Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
05.04.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 4, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Everybody loves a Top Ten List. They were around long before David Letterman, but credit him and his show for making them wildly popular. Even Time.com makes extensive use of Top Ten Lists, because readers love them. Top Ten Lists are short, precise, an easy read and hopefully informative.
So why not write your resume in a Top Ten format? Here is an example of a Top Ten resume using information provided by Cynopsis Media in their classified ad. Since this particular position does not directly effect the bottom line, I concentrated on fulfilling their specific needs.
Top Ten Reasons Why John Cox Should Work for Cynopsis Media.
10. I will create and distribute professional videos on a timely basis.
9. I will take ownership of all Public Relations announcements through Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networking sites.
8. I will produce insightful and thoughtful information on job hunting strategies.
7. I will provide the design and hard copy of any and all promotional materials.
6. I will prepare and execute intellectual and well reasoned reviews on a variety of television subjects as a bonus to Cynopsis readers.
5. I will write well researched and provocative articles on the Media, specializing in Television.
4. Expertise in several software programs that will provide Cynopsis Media with promotional videos, presentations, graphic and written materials.
3. Superb communication skills developed by fifteen years of award winning teaching.
2. Fifteen years experience of giving presentations from ten to 1,500 audience members.
1. I will research all available sources for current job availabilities in order to provide the readers of Cynopsis a one stop resource in job hunting.
Economic News
The CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index hit a twenty month high in April with a 92.3, it is the third consecutive month the job market has improved. With the exception of the Southwest, all areas of the country improved in April.
“Although there is still a certain amount of economic uncertainty, it seems as though the worst is over,” says Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast.com.
Next week: More Do’s and Don’ts.
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
What is the Boss Thinking? A Creative Manager’s POV Pt. 2
by Michael Pollock
It ‘s always helpful to know what the boss is thinking whether you are trying to advance within a company, or to get hired. I spoke recently to Aaron Harvey, Partner/COO of digital agency Purple, Rock, Scissors of FL and NY. Asked how he recruits creatives, Harvey told me that he doesn’ t advertise jobs he posts them on the company’ s website and they have some partnerships with select schools; but mostly the way they get new employees is by word of mouth. And he added: ” We are all music fans here when we are hiring we look at peoples iPod lists.”
When Harvey first came to Purple Rock Scissors, he told me: ” We were a revolving door. There is a challenge when you bring in young people to a smaller company. They get to do a lot more and get much more experience than in a larger company, so they are likely to be wearing more hats more quickly. If they talk to their friends at bigger shops they start to think ‘Hey, I am underpaid for what I am doing here.’ A lot of this comes down to the culture,” he says. ” There is a lot more that goes into the decision to stay with a firm than just money. The culture and the vision of the company are very important in the decisions made by creative employees.”
“The title thing is important to empower people: there s a level of achievement. We may want to give the best, most devoted developer a promotion though he may not be able to stand up in front of a client or have the ability to sell his work. So we try to groom people as much as possible. We include them in more and more client meetings first to watch and then gradually to participate until they can do it on their own.”
” The issue comes when the internal move isn’ t working and you bring someone new in. Then toes are stepped on. I may have promoted the designer to Creative Director, but they can’ t sell the work and can’ t manage a team. We learned to deal with this by being very specific in defining job specs, with the employee’ s help, so they know they are not just evaluated on their design but also on selling, and management and other factors. There is a formal evaluation process: we have them do self-evaluations and then see how they stacked up and on how they manage their time sheets.”

Is there “one” format for resumes or does anything work as long as its clear and easy to read?
Don’t get boxed in by a resume template you should format your resume to suit your situation. Your resume has to make the hirer see quickly that you are a match for their needs and want to meet you. Actually, in this competitive climate you have to be better than a match. The format should make this possible. In the words of a recruiter I spoke with: “The focus and thread through the experience needs to be clear and concise.”
The format you decide to use can depend on the type of role you seek and your level of experience. A junior level candidate would not have all the “key words experience” of a more senior candidate, but still needs to tell a compelling story of what they do offer. A technical producer or information architect would choose to focus on software and site technical skills, where a creative candidate would focus more on the types of projects, indicating their contribution and providing links to online samples. Marketers should get specific on areas of special expertise.
This content is what the resume is about first and foremost. The format you present in needs to be a quick easy-to-read communication that hits all the buttons appropriate to the position in question.
I have heard negative things about functional resumes. Is there a time where someone without anything to hide use a functional resume?
A recruiter told me: “I always question the functional resumes. I prefer to see those who are transparent and clear about what they’ve done and where they’ve done it. It may make sense for career transitioners, those who have minimal experience in their chosen field. In these cases, it’s important to take the necessary steps towards experience to get back on a career track displayed in a chronological resume format.”
So try and present a chronological story, but remember that with layout and careful writing and smart choices you can emphasize your functional skills and experience even within this format so that the overall impression is the one you want to give.

By Zig Gauthier
• DOMINATE. Hollywood is extremely competitive. In order to ultimately become a successful network executive, studio executive, writer, producer, director, manager or agent, your job is to dominate. To borrow from Vince Lombardi, strive for perfection and in striving for perfection you will achieve excellence. From the littlest details (stapling documents, making copies) through more substantive tasks such as evaluating scripts, doing development research, your job is to make an impression on your fellow associates that you are committed to excellence and this is reflected in your work performance.
• Please make sure that each and every email you send is proofed and written in a professional, well-articulated manner. Rather than “here it is” when you send an email or attachment, your email should be closer to, “As a follow up to our conversation, attached please find a talent overview summarizing my research and findings with regards to the Insiders project,” for example. Each and every professional email. Much of the initial and ongoing impressions you make with fellow employees AND your employer are based on your email communications.
• Take the initiative to dominate and make a good impression at the workplace every day. Ask your boss what you can do to help/work. Ask other employees what you can do. Ask for assignments. Clean up and organize. Dominate. Show everyone that you are a workhorse and that the quality of your work is always excellent. Be the intern or assistant that other people come to for projects. Learn to manage, delegate, follow up, report back in, etc. in regards to tasks, projects and communications with fellow employees.
• Do not publish people’s email address without their permission. Use the blind copy (bcc) function.
• Always respond to emails and phone calls within 24 hours. It is a sign of professionalism AND a sign that you are capable managing your professional life and personal life. Good managers thus make good employees.
• Please turn off all computers and organize your desk when you leave the office to reinforce the impression that you a) are organized and b) take pride in the office appearance. People who are organized project as better employees and therefore get promoted quicker. As with any office, any company, any internship, any job, etc., last person to leave should lock door, turn out lights, etc.
• Read a newspaper every day (USA Today, LA Times, etc.) so you can begin and continue to connect with the very consumers that you will be trying to reach with your television shows and feature films. If you don’t know what is current and topical, then you won’t know what is on their minds and affecting their lives. Also use the newspaper as a source for stories for television series and films. Further, newspapers and magazines are a quality source for learning names and cultures beyond your own.
• When dealing with your schedule at any place of employment (internships, production assistants, assistants), please remember that schedule changes are REQUESTS that you communicate to management ahead of time. Don’t tell your boss(es) when you will be out; request the time off. And please ensure you do so well ahead of your scheduled day.
• Please be conscious of the environment, energy waste, etc. And be diligent. This extends to shutting down the computer in front of you, organizing desk for 60 seconds before you leave, etc.
