Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 24, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

There are so few things we have control over while searching for a job, make sure you make the most of it.

Total Control

Your resume and cover letter.  No one else makes the decisions about these two, it’s all up to you.  If you are not getting interviews, you are either looking for a job you are not qualified for, or, more likely, your resume or cover letter aren’t very good.

Many readers have sent me their resume, and though I cannot offer any individual help, I am struck by how poorly many of the resumes are organized.  One resume opened with a summary that contain over twenty statements.  Though some of the statements were impressive, they were hidden by the other seventeen that shouldn’t have been included.

Try to make your resume very skimmable, what are the three most important facts you want the recipient to read, and how quickly and easily can they find them.

Your cover letter should convey four items.  The position you’re applying for, why the company should hire you, (the more quantifiable you make this the better), you are available for an interview at their convenience and what makes you different than the other applicants.  It should be concise, a half a page is great.

Every time I write something that someone else is going to read, I highlight it and have my computer read it back to me.  I often pick up mistakes that I wouldn’t have otherwise.  Even with this, I still make mistakes, as Cynopsis readers so gleefully point out.  But never underestimate another pair of eyes reading your resume and cover letter.  Ask them what jumps out when they read your resume, is it easy to read, is the cover letter concise or too wordy.  All of this is extremely valuable information.

Still no interviews, take control again and pony up the money to take them to a professional.  Some of them can be expensive, but nothing is more expensive than being unemployed.

You also have total control over what you wear to the interview.  Make sure it is appropriate to the culture of the company.  When I interviewed at Apple, business casual was more inline than a business suit.  When in doubt though, wear a conservative suit, white or light blue shirt/blouse, and fairly conservative and limited adornments.

Parks and Recreation: Ask For help Without Being A Pest

Leslie Knope is consistently working on projects to make her city of Pawnee, Indiana, a better place. In order to get things done, Leslie must constantly ask for help, and she won’t take “Knope” for an answer. Yet, Leslie never seems like a pest because she has such pure intentions and is working for the greater good. Because of her passion for Pawnee, she has no fear around asking for what she wants and needs.  

Do you have obstacles around asking people for help? If so, you’re not alone. I’ve worked with hundreds of people who resist my coaching to ask others for help. The reasons range from: “I don’t want anyone to know I need help” and “I don’t want to bother them” to “Why would they want to help me?” and “People don’t want to help.”

Let me explain what these “reasons” are in no uncertain terms: Career Sabotage! Everyone in every profession needs help to get to the next level. The most successful CEOs need the help of employees at different levels to fulfill their customers’ needs. So what makes ‘you’ the one person who no one wants to help, should know-it-all, and be able to do it all by yourself? Can you see how ridiculous that is now that you’re reading it in print? If you’re not where you want to be in your career you need help! And guess what? Everyone you’re afraid to ask for help needs help too, and has asked for it numerous times in his or her career.

If I could put it on a bumper sticker it would read, “Asking for Help… Everybody’s doing it!”

Answer these questions for yourself:

1.Do you want to know what successful people who do what you do did to achieve their success?
2.Do you want to ask successful friends in the industry for help with an introduction to someone, a set visit, or recommendation for a job?
3.Do you want to ask your contacts for work when you are so close to reaching your hours for benefits?
4.Do you want to ask business associates for help getting into industry parties, social events, or charity events?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, it is absolutely possible to do without looking like an amateur, being a pest, or threatening an important relationship. Here are some tips:

1.Get clear on the help you want.
2.Ask yourself, “Is this something this person can say yes to?” Put yourself in his or her shoes to answer this honestly. They may not be able to say yes to work, but they may be able to bring you on the set and introduce you to people.
3.Once you have a request (that’s the business term for asking for help), write it down in a business-like fashion. The key to avoid being a pest, seeming amateurish, or threatening a relationship, is to be crystal clear that this is a business request and they can say, yes, no, or give you a counter offer.
4.Determine what you have to offer in return. As I wrote earlier, they need help too. Can you connect them with someone? Can you recommend them on LinkedIn? Can you offer to work for free on a project for them?
5.NOW, it’s time to ask! You can do it in person, by phone, by email, or any other way you see fit. You may want to practice out loud if you’ll be speaking to the person. You may want to get feedback on your email if you’re going to be writing to the person.
6.Once the person says yes and gives you the help you want, be sure to show your appreciation.

Remember, Leslie has no ego. She truly cares about her cause and it shows, which is why people help her. Asking for help is a professional necessity. You have to ask to make it happen for yourself.

Are Internet career sites like Monster becoming outdated? Were they ever an effective way to get a job?

The most effective way IS and always has been, through referral. Career sites have been effective for enough people that they still exist, but the bottom line is the best way to get a job is through your contacts.

I suggest you make a list of at least 10 companies you’d be interested in working for. Once you have your list, reach out to all of your contacts and ask them if they know anyone working at those companies. LinkedIn is a good resource for this as well. Department does not matter.

You want to create a relationship with anyone in the company because you must get a foot in the door. Once you have a foot in the door, that person can introduce you to people in the department you’re interested in. Your objective at this point, is not to ask for work, but to let them know that theirs is a company you’d like to learn more about on a personal level; what they like most about working there, about the people, about the accomplishments of the department, etc.

Then, down the line, when a job opens there, you’re an insider. The ideal scenario is that you have people who are keeping you in mind and will throw your name in the hat before the job is even made public.

What is the best way to approach someone on LinkedIn that works at a company that I would love to work at? Do I just flat out tell them my story, Hi I want to be hired at your company sometime in the near future and looking to get some insight? Or is there a more diplomatic way and is the more diplomatic way a much more time consuming strategy?

Funny you should ask, I was alluding to this in my previous answer. I would start out by connecting with them through a mutual contact and using the mutual contact as your reason for reaching out. If you don’t have a mutual contact, let them know that you have great respect for their company and look forward to “following their activity”. Now you’re showing an interest in them personally, which is flattering.

When you see posts that apply to their company, make positive comments. Send sincere congratulatory messages when appropriate. Your story of “wanting to be hired at their company” is the same story everyone is telling them.

Is there a more diplomatic way? Yes, creating a relationship. Is it more time consuming? Absolutely! Are you in the top 10% of people who are willing to do what it takes to go the extra mile and get the job? You tell me.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Johnathan Rodgers, President at TV One announced he is retiring July 31, 2011.  Johnathan’s career in the media industry spans 45 years and he has been with cable network TV One for seven years. 

GolTV increased its sales team in Los Angeles by hiring Tyler Verdery as AE. Tyler will focus on ad sales on the West Coast and report to Ivan Perez, VP/Network Advertising Sales based in Miami.

Angela Cannon elevated to Senior Director/Affiliate Marketing at GMC, up from Director/Affiliate Marketing.  Angela reports to Wendy McCoy, VP/Marketing.

Carlos Gutierrez appointed to the newly-minted role as VP/Business Affairs and Legal at 3net, the 24/7 3D network from Sony, Discovery and IMAX.  Carlos begins his new position June 1 and he will be located at the network’s corporate headquarters on the Sony Pictures Studios lot in Culver City, CA. 

Cameron Clayton takes on the new role as EVP/Digital Products for The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) where he will supervise the company’s digital product development initiatives and strategies.  Based at TWCC’s Atlanta offices, Cameron reports to Mike Kelly, President/CEO.  Cameron has been with TWCC since 2004 and before this appointment served as SVP/Product.

Univision Communications Inc. tapped Chris Fager as SVP/Distribution Sales for Univision Communications, becoming a part of the Distribution Sales and Marketing team from TuTV networks where he was president over the past five years.  Univision purchased the TuTV networks last December which are now included with the company’s Pay TV roster.  Based in Los Angeles, Chris reports to Tonia O’Connor, President/Distribution Sales and Marketing.  Jessica Rodriguez, SVP/Cable Networks will now oversee the TuTV networks.

Olivia Dupuis upped to VP/Public Relations at AMC where she most recently was a Director in the public relations department.  Olivia has supervised launch and tune-in campaigns for the network’s original series including Mad Men seasons two and three, Breaking Bad seasons two and three and season one of The Walking Dead as well as the network’s most recent original scripted series, The Killing.  Now, Olivia’s scope of duties will include PR campaigns for AMC’s programming, overseeing the network’s awards campaigns and the overall PR strategy for the networks.  Olivia reports to Marnie Black, SVP/Public Relations, AMC.

Emilie Pasquet rejoins BRB Internacional as Head/Sales to manage the company’s Audiovisual Distribution functions.

Weigel Broadcasting Co. relayed executive leadership changes including the promotion of Neal F. Sabin to President/Content and Networks up from EVP.  Neal’s appointment is effective immediately and he reports directly to Norman H. Shapiro, President.  Additionally, John R. Hendricks joins the company as EVP/Sales beginning on or around June 1.  John will head all sales personnel and sales operations.  Thirdly, Weigel Broadcasting Co. added Robert J. Ramsey as VP/GM of WCIU-TV in Chicago beginning on or close to June 1.  Robert will have oversight on Weigel’s four Chicago low powered stations and the company’s South Bend properties.  Well done Neal and John — Bob, good to have you back in the mix!  Congratulations gentlemen!!

Jean Dietze boosted to EVP/Affiliate Relations with NBC where she will continue to manage all facets of affiliate relations.  Jean is based in New York and reports to Ted Harbert, Chairman, NBC Broadcasting.

Effective immediately, Sam Feist elevated to Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief/SVP with CNN up from Political Director and VP of Washington-based programming.  In his new role, Sam will supervise daily operations for the Washington bureau and head all newsgathering and programming efforts.  Sam reports to Ken Jautz, EVP of CNN/US.

Telemundo 52-KVEA tapped Mexican journalist Jessica Carrillo to Co-Host and serve as Producer for the entertainment show Acceso Total.  Jessica begins her new job this week, joining host Victor Cordero.  Acceso Total airs live Monday-Friday at 1130a. 

Premier Retail Networks, Inc. (PRN) upped Jon Landa to SVP/Sales for the company’s West and Central territories.  Jon has been with PRN since 2007 as VP/Sales working with direct clients and agencies on the West Coast.

Gregg Brussel promoted to VP/Research Channels and Ad Sales, effective immediately, with BBC Worldwide Americas where he manages research and analysis for BBC America, BBC.com and Ad Sales.

Christian Murphy bumped to SVP/International Programming and Marketing for A+E Networks.  Christian oversees the international program roster, production, brand strategy and marketing for the company’s international division which operates 46 channels in 150 markets and 30 languages.  Christian reports to Sean Cohan, SVP/International, A+E Networks.

Jennifer Lawlor hired as SVP/Strategy and Planning, Consumer Products with Zodiak Media Group.  Jennifer will manage the worldwide launch of such brands as Waybuloo, Tic Toc House for Nickelodeon US and Mister Maker, the CBeebies Arts and Craft show. Jennifer will also be involved in consumer product commissions, co-productions and acquisitions from Zodiak Rights and Zodiak Kids. Jennifer previously worked for MTV/Nickelodeon Consumer Products as VP/Emerging Marketing and Business Development, EMEA (London).

Annie House joins The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) as Senior Director/Strategic Marketing, where she will work in tandem with the consumer marketing team to create the distribution marketing plan and long-term strategy to customize marketing and communications activities with distributors.  Annie previously worked at Discovery Communications and now at TWCC she will be based at the company headquarters in Atlanta.

AMC named Marc Krok as SVP/AMC TV Ad Sales to supervise advertising sales for the network in the New York region.  Marc will report to Scott Collins, EVP/AMC and WE tv Ad Sales. Marc will develop sales strategies and revenue goals as well as sales reporting.  He will also be the main contact on behalf of AMC to buyers, planners and clients based in the Tri-State area.

Former CEO at TNS Media, Dean DeBiase appointed Chairman/CEO of Entertainment Promotions, a company specializing in helping brands, businesses and institutions target consumers via discounts and promotions delivered through print, online and mobile platforms.

Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) tapped John Patroulis as CCO of BBH New York.  Most recently, John co-founded the agency, agencytwofifteen where he was Co-Executive Creative Director and Partner.

Effective immediately, Josh Forstot takes on the new position as Associate Creative Director/Digital Creative Technologist at NYCA based in Solana Beach, CA.  Josh will serve as the full-service branding and advertising agency’s digital creative supervisor where he reports to Dave Huerta, VP/Associate Creative Director.

Here Media Inc. employed two new sales associates: Joel Shoemaker hired as Advertising Director for Here Media’s New York office and Leor Mendel is the new Advertising Account Manager in the company’s Los Angeles office.  

Starting June 6, Chris Licht switches to CBS News as VP/Programming to supervise programming and development for CBS News broadcasts and platforms. Chris is the co-creator and original executive producer of MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Leopard Films and Remedy Productions are coming together and establishing a new independent creative entity called Argonon, involved in all genres of programming production in the UK and international markets for broadcast and digital platforms.  Argonon is comprised of Leopard Films, the drama unit Leopardrama and Leopard Films USA as well as Remedy Productions and Remedy Productions Canada.

  • James Burstall, CEO of Leopard Films takes on the role as CEO of Argonon and Stuart Mullin was named Argonon’s CFO
  • Remedy Production’s Toby Dormer and Juliet Borges will also be part of Argonon’s Board while Susie Field was elevated to GM of Argonon Group
  • Furthermore, Todd Austin, CCO of Leopard Films will now manage daily operations of Leopard Films in the UK.  Charlie Bunce joins Leopard Films as Head/Features and Formats and recently Fiona Morris joined Leopard Films as Head/Arts and Performance
  • Leopard Films USA added Nick Rigg as President; Julian Locke upped to VP and Sara Banister hired as COO.

Universal Communications Inc. promoted Kevin Cuddihy as President/Univision Television Group (UTG), up from EVP/Advertising Sales for UTG.  In his new position, Kevin will manage all UTG operations encompassing advertising sales and local programming.  He will continue to be based in New York and reports to Peter Walker, President, Univision Local Media.

Carol Fiorino joins Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness, specializing in marketing consumer wellness brands, as Creative Director.  Carol will co-lead the department and responsibilities with Stuart Fink, Creative Director and both report to Helayne Spivak, CCO.
