Cynopsis: Kids!

5/08/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 8, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the Cable Show 2007 in Las Vegas.

The current tally for the opening weekend of Columbia’s Spider-Man 3 continues with weekend numbers now fully in.  The movie earned a worldwide gross of $382 million, and $151 million of that came from North America (up from yesterday’s estimated $148 million).  In addition to the multiple domestic records I told you about yesterday, IMAX has now chimed in reporting a record setting domestic gross weekend at its IMAX theaters with a total of $4.8 million, as well as breaking the record for IMAX’s biggest single day in box office receipts worldwide $2.2 million.  Marking the biggest opening ever for an IMAX movie worldwide, the combined North America and International box office take for IMAX in the opening weekend was an estimated $6.3 million.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

At day one of NCTA in Las Vegas yesterday, PBS Kids Sprout unveiled plans to lunch The Let’s Go Show, its new daily three-hour interactive block, on Monday, June 25, 2007, 3-6p.  Designed to encourage preschoolers to be curious about their world, the block features wraparound segments hosted by Miles (a human adult) and a banjo-playing preschooler-like puppy (puppet) named Banjo.  Each day Miles and Banjo lead viewers on music adventures, where questions are posed and viewers are challenged to figure out answers themselves and/or by visiting SproutOnline.com for more information.  The Let’s Go Show line-up will include Sprout’s series such as Jim Henson’s The Hoobs, Angelina Ballerina and Bob the Builder.

Sci Fi channel will launch a new Ani-Monday, a weekly Anime programming block that will run Monday nights 11p-1a, from June 11, 2007.  The Ani-Monday block will feature a range of TV series, movies and shorts from Starz Media’s anime distribution division, Manga.  This late night block is aimed at young adults, but no doubt tweens/teens who are up will find it.

While Shrek the Third isn’t yet out, talk has turned to Shrek 4 and who will direct the project.  It seems that director Mike Mitchell is talking to the folks over at DreamWorks Animation to serve as director on the fourth installment of the Ogre tale, per Hollywood Reporter.  Mitchell’s movie directorial resume includes Sky High and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.  Shrek 4 already has a script and is slated for release in 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Starz Entertainment unveiled its new Summer of Stars campaign at NCTA.  The summer of Stars will feature first run movies and will highlight celebrities associated with those pictures each Friday on Starz, the pay TV network, at 9p for 15 consecutive weeks beginning Memorial Day Weekend, Friday, may 25, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and celebrity spotlights Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.  Other kid and or family friendly movies featured during the summer event include Shaggy Dog (6/22), RV (6/29) and Talladega Nights: The ballad of Ricky Bobby (7/13).

Anime Networks announced at NCTA that it has inked two new subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) carriage deals in North America adding a total of 500,000 new on-demand households.  The first deal is with Suddenlink Communications in West Virginia, the cable broadband operator will rollout Anime network’s 30-hour SVOD package to 200,000 households this month. Suddenlink plans to offer Anime Network’s SVOD package in new VOD markets launching later this year.  The second deal will see Canadian Cable Systems Alliance offering the network’s 30-hour SVOD package to 300,000 households.

Sesame Workshop has entered into a deal with Hola Entertainment to expand the distribution of its educational kid’s programming throughout Latin America.  Subsequent distribution pacts include: Ecuavisa (Ecuador) has completed an exclusive three year deal to air Plaza Sesamo (65×30′) and Elmo’s World (40×15′) on its terristrial station during the kids block; Corporacion Medcom Panama will serve as the exclusive broadcaster for Elmo’s World (50×15′) on its terrestrial station for three years.

MTV Tr3s will debut its nationwide search to find young Latino artists for the New Menudo in Road to Menudo starting on May 12 at 2p. Each of the 4×30 specials will feature the semi-finalists from auditions in LA, Miami, Dallas, and New York. Immediately following each episode, MTV Tr3s VJ Carlos Santos will host Road to Menudo: From La Calle to the Stage, a 30-minute special that showcases musical success stories from the Menudo audition cities such as Miami’s PitBull and Enrique Iglesias.  The network will air a 1-hour special in late July, Road to Menudo: The Finals, where the final members of the new Menudo will be revealed.  Mtvtr3s.com and MTV Tr3s Mobile will have extra features connected to the Menudo search.  This fall, MTV will air the 10-episode reality series (title TBD).  Once selected, Menudo will be part of the Epic Records family. The partnership between Epic and Menudo kicks off with the group’s “debut” album in December 2007.  Reveille is producing the MTV series in association with Road Games and Menudo.

Correction: In yesterday’s edition the line in the Spider-Man 3 story should have read this way: Spidey 3 opened in a record 4,252 theaters domestically, taking in an average of $34,807 per theater versus Pirates of the Caribbean 2 that opened in 4,133 with an average of $32,817 per theater.

Thomas & Friends has pulled into the station and picked up Toys “R” Us in a strategic marketing agreement for Thomas & Friends Live on Stage, the new touring stage show.  Throughout the partnership, the retailer will distribute marketing materials for the show’s US tour.  Additionally, in-store consumers will have an exclusive window on pre-sale tickets when they buy a Thomas & Friends product of $9.99 or more.  Thomas & Friends Live on Stage is produced by ThemeStar.

Building off the concept that communicating with your baby is important for bonding as well as crucial the child’s development, The Baby Brainy Company will introduce its New Baby IQ, a new DVD series from May 22, 2007.  Targeted to babies/toddlers 6 months  3 years old, the first four DVD titles are, The World Around Us, Baby’s First Word, Colors and Counting, each running 35 minutes and features puppet characters, Baby I and Baby Q.  The DVD titles were produced in association with the National Literacy Trust in England and feature music scores by the London Symphony Orchestra.  Additionally, the DVD titles are included on Virgin Atlantic Airways in-flight entertainment offerings.  CD soundtracks of each DVD title are also available.

STONE SOUP

Later this morning Food Network, Cox Communications and Share Our Strength, a group focused on ending childhood hunger in the US, will announce their multi-year charitable partnership.  Together the partners aim to bring the issues of starving American children to the forefront as well as outlining ways Food Network viewers and Share our Strength can help ensure that kids at risk for hunger have access to nutritious food.  The first effort under the partnership will be the Share Our Strength’s Great America Bake Sale, beginning May 19 through August 2007, during which people of hold local bake sales with proceeds going to hunger relief organizations nationwide.
