Good morning, it’s Tuesday, November 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The SEC issued a statement yesterday alleging that HDNet founder Mark Cuban sold 600,000 shares of search engine Mamma.com back in June of 2004 after coming across insider knowledge of an impending IPO at a discounted price. The often prescient tech investor, who made his fortune by selling Broadcast.com at the peak of the first .com frenzy, responded to the complaint on his mavericky blog with a note from his attorney. It states that the case has no merit and is “a product of gross abuse of prosecutorial discretion.”
News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch defended the future of the newspaper business claiming new distribution methods would eventually make up for lost print revenues in a public address over the weekend, part of the Boyer Lectures series read over Australian radio. “It’s true that in the coming decades, the printed versions of some newspapers will lose circulation,” he admitted. “But if papers provide readers with news they can trust, we’ll see gains in circulationon our web pages, through our RSS feeds, in emails delivering customized news and advertising, to mobile phones. In short, we are moving from news-papers to news-brands.”
Telemundo will unveil a newly revamped website on Jan. 1 as part of a new relationship with MSN that will include distribution of Telemundo.com across MSN Latino and other international MSN portals. The Hispanic network says the site will feature a cleaner design and more intuitive interface, as well as more intimate tie-ins to Telemundo TV programming. MSN will power video and ad serving for the site.
Oxygen became the latest NBCU brand to launch an e-commerce site based on a template from Seen ON.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Mobile content studio Fun Little Movies launched a new ad supported series satirizing environmental issues (perhaps timed to coincide with NBC Universal’s 2nd annual Green week.) Mad TV’s Debra Skelton and Goodnight Burbank’s Hayden Black play the anchors of No News Is Good News. O.J. trial star Kato Kaelin camps it up as an investigative reporter in the first episode, seeking to find out who really killed the electric car.
Online comedy portal RooftopComedy is partnering with legendary New York City comedy club Comic Strip Live to record and distribute nightly comedy performances. Stand-up acts such as Robert Hawkins’ riff on Gay Pride parades will be available on RooftopComedy.com and syndicated out to a number of partner outlets including Nokia, Motorola UK, iTunes, Current TV, Hulu and Dailymotion.
Online HD animation community MyToons.com unveiled the Digital Portfolio System, allowing artists and animators to display their portfolios online. Members can choose from variety of pre-designed layouts or design their portfolio from scratch.
Video entertainment site Metacafe launched a new Music Channel powered by Sony BMG’s Myplay music video network.
Call for Content: Intel is powering a crowd sourcing initiative on Facebook asking any and all animators to contribute to a new computer-generated animated short slated for theatrical release, to be produced and directed by former Sony Pictures Digital President Yair Landau. Intel has provided the necessary tools and 3-D models for animators to strut their stuff; creators whose content is selected for the film will be awarded a new Dell desktop PC weekly. An international jury of animation experts will select the shots to be considered for the film but Landau will have the final say as to which submissions make the final cut. “Live Music,” the name of the CGI short, is a love story between Riff, a rock n’ roll guitar, and Vanessa, a classical violin.
Tivo added a new feature to its line up of broadband-connected DVRs – now you can order a pizza for delivery or pick up from Dominos directly from your remote. The service is free but, of course, you have to pay for the pizza when it shows up at your door. And don’t forget to tip the driver.
Mobile chip giant Qualcomm signed a deal with Skyhook Wireless to deploy Skyhook’s Wi-Fi-powered location technology into its mobile GPS platforms. Skyhook’s WPS solution will deliver Wi-Fi positioning for gpsOne phones and enable hybrid location-positioning capabilities on select future platforms.
Computers using Intel‘s new desktop processing chip – the Core i7 – went on sale from Dell, Gateway and others. Intel says the chip will perform between 4 to 6 times faster than its current platform. The new chips are based on a newly designed microarchitecture, dubbed Nehalem, which significantly improves power management and memory control.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
With online advertising growth hard to come by in the coming months, Hispanics are finally being tapped a viable audience on the web. Yahoo announced it will revamp its U.S. Hispanic offering to better serve advertisers looking to reach the demographic. The company is launching Yahoo Publicidad, a resource site created for current and prospective advertisers looking to target U.S. and Latin American Hispanics. The site includes detailed overviews of multiple marketing solutions offered by Yahoo including sponsored searches, display advertising and mobile marketing.
TNS launched a new online advertising monitoring tool combining cookie-tracking technology with a panel-based method to enable more accurate analysis of online ad consumption. An alternative to those annoying pop up surveys, the tool measures an ad’s effectiveness at reaching its target audience by cross-referencing data from TNS’s 6th Dimension Panel which measures usage on multiple computers for each user.
Crowdsourcing marketing start-up Passenger is powering an invite-only online community generationbenz.com for Mercedes-Benz to enable younger consumers to interact and collaborate with the company’s brand. Mercedes will be able to elicit feedback and perspectives on its vehicles, study brand positioning and socio-cultural trends, preview upcoming advertising and marketing campaigns and engage in live discussions with gen Y users.
Travel Channel Media launched a new content sharing and ad network dubbed Flight Deck powered by Denver-based travel technology company Home&Abroad. The platform provides small to mid-size online travel publishers and suppliers with ad sales expertise to create an ad revenue stream by providing users with trip planning tools. Travel Channel Media will utilize the Adify vertical ad network platform to provide the technology and back-office operational support for the network.
Consumers are adopting digital content services such as social networking and videos on mobile phones and personal computers at an accelerated pace, according to a new multinational survey from IBM, and they’re willing to share information with advertisers on these platforms if the results are targeted to match their lifestyles. Seventy-six percent of consumers surveyed have already watched video on their PC, up 27% from last year. Thirty-two percent indicated they have viewed video on a portable device or mobile phone, up 45% from last year. The 2,800 respondents to the survey were open about their new media consumption habits:
- Over 50% of respondents who have watched online video claim they watch slightly less (15%) to significantly less (36%) television as a result
- When asked how they prefer to view advertising associated with online videos, the majority said they prefer to see it as pre or post-rolls
- Close to 60% of total respondents were willing to provide information about themselves (such as age, gender, lifestyle or communications preferences) in exchange for something of value. Younger respondents had fewer concerns about revealing personal preferences
Online video joint venture Hulu will catch up to YouTube in U.S. ad sales despite having more than 10 times the unique user base (83 million vs. 6 million), according to a forecast from digital media research firm Screen Digest reported in the FT. Screen estimates YouTube will notch $100 million in U.S. ad sales this year, compared to $70 million for Hulu, while each will post $180 million in U.S. ad revenues in 2009.
Tivo expanded the sample size of its Stop||Watch second-by-second measurement service from 20,000 to 100,000 subscribers. The service monitors live and time-shifted viewing and provides visibility into fast-forwarding of programming and commercials. To promote the offering TiVo released data showing a year-over-year comparison of broadcast program and commercial primetime viewing for the month of September; the data shows an apparent surge in broadcast viewing particularly in the Time-shifted category, which grew by 24% over the previous year.

Arena Media Networks (AMN) delivered over 173 million video ad exposures through its AMNtv “Live In-Game” platform to fans attending Major League Baseball games during the 2008 season, according to a new report from Nielsen’s On Location Media division. Survey participants spent on average 37 minutes in those areas where AMN screens are present and over 50% of respondents recalled being exposed to the content to those screens.
Online ad network Mindset Media announced three new executive hires. JB Brokaw joins the company as Executive Director, Sales & Business Development, Rosemary Biagioni comes aboard as Finance Director and Calvin Norman joins as Sales Director, Mindset Media Network.
iThentic shareholders, Barna-Alper Productions and iThentic LLC, announced a strategic partnership and restructuring of the online and mobile video company ithentic.com, transferring management of its operations to web and animation company, Smiley Guy Studios. The business will continue to operate from Toronto, but will move to Smiley Guy Studios’ offices. In exchange for its operating role, Smiley Guy will become an owner in the business and operate it as a subsidiary of Smiley Guy Studios. Catherine Tait becomes Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jonas Diamond will assume the role of CEO, and Smiley Guys’ Jeremy Diamond and Denny Silverthorne will assume the roles of Creative Directors.
Destination Media also appointed three new executives. Dana Gruskin was named VP/National Sales in the Western Region, Jeannine Palmieri becomes Director of National Sales in the Western Region and Michael Farrell was named Director of National Sales in the Eastern Region. Each new hire will work to foster new and existing client relationships for Destination Media’s Gas Station TV and C-Store TV networks across the country.
If this past election cycle taught us anything it’s that new media tools are more powerful than any platform known to man in rallying users around a cause. The latest example of this is the simple community site Join the Impact powered by Wetpaint, founded days after California’s gay marriage ban Prop. 8 was approved by voters. The site, which consists of blog postings instructing visitors about how to get involved, recruited users through Facebook and Twitter. It is now being widely credited for bringing out record crowds for Saturday’s 300-city international protest on the issue. It will be interesting to see if the site can use its newfound clout to continue to mobilize its community. While the sites’ founders are pleased as punch with the outcome – comparing the mass protests to the historic Greenwhich Village Stonewall Riot of 1969 – they urge users to continue the conversation by posting stories, videos and photos. Next up on the calendar for Join the Impact is the Day Without Gay gathering on Dec. 10.
