custom video distribution.

Tom Brady’s win over the Broncos delivered a record 21.3 million minutes of consumption through NBC Sports Live Extra. That marks the most for any NBC NFL regular-season game and the second-most minutes consumed among all NBC NFL games, trailing only the consumption of Super Bowl XLVI. The game delivered 60.5 minutes per visit, marking the best engagement for any NBC NFL game ever, including its live stream of Super Bowl XLVI.

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic announced a partnership with the Washington Times designed to increase the Times’ sports coverage and deliver Comcast SportsNet’s digital media content to additional platforms and audiences. The agreement will allow the Times to use Comcast SportsNet’s digital media content in its print and digital editions, as well as WashingtonTimes.com.
