CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/31/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, May 31, 2005 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Welcome back from your long weekend.  Have a good weekend? Do anything fun?

You know it’s a quiet morning when this is the lead story:

Joan of Arcadia fans are not taking the cancellation of the CBS show lying down.  It used to be a fan group would write letters or sign petitions.  In this day and age, they send e-mails launch a website:  www.savejoanofarcadia.com. The response from CBS spokesman Chris Ender on behalf of the network:  “It was one of the toughest programming decisions we have had to make in the last couple of years because qualitatively, everyone here loved the show and was proud of the show.” All that is well and good, but the fans don’t plan on letting up, particularly since they’ve learned the cast in under contract until mid June.  Joan of Arcadia aired for two seasons -the first year it averaged a little better than 10 million viewers; this season that dwindled to 8 million. And the other factor for CBS – the median age of Joan of Arcadia viewers is 53.9, older than even the average CBS viewer (which is around 51).

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Touchstone TV has signed the standard 2-year, 7-figure development deal with David Walpert who will develop new series for the studio.  Additionally, according to Hollywood Reporter, Walpert will join the midseason comedy series Crumbs as Exec Prod, airing on ABC.

The original cast of the film The Breakfast Club will be reunited on MTV’s 2005 Movie Awards, airing June 9.  Already confirmed to appear are Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall and the only one left to confirm is Emilio Estevez.

Eddie Albert, age 99, died on Friday.  Albert’s first role was on television in The Ford Theatre Hour’s Joy to the World (November 11, 1948). He also hosted his own series, The Eddie Albert Show in 1953.  His first film was in 1938, Brother Rat which also starred Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman.  To many, Albert’s most memorable role was that of Oliver Wendell Douglas, wife of the love Lisa Douglas, on Green Acres.  The show ran on CBS from 1965 to 1971 and has been airing in syndication ever since. Other films of note with Albert are Roman Holiday, The Heartbreak Kid (for both he was nominated for an Oscar) Oklahoma, and The Longest Day with Richard Burton, Sean Connery and Red Buttons. He also played the Prison Warden in the original film The Longest Yard in 1974 opposite Burt Reynolds, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.  Other TV credits include Switch with Robert Wagner, Falcon Crest and most recently as Herbert Gower in The Barefoot Executive (1995).  He also voiced Vulture/Adrian Toomes in the TV animated series Spider-Man.

Note — Local People Meters kick off in Washington DC and in Philadelphia on Thursday, June 2.
