Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

05.25.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 25, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Memo to all employees from Your Boss

First I want to thank you all for working so hard during these past 18 months.  We lost a lot of good people due to cutbacks, but we kept the best.  I want you all to know how much I appreciate all the sacrifices you have made on behalf of the company.

I know that plenty of you are thinking about pay increases for your efforts. You deserve them, and I hope to give them to you. But not today. Not tomorrow. Not for a while.

Yes we have started to hire new people, and while our situation has improved, we are still a long way from being the company we were two years ago.  Until the company has created a stronger financial foundation, I cannot justify giving anyone, including myself, a higher salary.

When the company is in a more comfortable financial situation, and the time is right, please take the time to prepare the reasons why you should receive an increase in salary.

My suggestions on what to do:

Read our policies on salary increases in the handbook.  It will give you a good foundation about our practices and on how to proceed.

  • Do your research on competitive salaries for your position.  I’ve done mine.
  • Write down your accomplishments as you make them, note how they helped the company.  When we meet, give me a written copy and quickly summarize your successes and their benefit to the company.
  • Don’t be nervous about asking, it’s what I expect.
  • I cannot give everyone a salary increase, be open to other perks, such as flex time and additional personal days.
  • Make an appointment with my secretary and tell him what the meeting is about.  Don’t ask me about a raise in the hallways, I don’t like to be blindsided.
  • Ask for a performance review, it’s a good way for us to talk about your past, present and future.
  • I don’t like to say no, but sometimes I will.  If I say no to you, thank me for my time and consideration.  Professional behavior goes a long way.
  • If I say no, ask for suggestions about your performance so that the next time you ask, your chances of getting a raise will increase.
  • If I say no, wait at least six months before you ask again.

My suggestions on what NOT to do:

  • The first rule of negotiations, if you get personal, you’ve already lost.  If you get personal with me, you will not get your raise and may lose your job.
  • If you approach me with an offer from another company, be ready to take it.  If I think you are receiving fair compensation for your performance, the threat of leaving will not help your case.
  • No one is entitled to a raise, if you didn’t earn it, you’re not getting it.
  • If you threaten to quit if you don’t receive the raise, goodbye.  I will not be held hostage nor will I tolerate any employee who demonstrates such unprofessional behavior.
  • Don’t tell me why you need the money, everybody needs more money.  Concentrate on what you have done for the company, not what the company can do for you.
  • Do not compare yourself to another employee.  I cannot and will not discuss the differences between employees.
  • If you come to our meeting with a PowerPoint presentation as to why you deserve a raise, I will punch you in the throat.  Just kidding.  I will only feel like punching you in the throat.
  • “Because I had to worked harder during the recession.”  So did the person next to you, the person next to her, and so did I.  We went through a crisis, I had to let people go, you kept your job.  I’m grateful for all the work everyone did, but the company did not increase its profits during this time, we simply survived.

Be prepared, be candid and be professional, it’s the best way to get your raise.

Next week: The economy is coming back and you have a job, now is the time to network.

We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
UGLY BETTY;
Using Blogging To Connect With People By Being Yourself
by Jessica Sitomer

Betty Suarez, wanted to write magazine articles that would change the world. Her job at fashion magazine, MODE, made her feel like she wasn’t “living up to her potential.”

Ever feel like that? Your career isn’t exactly where you want it to be, you’re not expressing yourself creatively, you’re comparing yourself to others whom you feel are more successful than you?

If your answer is yes, then I hope you’ll be as motivated as Betty to take matters into her own hands. Betty decided to empower herself, by having her voice heard through blogging.

Betty didn’t just write articles, she wrote about her life in her voice. Slowly she got a following, won a blog award, and it eventually led to her being offered a dream job in London.

This exercise isn’t about being a professional writer. And it’s not about being perfect. It’s about sharing your career and your personal life (using a hook) so that people can get to know you. Because when people know you, that’s when they want to HIRE YOU!

Here’s the simple formula:

1.      Decide for what job you want to market yourself

2.      Decide your hook, something that makes you interesting to a specific group of people: Surfing Senior VP, Cooking Creative Exec, Daddy Director of Marketing.

3.      Create Value by making a list of topics to give you the confidence that you’ll have stuff to write about. Make the “stuff” valuable. Value can be: answers to questions, solutions to problems, making people laugh.

4.      Decide how often you’re going to blog

5.      Let go of limiting beliefs like, “I’m not a writer” or “It’s not ready because it has to be perfect” or “I’m not good with computers.” (It’s about the value you’re giving and the relationships you’re creating- NOT about getting spelling and grammar awards).

Go to blogger.com or wordpress.com and see how easy it is to start a blog FOR FREE! This is the information age. People are connecting online. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to market yourself in a personal way!

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by  Jessica Sitomer

I have been out of work for over 18 months. When I get a job, currently interviewing, am I going to get low balled when in comes to salary because they might (correctly) infer that I am desperate? I’ve thought about using a functional resume, but everyone says it does more harm than good. Other than being confident during interviews, is there any way I can avoid the low end of the salary scale?

Two things to address in the short space, here. The first, do your research. Speak to associates who’ve been hired or have been doing the hiring in the last 6 months so you can have an idea of what salaries have been offered and accepted. If you have no personal friends who can help, go on Facebook and ask your “Friends” if they can privately email you their experience with salary and advise you what to ask for, based on your experience and past salary. There’s no way to know if they will low ball you, but they may try. Be sure they know what you were making at your last job (since it sounds like it was on the high end). Then, when actually negotiating for salary, you always want the other person to put a dollar amount on the table first. Look through the Cynopsis Advantage archives. I’m pretty sure I recall reading some articles on negotiating tactics.

The second and BIG issue, is your desperation. You can’t mask desperation with confidence. It is too transparent. Subtle, because the interviewer may not fully know what it is that he liked about someone else better than you, but what it is, is that your desperation will seep through in your language, your tonality, and most revealing and hardest to control, your physiology. That said, you can change your desperate feelings before going into an interview. Have you ever had a dream where you were being chased and you woke up in a sweat with your heart racing? That’s your unconscious at work. It doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined. It just knows what you’re thinking, SO, you have to think of a time/scenario where you felt completely confident, or imagine something that would make you feel completely confident, and allow those feelings into all of your senses. Really allow your body to feel the feelings of being totally confident. You may even have a song that gets you feeling great, like “Eye of the Tiger,” (which used to work for me, but may have perhaps been compromised by the hysterical ukulele version on Modern Family). You want to be thinking about THAT scenario, listening to THAT song, or both, before walking into that interview. And be the confident person who you are.

Do bosses assume that when I request for a performance review, that I am really asking for a raise?

Are you? If you are, then they probably have a good idea because it will reflect in the way you ask. If you’re not, you will most likely tell them why you want the performance review, in which case they won’t assume you’re asking for a raise. So, I’m not really clear why you’re asking this question. If it’s because you want a raise, and a performance review will reflect that you deserve one, then what does it matter if they know? If you feel that asking for a raise will somehow put your job in jeopardy but you still want a performance review on file for the future when it’s a better time to ask, then make it clear when asking that you’re not asking for a raise, simply a performance review. Anything they choose to assume after that is out of your control.

Interview/Job Search Process  (part 4)
By Zig Gauthier

•        DOMINATE.

•       Research executive and company (programming, production and development OR acts and labels; which shows are in development, production, on the air, etc.).

•       Arrival time for interview should be 15-30 minutes before scheduled appointment time, especially at a studio.

•       Work for larger, high profile companies early in your career.

•       You should arrive to the interview with three copies of your resume on resume paper and three copies of your professional references on resume paper, enclosed in a leather binder/portfolio. At the very beginning of the interview, you should hand a copy of each of your resume and references to the interviewer, even if they already have a print out in their hands. Why? Because is sets the tone that you are a bad mamma jamma and they need to seriously consider your candidacy.

•       Shake hands firmly and professionally.

•       Bring a pad, pen, and leather portfolio to ALL meetings, not just interviews.

•       Wear appropriate business attire to all interviews and meetings. When in doubt, overdress. Countless people have not received job offers for under-dressing, but very few have not received job offers for overdressing.

•       Keep your answers short, polished, well articulated and professional. Smile, be confident, be engaged and be aware. The best way to do this is to make a list of the 15 questions you have a high chance of being asked (why do you want to work here, what is your long term career goal, strengths, weaknesses, tell me about your experience at ____, etc.). Practice answering questions ahead of time.

•       Do not ask too many questions. When an interviewer asks if the interviewee has any questions, it is a loaded question. Most questions should have clear answers pre-interview. It is not an opportunity to “ask away” or this will reinforce that you are too junior, green or inexperienced for the open position. Perhaps a simple question about the timeline by which the hiring decision is being made, but not much more. Again, an experienced, prepared candidate simply should not have too many questions. The goal is not to get questions answered, but rather prove that you are the number one candidate for the job out of hundreds of resumes received.

•       Be positive. Do not say anything negative about past companies, colleagues, bosses, employees, etc. Companies do not want to employ cancerous individuals.

•       Send a follow up email thank you to the assistant and the executive within 24 hours. Again, this should be concise, professional and personalized. Hand written cards are good, but often times by the time the card is received via mail 3-4 days later, the decision has long been made.

•       Turn off your cell phone.

•       Respond to emails and phone calls within 24 hours.

•       No cologne or perfume.

•       All of the above every time.
