Cynopsis

11/01/05

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 1, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

So you say you’d be all over the NBC Nightly News like white on rice if you weren’t so consumed by other things in your life, or because you never make it home in time for the 630p broadcast? Good news for you. NBC News will begin streaming its evening newscast on the internet starting Monday, November 7 at 10p ET at www.nightlynews.msnbc.com, and at no charge to you. The streaming broadcast will be identical to what you would have seen at 630p on your local NBC affiliate, plus news updates as warranted. Additionally, the site will offer archive broadcasts.

Tonight’s Premiere:
A&E
: Random 1 at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

CNN may be changing the face of its primetime lineup. Rumors are a-flying that Anderson Cooper will be moved to the primo 10p time period as anchor of NewsNight. As for Aaron Brown, CNN is rumored to be considering a second hour of NewsNight to air in the earlier time period at 7pm, thereby replacing Anderson Cooper 360º. Nothing definite and no decision or announcements have been made. And if you go looking for these guys this week – you won’t find ’em. They’re both on vacation.

And the program that will air immediately following the Super Bowl on ABC this year will be …… Grey’s Anatomy!

Fear Factor (Endemol USA) returns to the schedule on December 6 at 8p, sliding in where The Biggest Loser currently airs. Last season Fear Factor averaged a 4.2/11 A18-49 rating and 10.2 million viewers on Monday nights at 8p. The new time period will pit the reality show against a lineup of scripted series including grabbers NCIS and Bones.

AMC has upped the episode order for its new original series Movies That Shook the World, from 9 to 13 total episodes. The 30m weekly documentary series explores what it categorizes as the most influential movies of all time. Those films chosen as the focus of the four additional episodes are Philadelphia, Shaft, The Blair Witch Project and Pink Flamingos. Movies That Shook the World airs on Fridays at 10p.

For all the naysayers who said nobody would want to watch TV or videos on a little itty bitty iPod Video screen – Apple iTunes has announced that since its launch of the videos on October 12, just nineteen days ago, it has sold over one million videos to consumers (at $1.99 ea.). And by the way, have you seen what the picture looks like on that little screen? Gorgeous. I’m gonna have to get one. Top downloads to date include music videos from Michael Jackson, Kanye West and Fatboy Slim, and among the top TV downloads of which there are painfully few to choose from at this point – episodes of Lost and Desperate Housewives.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

NBC has picked up the pilot project Kidnapped which takes all the episodes of a single season to roll out the FBI investigation into the kidnapping of a teenage boy. The project is from Jason Smilovic and Michael Dinner, with Sony TV, 25C Productions and NBC Universal Television.

NBC‘s new game show Deal or No Deal from Endemol USA has named Howie Mandel as the show’s host. The show is described as contestants playing for a “top prize worth up to one million dollars in a high-energy match of nerves, instincts and raw intuition” and is based on a show currently airing in 38 countries. No launch date has been announced.

MTV has ordered a pilot of a new unscripted series called Cheerleader from Fox TV Studios which follows a year in the life of a highly competitive cheerleading squad based in Kentucky.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Shannon Jacobs has been named VP/CBS Communications Group which will begin December 5. In this newly created position, Shannon will support media relations for CBS Television’s corporate functions, including Sales, Research, Affiliate Relations, Finance, Governmental Affairs, Program Practices, Engineering and Digital Media. She will also work closely with the other Divisions supported by the CBS Communications Group, as well as the new CBS Corporation as a whole.

Tony Petitti has been named EVP/CBS Sports and will retain his title of Executive Producer, his current position. Tony will oversee the day-to-day operations of CBS Sports, along with his duties as Executive Producer and will continue to report to Sean McManus, President/CBS News and Sports.

Korn/Ferry International has added Fran Pomerantz as a Client Partner in the Media and Entertainment Market. Based in the New York City office, Ms. Pomerantz will focus primarily on the recruitment of senior-level media executives.

ABC Television Network upped two Affiliate Relations division executives: Ben DeVita to VP/Southeast Region, Station Relations, and Tracy Robertson Scott to Executive Director/Southeast Region, Station Relations. Ben was previously Exec Dir/Northeast Region, and Tracy was Director/Southern Region.

* RATINGS *

Sunday — A18-49 Analysis: ABC was in front on Sunday night despite Desperate Housewives being a repeat, delivering an overall 5.8/14 among A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC and CBS each had an hour of repeat programming on Sunday night, while Fox was in full repeats from 8-10p, and WB was wall to wall repeats with the exception of Charmed at 8p. Beginning at 7p, overrun of NFL football dominated the first hour of prime on Fox with a 5.7/16. At 8p ABC kicked up to #1 and stayed there for the rest of the night. EM: Home Edition earned a time period winning 6.8/16, Desperate Housewives was in front with a 5.7/13 for its repeat episode; and Grey’s Anatomy at 10p delivered a stellar 7.6/20.
