In a new report, Nielsen says there were 199 television programs in primetime in the US during the 2008-2009 season, up from 191 programs the previous season. In the 2008-2009 season, dramas made up 40% of all programs; reality equaled 28% in primetime with comedies at 14%, though comedies were down from 16% in the 2007-2008 season.

TV One, currently available in more than 50.3 million households, introduces several new and returning series through fourth quarter this year. New TV One series includes:

  • Donald J. Trump Presents The Ultimate Merger – Donald Trump created this new series where business guru Omarosa will test a group of 12 handsome and successful bachelors to find her mate. Produced by Trump Productions LLC and Juma Entertainment and launching this June.

The series is produced for TV One by K2 Pictures and will premiere this July.
  • Unsung – Eight new episodes of this bio series returns celebrating the lives and careers of successful artists or groups who have gone largely under-appreciated. Lynn Redgrave
, part of the celebrated British family of actors, died at age 67 Sunday night in her Manhattan apartment. She had been treated for breast cancer in 2003. Lynn’s death comes a year after her niece, actress Natasha Richardson died from head injuries following a skiing accident and a month after the death of her older brother, actor Corin Redgrave. Lynn may not have eclipsed her older sister Vanessa Redgrave in fame, yet she sustained a remarkable acting career for nearly 50 years that included television, films and Broadway stage roles. Lynn received Oscar nominations for the 1966 film Georgy Girl and again for the 1998 movie Gods and Monsters. On television, Lynn was a co-star in the series House Calls from 1979-1981, the short-lived series Chicken Soup in 1989 and later Rude Awakening from 1998-2001 along with numerous made-for-TV movies, television series appearances and other notable theatrical films such as Shine in 1996 and The Jane Austen Book Club in 2007. Lynn also received Tony Award nominations for Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Shakespeare for My Father and The Constant Wife.

Helen Wagner, 91, a.k.a. Nancy Hughes on the CBS daytime drama As the World Turns died last Saturday. Helen played the mild-mannered Nancy Hughes character for more than fifty years and her character first opened the soap opera on April 2, 1956 with the words: “Good morning, dear.” Helen held the Guinness World Record for playing the same character on television for the longest time. Helen continued to remain on the cast list of As the World Turns although with a diminished presence on-air.  In December 2009, CBS said the soap was being canceled with its last episode scheduled to air this September.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Leading into the broadcast upfronts, NBC approved its first new drama for next season, Undercovers from J.J. Abrams. The drama’s pilot is co-written, produced and directed by Abrams and stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe as a married couple who become reactivated CIA agents after being retired for many years. The project is produced by Bonanza, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Previously, Abrams directed ABC’s Lost pilot in 2004.
