Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 22, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports is pulling back the curtain on the network’s plans for the inaugural PAC-12 and Big Ten Conference Championship games. With both conferences now at 12 teams and poised to hold their first-ever conference championship game, FOX will air the PAC-12 game on Friday, Dec. 2 at 8p with the Big Ten game the next day at 8p. Both contests will be preceded at 7:30p with live on-site pregame shows, while the Big Ten game is complemented by extensive coverage from BTN. Gus Johnson, Charles Davis and sideline analyst Tim Brewster will call the action on both nights, while FOX College Football host Kevin Frazier, Marcus Allen and Brewster anchor the pregame coverage, each night with a special guest analyst by their side.
BTN is slated to run more than five hours of pre and postgame coverage of the Big Ten Football Championship Game from Chicago and Indianapolis over two days, beginning with press conferences on Friday at 4p.
MLB and the players’ association have slated a news conference today to announce a new labor contract that has been inked by the two parties. According to the AP, the new agreement will include HGH testing, a minimum salary raise to $480,000 as well as luxury taxes on amateur draft signings and international free agents who join the major leagues.
Preliminary ratings for ESPN’s coverage of the down-to-the-wire NASCAR Sprint Cup championship delivered a 3.5 overnight score, according to Nielsen, rising 6% over last year’s crowning race.
In a battle of soccer brands on Sunday, FOX’s taped broadcast of Chelsea/Liverpool drew an overnight rating of 1.5 in the Nielsen overnights, not including audiences for the live game on FOX Soccer and FOX Deportes. Meanwhile ESPN’s primetime coverage of the MLS Cup that featured a Galaxy win over Houston earned a 0.8 overnight rating, up 60% over the 2010 rating of 0.5 for the final.
NFL ratings for the weekend saw dips for most broadcasts. CBS’ early-game coverage with regionalized action led by Cincinnati/Baltimore drew an 8.4 overnight rating for a 24% drop from 2010. The channel’s late game, with San Diego/Chicago drawing the most coverage, delivered a 14.2 for a 15% fall. NBC’s primetime matchup with NFC East rivals Philadelphia/NY Giants scored a 14.0 for the network, down 12% from the same game in 2010. FOX bucked the trend in singleheader action, averaging a 12.7 for a 2% climb.
On Saturday at 8p, NFL Network is bringing back the once a year Sound FX: Thursday Night Football Special Edition 49ers vs. Ravens,a one-hour “all-sound” edited version of the Thanksgiving Day Thursday Night Football game between the two teams. The show will be produced by NFL Films and is designed to offer a unique look into the first-ever meeting between NFL head coaching brothers, with over a dozen players and coaches wired for sound throughout the game. The show will also utilize 17 all-access cameras.
NFL Network will also be broadcasting 2011 Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet, which will be on TV for the first time. The Charlotte Touchdown Club and Football Writers Association of America announced the broadcast, with the award honoring the nation’s top NCAA defensive football player. While the award will be presented on Dec. 12, the broadcast will run on Dec. 16 at 4:30p.
Breaking reports state that John Harkes is out as ESPN’s lead MLS and US Soccer analyst and Taylor Twellman will step up to the plate. The news was broken by SI.com, stating that Harkes was recently informed that his contract would not be renewed. Twellman, meanwhile, spent the season working ESPN’s studio coverage and as the analyst for local broadcasts of the Philadelphia Union. Ian Darke will stay on as the network’s lead play-by-play voice for the U.S. national team, the English Premier League, Euro 2012 and select MLS broadcasts. The report also states that NBC Sports is chasing Arlo White and Kyle Martino to potentially handle microphone duties for their upcoming MLS coverage.
The NFL announced yesterday that the Lions/Saints game has been flexed to Sunday night on NBC. As a result, the Broncos/Vikings game, originally slated for CBS, will now run on FOX at 1p. In addition, the Colts/Patriots game, originally set as the SNF game on Dec. 4, now shifts back to 1p on CBS, while the Ravens/Browns will now run at 4p. The move was designed to prevent FOX from only holding two early games during the channel’s turn for a doubleheader.
A Delaware bankruptcy judge has now appointed a mediator in an attempt to resolve the differences between FOX Sports and the Dodgers over the proposed sale of media rights for the team, according to ESPN. The mediation will begin Nov. 28 in Los Angeles.
