In a potential precedent-setting move, Warner Bros. Television Group and ABC made a deal involving a new twist in the usual syndication rights and digital distribution windows.  The deal allows ABC to distribute any series produced by WBTVG during the current 2011-2012 and the 2012-2013 seasons online through ABC.com and Hulu’s ad-supported platform.  The series will also be available as part of ABC’s branded VOD offering though other cable, satellite and telco providers.  Via these platforms, viewers will have access to the five most recently televised episodes of each series the day after its network broadcast.  The deal also extends rights for WBTVG to take a show into off-network syndication a year earlier than the traditional four-year mark and sell a serialized ABC series to a subscription-based VOD service such as Netflix after the completion of each season.  This new deal affects current ABC series including The Middle, Suburgatory and the upcoming Work It that are produced by Warner Bros. Television Group.

Upcoming nationally syndicated talk show Katie has now cleared in more than 80% of the US, as announced by Disney-ABC Domestic Television.  Disney-ABC Domestic Television has secured station clearances and early fringe time periods for the one-hour daily daytime talk show set to debut in September 2012.  Katie, starring Katie Couric will now air in 55 out of the top 60 markets.  Recent sales to station groups include those to Granite, Griffin, Media General, Meredith, Raycom and Sinclair and the most up-to-date station clearances include KSTP/Minneapolis; WEWS/Cleveland; KMOV/St. Louis; KGW/Portland; WSMV/Nashville; WCMH/Columbus; KSL/Salt Lake City; WLOS/Greenville-Asheville; KSAT/San Antonio; WZZM/Grand Rapids; and WBMA/Birmingham among others.

NBC approved a pilot order for a one-hour drama titled Beautiful People from Cougar Town consulting producer/director Michael McDonald.  Beautiful People is described as a “what if” drama set 10 minutes in the future where families of mechanical human beings serve the human population until some of the mechanicals begin to “awaken.” Universal Television and ABC Studios are producing.

TLC begins production this week on the new series, Irish Dancing Tweens (wt) that goes inside the world of competitive Irish Dance tournaments.  The series will roll out in summer 2012 and later next year via worldwide.  The show will follow several different dance schools and the episodes will hone in on specific dancers as they journey from rehearsal to the competitive stage.  The series is executive produced by Sirens Media.

In other TLC news, the network has commenced production on its new docu-series starring actress/comedienne Niecy Nash, her husband and their new life together as a blended family.  Shed Media US is producing the yet-to-be-titled half-hour series with eight episodes set to premiere in early 2012.  In June, Nash married her husband Jay Tucker as 5 million viewers watched the two-hour special Niecy Nash’s Wedding Bash on TLC.

Casting Call: Sundance Channel is casting for its series Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys in Denver and New Orleans.  The series looks at the special relationship between women and their gay best friends.  Straight women who have loving relationships with their gay BFFs in Denver and New Orleans should send an email to [email protected].
