Discovery and Time Warner Cable signed an early renewal of their carriage deal that gives TWC and Bright House Networks TV Everywhere rights, something Discovery has been reluctant to grant in the past. “In addition to a robust VOD experience,” said TWC SVP of content acquisition Andrew I. Rosenberg, “we look forward to continually working with Discovery to provide more expansive out of home access to their content.”

~ IN THE NEWS ~

The NFL and MLB are siding firmly with broadcasters in the Aereo legal dispute. The sports organizations filed a brief last month that said if the online video startup, which streams broadcasters’ signals without authorization, prevails in court, it could mean the end of free sports on television. If Aereo is not shut down, says the brief, the option would be to move sports to pay-cable nets, where “Aereo-like services cannot hijack and exploit their programming.”

MTV pre-released the first episode of docu-series Generation Cryo last night on the MTV app. Cryo, about a teen who learns she has at least 15 half-siblings by a sperm donor dad, makes its on-air debut Monday, November 25 at 10p. The net’s pre-release of series Wait ‘Til Next Year last month helped drive the app’s biggest streaming week to date, increasing downloads 47 percent week over week.

In-demand Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has struck an eight-figure deal for TV with Sony Pictures Television. The “good folks at Sony have treated me very well over the years,” Gilligan told the Hollywood Reporter.

Live, interactive talent competition Rising Star is coming to ABC this summer. The format, which earned a 49.4 percent household share when it launched in Israel this fall, comes from Keshet DCP, a joint venture between Keshet International and DC Media. While NBC‘s The Voice and Fox‘s The X Factor are flirting with real-time voting this season, Star viewers vote via the show’s app in every round, with results posted immediately.

In the wake of its acquisition of preschool net Sprout, NBCUniversal announced it is shuttering children’s channel KidsCo, with minority partner Corus Entertainment, next year. “As one of many children’s linear services available in the international market, growing the KidsCo business has been challenging,” said a KidsCo statement.

Weight Watchers has partnered with ABC food and lifestyle show The Chew to host a cooking competition, “The Chew Search for the Weight Watchers Chef.” Six experienced cooks will be selected from entrants on thechew.com. After culinary challenges starting January 15, the person judged most skilled at creating delicious, healthy meals wins $75,000 and a one-year consulting contract with the weight loss firm.

NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson will join ESPN as a host of SportsCenter Tuesdays at 6p. Johnson, the first athlete to fill the position, could drive a new group of viewers to the show.

ABC‘s “Home for the Holidays” campaign will include five short films from U.S. veterans, as well as veteran-centered storylines on the net’s programs. The digital films begin to debut Monday, November 18 on ABC.com; Lady Antebellum will record a cover of “Celebrate Me Home” to serve as the theme song of the initiative.

An outgrowth of its TeenNick HALO Awards, which aired Sunday, Nickelodeon announced an initiative that recognizes one teen every month for their work helping their community. Starting in January 2014, the HALO Effect will award a $5000 grant to a charity chosen by the month’s winning teen.

Hockey fans can’t get enough of their faves, and the NHL is helping feed the beast by cooperating with a docu-series to air on NBC Sports Network and Canada’s CBC. NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other, a seven-parter from Bristow Global Media that will follow players prepping for games and traveling to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, premieres in early 2014.

Hallmark announced a Sunday, January 12 premiere date for When Calls the Heart. Narrated by Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey), the five-hour documentary from Great Divide Pictures premieres on public television in February 2014.

E! announced an hour-long special that catches up with Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt (“Speidi”),

The BBC and China Central Television signed a deal on Monday to develop documentaries geared toward the Chinese and Asian markets. “The projects we will be working on will enable us to bring our flagship BBC Earth content to audiences across China,” said BBC Worldwide global markets president Paul Dempsey, “and help bring together UK and Chinese creative talent.”

James Bond is headed back to U.K.’s ITV. After losing the movie franchise to BSkyB in 2012, the broadcaster struck a multi-year deal with MGM to bring the films, including 2012’s Skyfall, to ITV channels.

~ RATINGS ~

The premiere of Fox sci-fi drama Almost Human scored a 3.1 preliminary rating in A18-49, and over 9 million total viewers, making it the top scripted program in broadcast Sunday night. But it was AMC‘s The Walking Dead that topped scripted on all of television, with 6.05 A18-49 and over 12 million viewers. NBC’s Sunday Night Football grabbed a 9.1 rating in A18-49 in fast nationals, up 30 percent week to week. Without a gridiron lead-in this week, CBS‘s 60 Minutes dropped 1.4 ratings points to 1.7 in A18-49. CBS had a 1.6 adult rating for the night; ABC took 1.4 in the demo.

Lady Gaga earned a 4.9 rating/12 share in early household ratings as host and musical guest on NBC‘s Saturday Night Live, matching the season-high numbers for a Kerry Washington/Eminem combo on November 2. Gaga’s show also matched the Local People Meter number among A18-49 for the November 2 ep, with 2.6/12 rating in A18-49, falling shy of Miley Cyrus’s 2.7 in the demo in October.

Gold Rush was the top cable program in total viewers P2+ and households on Friday, and the number one show on television in Men. The Discovery Channel docu-series earned a 2.54 among M25-54 and 1.93 in M18-49.

The season three premiere of WE tv‘s Braxton Family Values delivered 1.3 million total viewers, the reality show’s strongest debut yet, up 27 percent from its March start. Among W18-49, the show drew 586,00 viewers, making it number three in ad-supported cable for the night in the demo.
