Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 7, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Fox Sports 1 has its first team in order for the channel’s upcoming launch, announcing that TSN staples Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole, who anchored TSN’s SportsCentre, will join the network as the primary highlight team for FOX Sports Live, the platform’s flagship news, opinion and highlights program. The show will air nightly at 11p and debut in conjunction with the network’s launch on Saturday, Aug.17.

On the Air

BTN announced its primetime slate for the 2013 college football season, with 12 games on deck, the most in network history. Overall, eight Big Ten schools will be featured in prime starting Thursday, August 29 at 7p with UNLV at Minnesota. Other highlights of the schedule include a pair of Nebraska and Northwestern games and well as one with reigning Big Ten Champion Wisconsin. Other key games include BTN’s first ever night game at Penn State, as well as Syracuse/Northwestern, and Missouri/Indiana. In total, BTN will televise 47 football games this fall.

The NBC Sports Group, NHL and NHL Original Productions are bringing back the popular all-access series NHL 36 tonight following the Western Conference Quarterfinals game between the Wild/Blackhawks on NBC Sports Network. The episode will mark the first time the series was dedicated to an entire team, the Chicago Blackhawks. NHL 36: Chicago Blackhawks will then re-air on NHL Network on Sunday, May 12, at 6p.

Meanwhile, the NHL announced another coupling for its outdoor 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, pitting the Ducks/Kings in a regular-season game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at7p. The event will be the first outdoor regular-season NHL game played in the U.S. west of the Mississippi River, the southern-most outdoor NHL game ever and the first-ever in California. NHL Network and NHL.com will cover the matchup live from Southern California leading up to and after the game.

Spike TV revealed talent for the inaugural season of the network’s upcoming series Fight Master: Bellator MMA, that will bring together 32 of the welterweight fighters on the planet to compete for a spot in the Bellator MMA Tournament. The series premieres on Wednesday, June 19 at 10p and will feature the likes of Randy Couture, Greg Jackson, Frank Shamrock, and Joe Warren as coaches and Jimmy Smith as host. The series will allow fighter to choose which camp to train with and which opponent they want to fight next.

The Mid-American Conference is reportedly not only mulling a media grant of rights, but is now expected to reopen negotiations with ESPN halfway into their eight-year broadcast deal, according to CBS Sports. Schools are looking to increase the dollars paid beyond the $1 million per year for the entire conference.

ESPN Films’ will bring back its SEC Storied series on May 15 at 8p on ESPNU with Abby Head On. The film chronicles Abby Wambach’s soccer career thus far, from winning a national title at Florida to her rise as a U.S. women’s national team star only four goals away from breaking Mia Hamm’s all-time international scoring record.

The NCAA announced a broadcast slate for its Division II teams on CBS Sports Network for the upcoming season with six games set for Thursday night starting Sept.5. The action kicks off on Sept. 5 with Winston-Salem St./UNC-Pembroke. Division II enters the eighth year of its partnership with CBS Sports Network in 2013.

ESPN’s coverage of the 16-team bracket for the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship Presented by Northwestern starts with first-round action Saturday, May 11, pitting Lehigh/North Carolina at noon on ESPN2. Sunday’s games with then open with Cornell/Maryland at 1p on ESPN2.

Continental Tire extended its relationship with Soccer United Marketing (SUM), Major League Soccer’s commercial arm, and will continue to serve an official partner and the official tire of MLS in the United States and Canada. Continental Tire will be the official tire of the MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup, Major League Soccer’s championship game. In addition, the company announced a new partnership with U.S. Soccer that will make the brand an official sponsor and the official tire of the U.S. Men’s, Women’s and Youth National Teams that runs through the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2016 Olympic Games and other games and tournaments.

A newest stunt from ESPN’s ongoing ‘It’s Not Crazy, It’s Sports’ brand campaign saw the network reward dedication during Sunday Night’s baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. At the game, the network delivered ballpark hot dogs to the kayakers outside of AT&T Park who were waiting for a home run ball. ESPN recruited professional kayaker London Van Der Kamp to paddle a floating branded boat out to the Cove to hand out free hot dogs to fellow kayakers throughout the game.

The WWE is launching a pair of awareness campaigns, announcing one dedicated to fight breast cancer and another to end bullying. On one, the company is teaming with Susan G. Komen for the campaign Make Mom Proud, to support the fight against breast cancer. The TV and digital campaign coincides with Mother’s Day and calls on supporters to do something meaningful for their moms and the other important women in their lives. The company is also partnering with Sean “Diddy” Combs in a PSA encouraging kids to stand up to bullying. The will run on WWE’s weekly TV programming and across all its digital platforms. Combs will serve as an ambassador for Be a STAR, the anti-bullying initiative co-founded by WWE and The Creative Coalition to encourage young people to treat each other with tolerance and respect.

The AND1 apparel and sneaker brand entered a partnership with IMG to create a new signature basketball tournament for this summer. AND1 has promoted the growth and development of street basketball for 20 years and will look to “highlight the finesse and mastery of the game of basketball. We’re looking forward to using this new concept as a signature element in the next step of our exciting story.”

Digital and Production

The Kiss Cam just got a whole lot more interesting; with PBR teaming up with rock band KISS for a new take on the popular stadium activity. Starting this weekend at the nationally televised Last Cowboy Standing event from Mandalay Bay, the organization will launch the 8-Second KISS Kam, a new twist on the long-standing tradition that will see, just like a successful bull ride, participants timed with a digital clock and must kiss for 8 seconds or face the ridicule of tens of thousands of PBR fans. Band members Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer, Eric Singer and Gene Simmons cheer fans on and provide constructive criticism via video during the promotion. Videos from the 8-second kissing couples will be recorded and posted online on the PBR site where visitors can vote for the best (or worst) kiss and register to prizes. In addition, PBR and KISS have teamed up to name six world-class bucking bulls after KISS albums; KISS Monster, KISS Destroyer, KISS Animalize, KISS Revenge, KISS Love Gun and KISS Psycho Circus.

ESPN’s X Games Foz do Iguacu the second international X Games event of 2013  offered a jolt to the newly redesigned XGames.com site. From April 7-27, the mobile Web and X Games app saw growth across the board in average daily unique visitors (up 83%), visits (up 249%) and page views (up 284%) compared to the previous international X Games event.
