Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
11.23.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, November 23, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Overqualified or a great bargain?
In this economy, with more people looking for fewer jobs, there are many more applicants who are considered overqualified. While many companies can pick up great employees at bargain prices, many interviewers are hesitant about hiring people who are overqualified. Here’s why:
- You’ll leave the moment another job becomes available.
- You’ll have difficulty being managed by someone who has less experience than you.
- Salary will be too low.
- You’ll be bored and become distracted, and perhaps even, distract others.
First you have to be honest with yourself and decide whether these concerns have merit. If not, you have to convince the interviewer that their fears, while understandable, are not applicable in this circumstance.
You want to be proactive and address the situation in your cover letter. Turn the question around into being a tremendous bargain for the company. Write about “hitting the ground running,” and about not being overqualified, but being fully qualified.
In an interview, you must discuss in greater detail why being overqualified isn’t a negative, but a huge positive.
- Be ready to respond to the legitimate fears of any interviewer when hiring someone overqualified.
- Discuss how money might not be as important as it once was.
- Describe how you want to start in a new field and learn new things while also bringing a tremendous amount of experience and business acumen.
- Let the interviewer know that this job is as important to you as it is to the company and that you are not looking for just a quick fix.
- Ask an interviewer what qualities the perfect candidate should have, and explain how you are that person.
Remember, if you don’t make a convincing argument about how you should be hired, the next person waiting to be interviewed will.

It is my firmly held (and often stated) belief that every communication is a presentation, and should be treated as such. Adopting this belief will give you a better than even chance of avoiding ‘foot-in-mouth’ disease!
When it comes to making a verbal presentation, whether that be a pitch, an interview, a seminar or a big, formal speech, or a casual networking conversation, one of the basic tools at our disposal is our voice, yet this vital part of our presentation armory is often ignored or treated with disdain.
Something like 40% of what people remember about you and your presentation is how you sound…so failing to use your voice as well as possible could prove to be your downfall.
Let’s take a look at some of the constituent parts of your voice:
- Resonance – this is about how much of your body you use when speaking. Generally more is better.
- Shaping tools – This is your mouth: lips; teeth; tongue.
- Breathe – You need to breathe in order to speak. I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but think about the number of people you know who constantly seem to be gasping for breath when they are talking.
- Grounding – this is about giving your voice a good platform from which to work. You won’t get the best out of your home cinema speakers if you put them on a flimsy table, and you won’t get the best from your voice without giving it something solid to stand on.
This isn’t the forum to try to teach you more about your voice, but I hope it will get you thinking about it a little, and maybe start to look at ways to learn more. Yoga, singing and certain martial arts are all great for learning more about ways to improve your breathing, and of course singing is a great way to learn more about shaping, resonance and projection, so if you are keen to make the most out of your presentations these might be places to start.

I work as the lead executive assistant (I manage a staff of seven) and my contract is not through the company, but just with my boss. My boss recently hired an old friend who is creating a major disturbance from within. He has my bosses’ ear but not the experience to make the right decisions. Plus he has threatened people, sabotaged others work and has even fired people he has no right to fire. I’ve tried talking to my boss, but he is loyal to his friend. I have invested too much into this job to see it destroyed by an inexperienced friend who is a maniac. What do I do?
I wish I could give you a simple, ‘one-stop’ solution to this problem, but it’s way too complex for that. Factors such as the nature of your contract with your boss; your job description; the employment status of the people in your team; your relationship with your boss; etc.etc.
I suspect that, from the tone of your question, the requirement is for a difficult and challenging conversation with your boss. I have a strategy for just such a conversation, but sadly it will need much more time and space than I have here to outline it for you even in the broadest terms, so I suggest you invest in Susan Scott’s book ‘Fierce Conversations’, which will help you to work out how best to deal with a very difficult and taxing problem. Good luck!
Do companies pre-determine the amount of time an ad for a job stays up? Or do they wait until a certain amount of people have responded? Is there any thought about when to get in a cover letter and resume other than ASAP?
In my experience, ads are inserted firstly on a ‘How Many for How Much’ basis, along with a basic grasp on the part of the HR department of how many decent applicants they are likely to have respond. Advertising media offer good rates for series insertions of ads, so typically a single ad might be charged at $500, three insertions at $1,200, six at $2,000 and so on. If the role being advertised is a specialized one, more insertions are likely to be needed, while a general admin post may only need one ad to generate many good applications. As far as timing is concerned: get your application in as possible. No-one will think less of you for being keen.
