Good morning! It’s Tuesday, November 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Showtime Networks has found the new face of its growing sports division, naming Stephen Espinoza as the company’s new Executive Vice President, General Manager, Showtime Sports and Event Programming. Espinoza will now be responsible for running the day-to-day activities of the sports and event group, which will include developing and executing the overall strategy of the group and its pay-per-view unit. Previously, he served as a partner in the firm of Ziffren Brittenham LLP where he specialized in representing athletes and sports personalities, including boxers Oscar De La Hoya and Mike Tyson.
Despite owners threats that their latest proposal to NBA players for a CBA would be the last and best offer, players voted to reject the league’s offer. In addition, representatives told reporters that they would now begin dismantling the union and being an anti-trust suit against the league. Commissioner David Stern said over the weekend that if the union was dissolved, all player contracts could become voided.
NBC’s broadcast of Sunday Night Football was the top broadcast of the night, according to Nielsen, scoring a 14.5 overnight rating and a 23 share. That was up 2% over the equivalent game last year and marks the fourth-best overnight rating for Sunday Night Football this season. Top markets were led by Boston, followed by Providence, Las Vegas, San Diego and Sacramento.
ESPN’s airing of the first Penn State game without former coach Joe Paterno clearly drove interest in the broadcast, giving the channel a 3.8 overnight rating, according to Nielsen. That’s good for a 120% rise over last year’s comparable game to mark the highest noon game rating for the sport on the channel in at least ten years.
Following the debut of UFC on FOX over the weekend, Versus MMA analyst Ariel Helwani tweeted that the second FOX broadcast of the sport will be expanded to 2 ½ hours.
MX Sports Pro Racing and NBC Sports Group division Alli Sports have reached a deal to bring the 2012 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship to NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network. The broadcast will feature three live hours on NBC Sports and 21 hours of race programming on the NBC Sports Network, with 11 hours live.
NBA TV is launching a six-part original series dubbed Open Court that will feature NBA and basketball stories, as well as opinions and commentary from a cross section of NBA announcers. The first episode will run on Tuesday Nov. 22 on 9p, following the channel’s Game Time. The series will be moderated by Ernie Johnson and will feature Charles Barkley, Steve Kerr, Reggie Miller, Kenny Smith, Steve Smith, Chris Webber, as well as Shaquille O’Neal. Open Court is produced by Turner Sports and will take place on a custom built set at NBA TV’s Atlanta studios.
ESPNU announced that the channel will premiere The Play That Changed College Football on Thursday, December 1 at 11p. The one-hour film will serve as the second in a series of four documentaries that are part of the Storied documentary series. The film is narrated by Luke Perry and will examine the first SEC Championship football game.
Cablevision wrapped up a deal to bring in the Latin American Sports Network to viewers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The channel features programming such as the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League, Puerto Rican COLICEBA “AAA” Baseball, Cuban Baseball League and broadcasts the games of the Pacific Mexican League and League of Mexican Baseball.
SPEED is gearing up for its annual programming and promotional event, SPEED Dream Ride, for Thanksgiving Day with a slate of marathons as well as the opening of the national consumer “Dream Ride” sweepstakes that will give the winner a chance to win a spring VIP experience at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Five winners and their guests will spend three days at the track to ride along with Andretti, Kyle Petty, Jason Pridmore and Tanner Foust as well as on Monster Truck Gravedigger.
NASCAR has named Kim Brink as Managing Director, Brand and Consumer Marketing. Brink comes to NASCAR from General Motors, where she served as executive director of advertising and sales promotion for Cadillac.
The Minnesota Vikings began a campaign last night to build support for a new stadium for the team by featuring footage of heroes like Bud Grant and promising jobs and economic development for the community. The team said that the campaign will include radio, print and online ads. The team is seeking public support for a $1.1 billion stadium.
ESPN tapped Mark Nolan to lead the company’s sales and marketing strategy designed to increase global expansion of the X Games at VP of X Games Sales. Nolan recently served as Director of Olympic Sales at NBC where his team developed sales and marketing strategies for the 2010, 2012 and 2014-20 Olympic Games.
The Big Ten has taken Joe Paterno’s name off the Big Ten’s football championship trophy following the former coach’s scandal at Penn State, according to the AP. Commissioner Jim Delany said in the article that it would be “inappropriate” to keep Paterno’s name on the trophy that will be handed to the winner of the Dec. 3 Big Ten title game. The trophy had been named the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy but will now be named the Stagg Championship Trophy.
espnW.com has launched Journeys and Victories, a new, original series of designed to tell inspiring stories from female athletes. The series will be produced by ESPN anchor Hannah Storm’s production company, Brainstormin’ Productions. The series was created in partnership with Procter & Gamble brands Venus and Secret to integrate content and events around the female athlete.
UFC is set to once again stream preliminary-card fights from Saturday’s UFC 139 event for free on Facebook, according to various reports. The stream will feature five bouts ahead of Spike TV’s UFC Prelims special.
