In a potential precedent-setting move, Warner Bros. Television Group and ABC made a deal involving a new twist in the usual syndication rights and digital distribution windows. The deal allows ABC to distribute any series produced by WBTVG during the current 2011-2012 and the 2012-2013 seasons online through ABC.com and Hulu’s ad-supported platform. The series will also be available as part of ABC’s branded VOD offering though other cable, satellite and telco providers. Via these platforms, viewers will have access to the five most recently televised episodes of each series the day after its network broadcast. The deal also extends rights for WBTVG to take a show into off-network syndication a year earlier than the traditional four-year mark and sell a serialized ABC series to a subscription-based VOD service such as Netflix after the completion of each season. This new deal affects current ABC series including The Middle, Suburgatory and the upcoming Work It that are produced by Warner Bros. Television Group.
