Syfy introduces new original series and fresh seasons of established series in first quarter 2011:

  • Being Human – New original series about a vampire, a ghost and a werewolf who share their secrets while living together in a brownstone in Boston. Muse Entertainment produces the 13-episode one-hour series premiering January 17 at 9p.
  • Face Off – New competitive/elimination series featuring special-effects make-up artists as they compete to see which one can create the most amazing works of living art. Mission Control Media produces the series premiering January 26 at 10p.
  • Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen – Molecular gastronomist Marcel Vigneron (season two runner-up on Bravo’s Top Chef), is hired by a demanding client each episode to create an extraordinary experience for guests. Produced by Mission Control Media, the series debuts in February.
  • Ghost Hunters International – Series produced by Pilgrim Films and Television returns on January 5 at 9p.
  • Merlin – Series will air on Fridays starting January 7 at 10p following WWE Friday Night Smackdown.
  • Ghost Hunters – Seventh season is back with 25 new episodes beginning in February; this series is also produced by Pilgrim Films and Television.
  • Destination Truth – The second half of season four will return in March. Produced by Ping Pong Productions.

Syfy will air the remaining episodes of Caprica on January 4 in a five-hour block from 6-11p. Despite a fan effort to save the series, Syfy said the series remains canceled. Fans had collected $2,350 and sent 2,880 apples, the show’s symbol to NBC Universal head Steve Burke.

WE tv is opening the New Year with a handful of new and returning original series premiering in January:

  • On January 2, the network debuts a fourth season of the wedding series My Fair Wedding with David Tutera at 9p and a fifth season opener of Rich Bride, Poor Bride at 10p.
  • Then on January 20, WE tv launches two new original series. Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? premieres at 9p with eight one-hour episodes featuring the famous mother-daughter duo starring together in their first reality series with Joan moving to L.A. to be with Melissa and her grandson, Cooper. This series airs each Thursday at 9p. And then at 10p WE tv debuts A Stand Up Mother following comedian Tammy Pescatelli as she juggles a comedy career in Los Angeles while raising her son in Meadville, PA close to her boisterous family. This original series has six, one-hour episodes airing each Thursday at 10p.

VH1 welcomes a new original series launching in early 2011 about top action sports stars and their partners in The X Life. The series will follow vert skater Pierre Luc Gagnon and his girlfriend Denise Russo; BMX dirt jumper Cory “Nasty” Nastazio and his girlfriend Nicole Panattoni; and FMXer Jeremy “Twitch” Stenburg and his wife Susie.  The series follows these couples as the guys participate in their respective action sports while the women fiercely protect their men and form a tight-knit group on the road. The X Life is produced by 51 Minds Entertainment, LLC, an Endemol Company and JT Entertainment.

MTV is moving forward with a sixth season of Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew with new episodes debuting in April 2011 hosted by Mario Lopez. Casting for the new season will commence in January searching for more groups of street dance crews ready to show off their style and moves. HISTORY premiered the US version of Top Gear on Sunday at 10p, attracting 1.1 million among both A18-49 and A25-54 in addition to 1.9 million total viewers. The US edition of Top Gear is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions and is a co-production between HISTORY and BBC Worldwide.


ABC Family picked up the last two installments of the Harry Potter film franchise in a new agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution (WBDTD). The deal allows ABC Family to air Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 in spring 2013 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (in theaters on July 15, 2011) during winter 2013. The deal gives the network the first position window for basic cable rights to all eight Harry Potter films in the franchise.

Debmar-Mercury and ITV Studios America are working together to launch the one-hour talk show The Jeremy Kyle Show for the 2011-2012 season.  Starring British talk show host Jeremy Kyle, this new daily show is an original American version based on Kyle’s UK program that airs on ITV1.  The talk show strip has been picked up in more than 70% of the US, including FOX stations in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.  Other stations clearing the show include some Sinclair, CBS, Hearst, Cox, Newport. CW Plus will also debut the show in September 2011. The US adaptation of The Jeremy Kyle Show will be distributed in the US by Debmar-Mercury in partnership with ITV Studios America. The show will be distributed globally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

Weigel Broadcasting Co. announced its classic TV network Me-TV will go national as a free, over-the-air channel for local television stations perhaps as early as January 2011. The 24/7 Me-TV network will feature many classic television series in categories of comedy, drama, western adventure and crime/courtroom/detective. Weigel Broadcasting holds long-term licensing deals for more than 50 series originating from the 1950s through the 1980s produced by various studios and independent producers. Me-TV has aired on Chicago and Milwaukee television stations. Further details about Me-TV will be revealed today at 12 noon CST at metvnetwork.com.


Discovery Channel US and BBC One are teaming on a new docu-series spanning the history of humans over 20,000 years in History of the World. The eight-episode series will include dramatic reconstruction combined with computer graphics and storytelling to tell the events, conflicts and personalities that have shaped human destiny. The series, created by Andrew Marr will be shot around the world and is produced by Discovery Channel US, BBC Vision Productions, BBC Worldwide and The Open University.

CBS has a one-hour medical drama in development from writer Ilene Chaiken, creator of The L Word. The project, titled Rhodes to Recovery is about an openly gay female trauma surgeon and her new colleague, a straight male neurosurgeon. Their work life becomes complicated when one starts dating the other’s ex-wife. CBS TV Studios is producing and Chaiken will executive produce along with Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum.

Lionsgate is commencing production next month on an untitled pilot for TNT starring Steven Weber and D.L. Hughley at I-25 Studios based in Albuquerque. The plot has Weber playing a widowed police detective working with his newly-married partner (Hughley). Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) is penning the pilot script. Steven Pearl and Ken Topolsky will serve as executive producers with Bill Hill as the line producer.

After saving such canceled series as Friday Night Lights and Damages from other networks, DIRECTV said it will begin a new focus for The 101 Network on original programming and acquiring television shows that have never been broadcast in the US, cites Variety

Friday A18-49 Analysis: With a slim lead, UNIV prevailed Friday night at 1.6/6 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, a tie occurred between CBS’ drama Medium and UNIV’s Eva Luna at 1.4/5 each, then a three-way tie happened for #2 among ABC’s Supernanny, The CW’s Smallville and FOX’s House repeat at 1.1/4 apiece. During 9p, UNIV shot ahead with Soy Tu Duena at 2.2/7 with ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? at 1.6/5. ABC then was the leader at 10p with 20/20 at 2.0/7 followed by CBS’ Blue Bloods at 1.6/5.

Independent production company Screentime has established The Screentime Group Board of Management consisting of Des Monaghan as Executive Chairman; Bob Campbell as Managing Director; Greg Haddrick as Group Executive Director; Philly de Lacey as Group Executive Director; and Larry Bass as Group Executive Director. Effective immediately, Jeff Kapugi was named Program Director at KEZK and KYKY, part of CBS RADIO in St. Louis.

Rainbow Media moved Bill Rosolie, previously EVP/Advertising Sales for AMC, to the newly-created position of EVP/Rainbow National Services, Ad Sales. Bill will spearhead the burgeoning digital advertising sales initiatives for Rainbow’s five networks: AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel, WE tv and Wedding Central in addition to Direct Response. Furthermore, Scott Collins, formerly EVP/Advertising Sales for WE tv and Wedding Central will increase his role at Rainbow and will now supervise advertising sales for AMC. Both Bill and Scott are based in New York and will continue to report to Arlene Manos, President/National Ad Sales, Rainbow Media.
