Good morning it’s Tuesday, November 15, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Last week’s article, An Open Letter to HR People, received more emails than any other article in the last six months. Most of them thanked Cynopsis for writing the article and told horror stories of bad interviewers. I also received several emails from HR professionals, some that agreed with the article others that didn’t. Here is one that didn’t but makes some very interesting points.

Dear Candidate,

To answer the issues in your letter, I have chosen certain points that you need have a reality check on.

If I am sitting when you come into my office, do not be offended if I do not get up. I am doing my job and half the job of someone that has been laid off in my department! Ok, Mr. or MS. Really? If you have John on the top of your resume, that is what I am going to call you. This is not a social event, this is an interview.

I will ask you about your biggest weakness! Is it a dumb question? Yes and No. I want to see how you handle the question. If I am seeing 10 people today, 7 of you have to be voted off the island. The fastest way to get voted off the island, is you voting yourself off. The two questions I use are the WEAKNESS and WHY YOU ARE NO LONGER AT YOUR LAST JOB, or WHY ARE YOU LOOKING TO LEAVE YOUR JOB. If you are not prepared with a weakness, you say the first thing that pops in your head, which by the way is detrimental to the job you are interviewing for. Why you are gone from any job on your resume; this is where the anger, hurt, and ill will of former companies comes out. I don’t need the whole story, but you have the need to have honesty vomit and tell me EVERYTHING. Just a simple answer will do.

I am glad you have done your research, but surprisingly, most people do not! I will read your resume in front of you because there is certain information on there that I will want to ask you about.

I am not going to explain our hiring process to you. If you want to know, then you ask. And ask if it is alright to follow up after that.

I WILL NEVER tell a candidate that I am not considering them for this job. I do not know HOW YOU ARE GOING TO REACT. I wish all candidates would be grownup and professional!

If you have a pitch, it is YOUR JOB, not mine to say it. I am not a dentist trying to pull teeth out of you.

Putting you at ease? Really? Would you like me to have cookies and milk for you? This is an interview! Not story time before going to bed. Every candidate is nervous. That is a given. Use that energy to be ON, attentive and alive!

Three things all candidates need to remember before going into an interview:

  • There is high interest level in you as a candidate.
  • Who trained the person interviewing you? Probably no one.
  • The person interviewing you could be as nervous as you are.Not the HR person since they generally interview people all the time, but the hiring managers could be the nervous ones.

Things you must do before leaving an interview:

  • Thank me for my time. Show respect.
  • Shake my hand.
  • Get my card. Spell my name properly.
  • Ask what the hiring process is. If I say next Friday we will decide who is coming back, you should ask if it ok to follow up on that following Tuesday if you haven’t heard from me. And then call that Tuesday. The reality is I want this done quickly. The real reality is that this is not the most important thing on my desk. It never happens in the time frame we want it to happen in.
  • CLOSE THE DEAL! Do you want the job? Then tell me! WRITE A THANK YOU NOTE IF YOU WANT THE JOB. Most candidates do not write one! Even in this market.

Showcase Your Leadership Skills During Your Job Search

With the economy stubbornly stuck in neutral and even more graduates flooding the work force, the competition for available positions is fiercer than ever. In 2010, the average number of applicants for each job was nearly 70, up from 48 in 2009. I shudder to think what the latest statistics would reveal.

If you’re conducting a job search, you should assume you will be vying against as many as 100 worthy competitors, many who are as qualified perhaps even more so than you are.

So how can you stand out from the crowd? By showcasing your leadership skills. Hiring managers aren’t just looking to fill slots, they are searching for future leaders who can help them take their companies to the next level.

What traits are they looking for?

Recently, PsychTests.com, a firm specializing in personality, career, and IQ assessments, conducted a survey into what separated great leaders from the also-rans. Here are the traits that topped their list:

Goal setting.
Prospective employers look for new hires who can set goals and create a workable action plan to achieve them.

Motivating others.
The ability to motivate others to work toward a common goal is a key leadership trait that will make you stand out to the hiring manager. Provide examples of times that you have rallied the troops to get them excited about completing an important project.

Coaching.
A good leader is willing and able to help the other members of their team develop to their greatest potential.

Problem solving.
Every project has its obstacles. A leader will attack them with gusto and refuse to let them get in the way of meeting the deadline for completing the project and achieving his or her objectives.

Vision.
In order to lead, you must be able to see where you are going. How clear is your vision when you are working on a project? Can you visualize the end result?

Setting an example.
Leaders lead by example. Your team is looking to you to demonstrate the behaviors that they should be emulating. What do they see?

Agreeableness.
The ability to get along well with others is a key trait that human resources managers look for when deciding which candidate to hire for a position. Conflicts between employees will make their own jobs more difficult.

Conscientiousness.
Attention to details is an important leadership trait. You don’t want to micromanage everything, but you do need to be a careful planner and be diligent about following up to ensure that everything is on schedule.

Open-mindedness.
Good leaders are open to new ideas and thoughts. They listen to input from others instead of limiting themselves to what they think they know.

The more you personify these leadership traits throughout your job search, the more likely you’ll stand out from the dozens of others fighting for the same position.

I’ve compiled a hefty list of companies I’d like to work for, and I am starting to see some jobs I would like to apply to at them. The problem I’ve noticed is that I don’t know when to actually start applying for these open positions. I expect to finish school in late April 2012 with my Communications degree, so when would be the best time to start sending out my resume?

Start applying now. While most people will wait to do a job search a few weeks before or even after they graduate, you’ll be ahead of them by starting early. The job search process takes a tremendous amount of time and energy. By starting early, you’ll gain three things:

More information about the field and companies to help you improve your chances of getting employed quickly.

Grow and expand your network so more desired opportunities come your way.

Have time to customize your resume for each position.

Once you secure the interview, the hiring process can take months so you’ll be glad you started early.

One other question I have is pertaining to informational interviews. I’ve had a few already, but I got them through referrals. How can I go about requesting these on my own? One network I really want to work for is Showtime, and I saw on LinkedIn they had an employee in a department I’m interested in that was an alumni from my school. Would it be inappropriate to request an informational interview with her? If not, how would I go about asking?

Yes, I do recommend you asking for an informational interview. The key will be to put your school in the subject line so she will be more inclined to open the email. The first paragraph should include the school you both went to and anything from your background that will enhance your credibility.

Also, try to include anything that you both have in common while attending school, such as belonging to the same organizations, having the same major, earning similar awards or scholarships, etc. The more “connections” you can establish, the more likely she’ll be inclined to “help out a fellow alum.”

I am a 55 year old who feels much younger than I look. I am currently looking for a job, to what extent should I go to make myself look younger? Dye my gray hair? Update my wardrobe? Are more people getting plastic surgery to look younger for interviews? Are there any industries that value expensive experience over cheap youth?

You don’t want anything to get in the way of you getting the job you want. Thus, if your age would be an impediment, you need to focus on minimizing this as a hindrance. This is what I recommend: Make your wardrobe up-to-date. When you go shopping, invite a younger friend along who is more aware of current styles. Find a department store with a sales person who can provide you with a wardrobe the will make you look sharp today.

Review how you look. Ask friends, family members and even your hairstylist what about your look could be improved upon. Do you get rid of glasses and have contacts. Do you dye your hair? Do you change your haircut to look more fashionable?

Besides adjusting your wardrobe and look, it’s vital that you let your younger attitude come across in the interview. How you act and feel has as much importance as anything else.

Peter Liguori, COO at Discovery Communications will be exiting the company at the end of this year. During his time at Discovery, Peter spearheaded many initiatives globally including the company’s joint venture launches with The Hub, OWN and 3net. David Zaslav, President/CEO at Discovery Communications said, “Pete’s leadership, enthusiasm and creative vision have brought a fresh and important perspective to Discovery. Around the world, our programming, marketing and promotional efforts have greatly benefited from his energy, experience and creative eye. I am particularly grateful to Pete for tackling some pretty challenging special assignments, including the launches of our joint venture networks – The Hub, OWN and 3net. Pete is just a terrific guy and talented executive, and I want to thank him for the many significant contributions he has made at all levels of Discovery Communications.” Going forward, Discovery Communications plans on eliminating the position of COO within its management structure.

CNN appointed Eric Sherling as Director/Washington Programming. Most recently, Eric served as Executive Broadcast Producer of Good Morning America at ABC News. In his new role at CNN, Eric will manage the political programming emanating from Washington consisting of The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, John King, USA, State of the Union with Candy Crowley and Reliable Sources. He will additionally hold a leadership role with CNN’s special campaign coverage involving debates, primary nights and Election night coverage.

Patricia Lyle was tapped as GM/Directive with Meredith Xcelerated Marketing (MXM), the worldwide full-service agency of Meredith Corporation. Patricia joins from Tribal DDB where she served as Managing Partner. At MXM, she will head the analytics and campaign management team. Patricia reports to Directive CEO Jack Wolf and MXM’s EVP/GM David Brown.

Diane Villegas began a new position at REELZCHANNEL as Director/Affiliate Marketing. The former Comcast Cable executive will be in charge of expanding the network’s distribution levels via affiliate marketing goals which Diane will create, execute and maintain.

New York-based Sound Lounge hired Jill Silberstein as Executive Producer, effective immediately. In her new position, Jill replaces Gloria Pitagorsky who departed the company in October to pursue independent projects. Jill will head daily client communications and oversee budgets for the television commercial unit. Jill will also co-lead the company’s Hispanic division with Juan Aceves and Vicky Ferraro. Jill reports to Marshall Grupp, Tom Jucarone and Peter Holcomb, all Partners at Sound Lounge.

Effective immediately, Scott Malaga was tapped as SVP/Strategic Partnerships at Intersport where he will supervise sales activities for the Sponsorship and Event Marketing unit.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. named Joe Lagani to the newly-created role as Chief Revenue Officer. Joe will spearhead all advertising sales efforts in addition to cross-platform integrations and strategic brand relationships for its various media business assets including the magazines Martha Stewart Living, Martha Stewart Weddings, Whole Living and Everyday Food along with its website and iPad and iPhone apps as well as television and radio platforms.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) handed promotions to two longtime sales executives, Flory Bramnick and Philip Martzolf. Flory was elevated to EVP/US Cable Sales and now manages all US cable sales operations for SPT. Flory will also supervise the US cable sales teams in both the New York and Los Angeles offices. Philip advances to EVP/US Syndication Sales and now heads all first-run and off-net syndicated programming sales in addition to current feature film sales and titles from SPT’s extensive library. Philip will also manage the US syndication teams based in four regional offices in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Atlanta. Congratulations, Flory and Philip on your well-deserved promotions!

Univision Communications added two to cover its political advertising efforts: Joe DelGrosso as EVP/Managing Director, Political & Advocacy Group and Matt Boxer as SVP/Political & Advocacy Group. Joe will lead Univision’s political task force with the goal to position Univision as a leader in this arena while Matt will manage the political sales development effort, reporting to Joe DelGrosso. Joe and Matt will be based in New York though also have offices in Washington, D.C.

Michael Waldron joins TV Land as VP/Creative Director, Design and Animation. Based in New York, Michael will report to Kim Rosenblum, EVP/Marketing and Creative. Most recently, Michael was with the creative company Nailgun* which he co-founded.

AKQA Media, the media, search and analytics unit of AKQA announced the company is hiring 15 new staffers for its practice in the next three months. The company has been bolstered in revenue growth by more than 50 percent over the previous year by servicing such clients as Audi, Clorox and Turner Broadcasting. New hires at AKQA Media in the areas of search, analytics and media buying and planning include: Shabnum Mehra as Group Media Director concentrating on social media in the US market; Allen Stern as Group Media Director to assist with leading The Clorox Company account; and Michael Mathog as Director/Analytics to head a team focused on solving online analytics problems.

Beginning November 14, Meghan Hooper takes on a new position as VP/Program Acquisitions at Lifetime Networks. Meghan will work closely with Christian Drobnyk, SVP/Scheduling and Acquisitions to manage all program acquisitions for Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network and Lifetime Real Women. Based in New York, Meghan will also report directly to Christian Drobnyk. Meghan will join Lifetime Networks from NBCUniversal where she was Director/Program Acquisitions and Administration.

ABC News welcomes three to its ranks starting with Kelly Cobiella joining as a Correspondent based in London. For the last eight years, Kelly has been with CBS News based in Miami, Dallas and New York. ABC News also hired meteorologist Ginger Zee to the weekend edition of Good Morning America who hails from WMAQ in Chicago. Ginger begins at ABC News this Wednesday and will first appear as Weather Anchor on GMA Weekend this Saturday. Thirdly, ABC News added Bazi Kanani as a Digital Journalist based in Nairobi. Previously, Bazi was with KUSA in Denver where she was a general assignment reporter and anchor of the weekday 9p newscast.

Effective November 28, Mark Hong will become NSM at WTXF FOX 29 in Philadelphia where he will supervise National Sales efforts and report to Allyson Meyers, VP/GSM.
