Just before the holiday weekend began, the upfront advertising market started to move Thursday night as FOX made the first deals with several major agencies. Numerous reports indicate FOX secured price increases in the low double digits, with FOX particularly interested in lining up advertisers in its new fall reality competition show, The X Factor. FOX also negotiated to use digital inventory when programs are viewed on FOX.com and Hulu.com as make-goods when broadcast ratings come in less than guaranteed levels. Also late last week, reports suggest media agencies had presented budgets to many broadcast and cable networks though it was not know if additional deals were completed with other broadcasters. Some analysts are predicting this year’s upfront market to be on the strong side, with spending speculated at more than $9 billion.
Last Saturday at 10p, DIRECTV opened a new seven-episode run of the music series, Guitar Center Sessions presented with music instrument retailer Guitar Center. The series, airing in 2D hi-def on DIRECTV’s The 101 Network and in 3D on DIRECTV’s n3D powered by Panasonic, highlights exclusive performances and intimate interviews/conversations conducted by host Nic Harcourt. Filmed live in front of a studio audience at the Guitar Center Hollywood Vintage Room, future episodes of Guitar Center Sessions will showcase Peter Frampton, Bad Religion, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Saint Motel, Social Distortion and Blondie.
Actor Jeff Conaway, 60, best known for his role on classic TV series Taxi and for playing the rebellious Kenickie in the mega-hit 1978 movie musical Grease, died last Friday. Mr. Conaway appeared on the hit TV series Taxi, playing struggling vain actor Bobby Wheeler from 1978 to 1981; he left the show for its last two seasons. Following Taxi, Mr. Conway appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful in 1989 and Babylon 5 in the 1990s. For his fans, confirmation of his long fight with addiction to alcohol, cocaine and painkillers became apparent when he appeared in two seasons of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab series as one of Dr. Drew Pinsky’s most heartbreaking and difficult cases. In 1980, Mr. Conaway married Olivia Newton-John’s sister, Rona and they had a son named Emerson. The couple divorced in 1985.

HBO made an exclusive output deal with Summit Entertainment to release the studio’s roster of films arriving in theaters starting January 2013 through the end of 2017. This agreement makes Summit the only mini-major studio to hold an exclusive output bargain with HBO. Summit’s films expected to be seen on HBO include the adventure Highlander, Ender’s Game based on the novel by Orson Scott Card and the epic 3D movie Pompeii.
CBS’ procedural Criminal Minds is keeping Paget Brewster for next season though newer series regular Rachel Nichols is off the show. As previously announced, A.J. Cook is returning to Criminal Minds and Kirsten Vangsness is staying which meant there wasn’t room for Nichols’ character, Ashley Seaver in the plot. Co-star Thomas Gibson has not yet reached a deal for next season and his negotiations are ongoing.
Shaw Media’s Slice network in Canada tapped comedian/actress Caroline Rhea (The Caroline Rhea Show, Sabrina, The Teenage Witch) to host the new cake design competition series, Cake Walk: Wedding Cake Edition. The 13-episode, one-hour original series from Buck Productions is in production now in Toronto and will premiere this fall on Slice.
