Cynopsis: Sports
11/13/12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 13, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Four teams and six bowls. That’s the final decision from the BCS commissioners and Presidential Oversight Committee for the semifinals of the upcoming college football playoff system. The vote was unanimous, with the highest-rated champion from the so-called “Group of Five” conferences — the Big East, Conference USA, Mountain West, Sun Belt and Mid-American now officially earning an automatic entry in one of the bowls with the likes of the Pac-12, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 and SEC. The new format will begin with the 2014-2015 season.

“We recognize that the BCS has been controversial in some years, but we also believe it has turned college football from a regional sport into a wonderfully popular national sport, much to the benefit of our alumni, student-athletes and fans,” the twelve members of the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee said in a joint statement. “We now seek to build an even better college football season by creating a four-team playoff to crown the national champion, while protecting the regular season and the bowl experience. We’re delighted to support this format and congratulate the group of conference commissioners who have done so much for college football and who worked so hard to make this happen.”

At the meeting, the group also decided on the rotation of the semifinal games among six bowl sites and rotation of the championship game among neutral sites and the creation of a selection committee that will rank the teams to play in the playoff. The oversight committee also will give the commissioners authority to finalize a media-rights deal with ESPN, according to ESPN.com, which will be worth about $475 million a year over 12 years.

Finally, the NCAA Tournament is coming back to Madison Square Garden. After a 53-year absence, the NCAA announced that the famed venue will host the East Regional in 2014, marking the first time since 1961 that the tournament has played the site. Other regional sites in 2014 are set to include Anaheim, Indianapolis and Memphis. According to the organization, second and third-round sites that year will be Buffalo, Milwaukee; Orlando, Raleigh, San Antonio; San Diego; Spokane, and St. Louis with The Final Four played at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. In 2015, Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles and Syracuse will be the regional sites. The second and third-round locations will include: Charlotte, Columbus, Jacksonville, Louisville, Omaha, Pittsburgh, Portland, and Seattle. The Final Four will be held in Indianapolis. First-round games will continue to be played in Dayton, Ohio for both years.

The 2012 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hits truTV on Friday and Saturday, from Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The action begins with a doubleheader featuring BYU/Florida St. at 7p, followed by Notre Dame/Saint Joseph’s. Coverage will continue Saturday, with the Consolation Game at 7p, followed by the Championship Game. Brian Anderson will call the games on the channel alongside analysts Greg Anthony and Steve Smith with Craig Sager reporting courtside and contributor Seth Davis. As part of truTV’s coverage, St. Joseph’s will offer the network with special “all-access” coverage which will allow truTV’s cameras into the team’s locker room for exclusive behind-the-scenes footage throughout the tournament.

CBS Sports selected its SEC on CBS football game for Saturday, Nov. 24 at 3:30p with the famed “Iron Bowl,” pitting Auburn and Alabama. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will call the game, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The 2012 NASCAR season wraps up this week, with ESPN offering live telecasts of the final races for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17-18. An extended NASCAR Countdown airs at 1:30p on Sunday, Nov. 18, with a 3:15 p.m. green flag for the Ford EcoBoost 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race that will conclude the Chase. ESPNEWS will air NASCAR’s championship contenders news conference from Miami on Thursday at noon.

Meanwhile, SPEED is gearing up for an expanded programming slate covering the Grand Prix of the United States, the penultimate event on the 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship circuit, and running Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1:30p from Austin. Coverage will be hosted by Bob Varsha, with analysis from David Hobbs and Steve Matchett, and pit reporting from Will Buxton. Coverage of the inaugural event from the newly built Circuit of the Americas starts on Friday, with the opening practice session on the 20-turn, 3.427-mile track at 10a.

While we are on the subject, SPEED cameras were in the middle of the melee that broke out Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, with cameras capturing never-seen footage that will air Thursday at 7p Inside Michael Waltrip Racing: A Championship Quest Part II, a one-hour special on the network.

After being scrapped due to condensation on the court, The Carrier Classic will indeed return to the USS Yorktown to open the college basketball season next year, according to the AP. Morale Entertainment President Mike Whalen said Monday his group and the Patriots Point Development Authority have agreed to hold the event again next year despite the cancellation, noting that organizers believe they have an engineering solution to keep the surface dry for next season.

WWE is partnering with USA Network and NBC to honor the United States Armed Forces with its 10th annual holiday special WWE Tribute to the Troops presented by Slim Jim. The salute will air as a two-hour television special on Wednesday, December 19 at 9p on USA Network and as a one-hour television special on Saturday, December 22 at 9p on NBC. The special will feature performances by Grammy Award-nominated, international superstars Kid Rock and Flo Rida, WWE stars, The Muppets, Access Hollywood and NBC Sports’ Michelle Beadle and more.

Yahoo! Sports made an apology to its fantasy football players after a site outage left users with last-minute lineup problems and possible lost money on an NFL Sunday, according to the AP. Ken Fuchs, head of entertainment, sports and games at Yahoo Inc., emailed players early Monday to apologize for the issues, noting that “The outage started around Noon ET (awful timing we know) and while our team was on it immediately we are still working on various pieces. Our team is continuing to work on identifying and resolving the root cause. We have restored full functionality on the website, and we’re working for a final fix for our mobile apps. Currently data and scores can be viewed but for now you cannot make transactions or change line-ups from the apps.”

The Main Event
