A first-ever 3D “sportumentary” series, Bullproof debuts this Thursday at 9p on 3net, the joint 24/7 3D network from Sony, Discovery and IMAX.  Bullproof is a one-hour weekly series chronicling a group of professional bullfighters who risk their lives to save cowboys competing in the Championship Bull Riding (CBR) circuit.  Wild Eyes Productions and Digital Revolution Studios produce the series.

This June, a new Animal Planet docu-series, Swamp Wars (wt) travels to Miami, a popular vacation destination and a breeding area for dangerous snakes and other reptiles.  In each episode of Swamp Wars, viewers meet Venom One the specially-trained team of fire fighters/paramedics with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, as they work against the clock to save people following attacks by reptiles or poisonous snakes.  The six-episode one-hour series debuts June 12 at 9p and is produced by 2CMedia, Inc. for Animal Planet.

Healthy lifestyle and wellness network, Veria TV tapped singer/songwriter Jewel to host the third season of The Incurables, the series documenting real-life people who have experienced debilitating diseases and have become advocates of natural, healthy lifestyles. Season three of The Incurables with 13 episodes will launch during late summer this year. 

Cable news organizations had to scurry to cover Sunday night’s breaking news involving the death of Osama bin Laden. From 10p to 3a, CNN led the coverage with 4.1 million total viewers and 2.1 million among A25-54; FOX News Channel was next with 2.8 million total viewers and nearly 1.3 million A25-54 viewers; while MSNBC was third with almost 1.6 million total viewers and 800,000 with A25-54.  President Obama presented a live announcement of the news during the 11p hour and CNN tallied 7.8 million total viewers/3.9 million A25-54; FOX News Channel with 4.8 million total viewers/2.1 million A25-54; and MSNBC with 2.3 million total viewers/1.1 million A25-54.

  • Silent Partner – One-hour drama about an ambulance-chasing lawyer and his paralegal forming a unique partnership where he is in Florida and she is in India.  Produced by Universal Cable Productions.
  • On We Go – Half-hour single-camera comedy starring Nathan Lane as a down-on-his- luck actor who feels he has been cursed because he resembles (even though he is not) Nathan Lane.  From Universal Cable Productions.
  • M. Deity – One-hour medical drama centered on a good doctor who heroically saved many lives following Hurricane Katrina though gets bogged down by hospital bureaucracy.  From Universal Cable Productions.
  • The Special – One-hour cop drama about an energetic and optimistic homicide detective with the LAPD who suffers from hypomania.  ABC Studios is producing.
  • Big in Japan – Half-hour comedy about the members of a popular boy band who are reuniting.  Kara DioGuardi is involved as a consulting producer along with Steven Finfer.  Universal Cable Productions is behind the project.
  • We the Jury – Half-hour single-camera comedy about a group of jurors sequestered during a high profile celebrity murder trial.  Marty Adelstein is producing with Fox 21. 
  • TGIM – Half-hour family comedy set in a suburban cul-de-sac where the parents are so frazzled by their children’s schedules they are happy when the work week begins.  Universal Cable Productions is producing.
  • The Enclave – Limited series about a family who is forced to move far from their hometown to take a new job opportunity.  From Fox Television Studios.
  • The Exceptions – One-hour drama centered on the socialite daughter of the Mayor of NYC who was jailed on bogus charges and uses her connections to solve cases that have slipped through the cracks.  Produced by Universal Cable Productions.
  • Hard Cover – One-hour drama about a middle-aged mom who becomes an undercover operative working with a rogue FBI agent.  Universal Cable Productions is producing.
  • Winslow – One-hour drama about Jimmy Winslow, a private detective who is also a recovering alcoholic, in debt, has a father in prison and an ex-girlfriend he is trying to win back.  Universal Cable Productions is behind the project.
  • House of Cards – Half-hour comedy about a college grad that is looking for love and a writing career at a greeting card company.  From Universal Cable Productions.
  • Regular Einstein – One-hour drama about the Duncans, a family comprised of three super-smart kids and one younger brother who is not exactly a genius but is a good cop and with help from his siblings might become a great detective.  Produced by Fox Television Studios.

USA Network serves up two new original series, Suits and Necessary Roughness this summer, and nine original series airing Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays and Sundays including In Plain Sight, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, White Collar, Covert Affairs, Burn Notice, Royal Pains, WWE Tough Enough.  Furthermore, USA Network officially renewed Fairly Legal for a sophomore season by ordering 13 episodes with production commencing this summer.  Fairly Legal will return to USA’s schedule in first quarter of 2012.

In addition, USA Network announced it will roll out a collection of short films falling under the network’s Character Project, an ongoing effort to showcase extraordinary Americans.  USA Network partnered with RSA Films and Ridley & Tony Scott and commissioned eight filmmakers to create short films focused on unique individuals.  The films will be available online through a digital hub at characterproject .usanetwork.com, as well as via FOD, iTunes, mobile platforms, syndicated widgets and social media.  The film titles and filmmakers include: Duck, a live-action narrative short by Jakob Daschek; Fish, a documentary by R.J. Cutler; Love Without Regret, an animated short by Tomas Pena/boolab; Monster Slayer, a combo live-action and animated short from Caskey Ebeling; Perfect, a live-action narrative by Amie Steir; The Dude, a documentary from Jeff Feuerzeig; The Fickle, a live-action narrative by Bryan Poyser; and Wyckoff Place, a documentary from Lauri Faggioni.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Judge Judy Sheindlin made a new multi-year pact with CBS Television Distribution to remain the star of her daytime syndicated court show, Judge Judy through 2015.  Judge Judy is currently in its 15th season and averages 10 million viewers.  The half-hour show is distributed by CBS Television Distribution. 

Effective immediately, Outdoor Channel is available on Charter systems in Texas including Fort Worth, Park Cities, Denton, Duncanville, Rockwall and Spring. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Hollywood-based animation production company, Bento Box Entertainment started production on a new animated comedy series for FOX and 20th Television titled Allen Gregory headlined by Jonah Hill who will also be a co-producer.  Bento Box, the company behind FOX’s newer animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers which was recently renewed, is teaming with Hill, Chernin Entertainment and executive producers David A. Goodman, Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel to produce Allen Gregory about a genius, though arrogant boy who is forced to attend elementary school with kids his own age.  Bento Box is further developing other animated pilots for FOX and other major studios. 

Steven Bochco is working on a new drama series for Showtime titled Church of Rock, reports Variety.  Details about the plot have not been revealed. The project is co-written by Bochco and Chris Gerolmo.

Apparently, Ryan Seacrest and his company, Ryan Seacrest Productions is in the early development phase on a new music competition reality show with NBC, cites EW.  The proposed show will not launch until at least 2012 though no concrete details are known other than it will feature self-contained episodes and will be an artist competition show and not a competition between contestants.

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS capped off a day filled with Royal Wedding coverage at #1 with a 1.7/6 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS’ special The Royal Wedding: Modern Majesty won at 1.8/7 with FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares next at 1.3/5.  CBS held sway through 9p with CSI: NY at 1.7/6 while ABC’s 20/20 and Univision’s Teresa tied for #2 at 1.6/5 each.  Univision flipped into first place at 10p with Triunfo del Amor at 1.8/6 and ABC’s 20/20 and CBS’ Blue Bloods each posted a 1.6/5 to share second place.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Former ESPN.com editor/columnist/blogger, Jason Sobel moved to Golf Channel and the NBC Sports Group as a Senior Writer. In his new role at GolfChannel.com, Jason will deliver columns, news stories and long-form features in addition to covering such events as PGA TOUR, LPGA Tour and other major gold championships.  Jason will also make appearances on Golf Channel’s linear news and talk shows.

Independent worldwide marketing and technology agency, LBi named David Rosenberg to the newly-minted role as Director/Innovation.  David begins his new position May 18 and will oversee LBi’s expansion in the areas of intellectual property, strategic partnerships and investment channels for the agency and its clients.  Based in New York, David will report to Judith Carr, President, LBi US. 

Effective immediately, Michael Finn joins BrightLine as President in charge of the company’s market and business development.  Michael has been VP/Media Sales for Dish Network since 2007.

GlassBOX Television Inc. hired Jennifer Mason as Marketing and Communications Director where she will spur awareness growth for the company’s media brands including Bite TV, AUX TV and the recently acquired Travel and Escape Channel.  Jennifer previously was Senior Manager/Marketing Strategy with Shaw Media’s Specialty Television.

VEVO added Doug McVehil as SVP/Music Programming, Talent and Content Operations and Scott Reich as VP/Original Content and Programming.  Doug, who joins from Sony Music Entertainment, will head VEVO’s worldwide music programming, talent, operations and industry relations, working in tandem with artists, labels, managers and content owners.  Doug will be based at the company’s New York City headquarters and reports to Fred Santarpia, GM.  Scott will manage VEVO’s original content and programming operations and will also be located in New York City and reports directly to Doug McVehil.

Jason Musante becomes Content Lead for Co Collective, effective immediately.  Jason will work with the company’s co-CEO, Ty Montague on innovations involving client business challenges.  Jason previously worked for BBDO, New York.

Young Broadcasting, LLC tagged Kenneth M. Freedman as GM of KWQC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Davenport, IA.  Kenneth has vast experience in broadcast sales and marketing and previously worked for other broadcast groups such as Belo, Fox News Corp., Meredith, Cox and Post-Newsweek. 

Starz, LLC elevated Dana Booton the newly-established position as GM/Head of Production for Film Roman.  Dana moves up from VP/Production at Film Roman where she recently was the executive in charge of the studio’s current Marvel Entertainment’s projects, Ultimate Spider-Man, The Super Hero Squad Show and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
