Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

05/24/11

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 31, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Control Part 2:  Partial Control

Too many people feel that they have no control going into an interview.  These people are at a tremendous disadvantage.  There are parts of the interview you can completely control, and other parts that you can be well prepared for, the second best thing other than control.

Most interviewers will ask if you have any questions.  This is when you not only have control, but a chance to impress with questions vital to the business and industry, rather than asking about vacation time.  This will take some research, but the bright side is, there is plenty material on the internet to read.  Today’s potential employee is expected to have greater knowledge of the company and the industry precisely because the information is more accessible than ever before.  Use this to your advantage.

This research will also help you to prepare for many of the questions the interviewer will throw at you.  If you sound more like a consultant than a person looking for a job, your chances improve dramatically.

Companies pay good money for experts to come in and consult on various issues.  If your knowledge of the company and industry is so great that you sound like a consultant, the interviewer is sure to take notice.  Many experts suggest this is the mind set you should have during any and all interviews: I am here to help, let me tell you how.

Your research shouldn’t be just the black and white information available, but also blogs where experts within the industry express their opinions.  Always look for alternate opinions concerning important industry and company issues.  This will provide you with a well rounded background and allow you to form your own opinions and insights to key concerns within a company.

Social media should also be a big part of your research.  Follow everyone who works at the company where you’re interviewing on Twitter.  Reach out to them on LinkedIn and Facebook.  The insights these people can provide are invaluable.  The drawback to social media is that making productive connections takes time and diplomacy.  If your interview is forthcoming, you can do more damage than good reaching out to someone on LinkedIn and asking questions without developing a relationship first.  So plan ahead.

Being unemployed really stinks, but it does afford you the time to prepare properly, so you can take as much control as possible.

No Control

You have no control over who the company is going to hire.  But if you’ve done all the prep work, such as:

  • Your resume and cover letter have gotten you interviews
  • You’ve reached out to people through social media in all the companies you have applied to
  • You’ve studied and done vast amounts of research on the companies and the industry as a whole
  • You’ve practiced your interviewing skills with mock interviews and taped them
  • You’ve studied these interview tapes and have worked hard to abolish any annoying habits or ticks you may have while interviewing
  • You’re confident with the mind set of a consultant during the interview
  • You’ve asked thought provoking questions
  • You’ll send a personal thank you note to the interviewer for their time

You’ve done all you can do.  Rest easy.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Giving Praise: The Secret to Motivating
by Diane Allen and Mary Kay Wedel

Everyone wants praises. It gives encouragement and spurs individuals to charge forward in whatever endeavors and challenges they are encountering.  Whenever you praise, whether at work or at home, you reinforce the behavior and make it much more likely to be repeated in the future.

In today’s competitive world, giving criticism happens more often than giving praise.  Criticism often requires immediate action to correct or improve something.  Praise is the opposite and  is essential to promoting higher performance.  Praise has a motivating effect on others; it also serves as an excellent skill builder for the individual or Manager giving the praise.

Dr. Peter Honey, the world famous behavior psychologist advises that to enhance learning and development, follow these  guidelines when giving praise:

  • Always give specific praise and avoid meaningless generalizations.  Start with what you observed, or heard from someone else, and then go on to spell out why you liked it.
  • Praise the better-than-expected results or actions.  For example, when people exceed their target, make an extra effort, or are punctual when they are usually late, etc.
  • Use ‘stand alone’ praise and do not dilute it with any criticism at the time you are giving the praise. The rule is: when praise is deserved, give it; when criticism is warranted, give it. But don’t mix the two. Don’t say: “You did a great job on the presentation, but you missed the deadline to submit your business plan.”  That will surely de-motivate the individual.
  • Always praise as close in time to when the person performed the action.  Praising someone a long time after the event is still worthwhile, but has less impact.
  • Praise authentically, not because you think you should, or only on special occasions, or to impress someone else.

Remember, praise is one of the most effective yet inexpensive ways to motivate people, and one of the best tools to help people learn.  Observe all that is going on around you. Find the good in it. Then give some praise to someone.  You’ll make their day and help them grow!

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Diane Allen and Mary Kay Wedel

I have been receiving phone calls from these companies that for $3k-$6K will work with you on a targeted job search using their methods, which they claim always work. Is there any value for that price that makes it worth the investment? What do they know that no one else does, if anything? Do they tend to excel only in certain areas/industries?

Let’s begin with the word “always” – which means every time. Seems like the company will target your search and provide you the name and maybe contacts at companies that match your interest- they will “always” provide that service.  It does not mean they are guaranteeing you will get a job?  Doing a target search takes time and research  it takes a good cover letter and resume to get an interview and a good interview to get a job.  So what are you buying? Someone else is doing the work for you.  Maybe it’s worth it  only you know for sure.

One thing that no one can do for you is networking. When you are seeking new employment, assure that you hone your networking skills because those efforts return the greatest chance of finding the job you really want.

I’ve read how important looks are during an interview, so I have the following questions:

  • Cuffs in my suit’s trousers?
  • French cuffed shirts?
  • Windsor knot or regular?
  • Any reason to buy the incredibly expensive ties when I can get silk ones for less than $30?
  • And, I’ve always heard never wear brown shoes with a blue suit, but recently I’ve seen so many people on TV and in real life do so, does this rule still apply?

We are not fashion experts but what we do know is that you must dress appropriately for an interview  first impressions count – research indicates that 55% of another person’s perception of you is based on how you look.   What you wear should be in line with the type of work you plan to do and err on the side of conservatism.  A quality dark suit and tie is appropriate for any corporate or management position. Based on your question, we’re assuming you are looking at a higher level job.  Dress professionally and dress your best, you need to decide what works for your budget and the job you want (it’s probably fine to wear the brown shoes with the blue suit; the hiring managers are probably not judging you on that color coordination).

Keep in mind, even if the dress is business casual at a company, it may not be the appropriate attire for the interview.
