CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM AMC

Showtime see-sawed with renewal news yesterday as the premium network canceled United States of Tara starring Toni Collette after the third season concludes this summer. Despite Collette winning an Emmy in 2009 and a Golden Globe in 2010 for her role as a mom who suffers from multiple personalities, viewership for the comedy has decreased over its run. For the current third season premiere 411,000 total viewers tuned in compared to the second season launch with an average of 816,000 total viewers. On the flipside, Showtime renewed its dark comedy Nurse Jackie for a fourth season headlined by Edie Falco. The third season of Nurse Jackie is presently averaging 2.8 million viewers each week.
A new weekly docu-series is on the docket for MTV called Caged about a group of recent high school grads struggling to break out of life in small-town America. The young people, growing up in Louisiana, turn to amateur MMA fighting as a way to gain pride and recognition in their world. Caged is from MTV’s News and Docs department and is executive produced by Joke Fincioen and Biagio Messina of Joke Productions; Dave Sirulnick and Amy Bailey are executive producers for the network.
MTV also approved a second season of World of Jenks from documentary filmmaker Andrew Jenks. The new season of World of Jenks will see its episodes expanded to a full hour and a new approach for the storytelling focused on the journeys of three young people and their experiences over a six-month period. Jenks serves as executive producer of the series; Dave Snyder was co-executive producer this season. Brent Haynes and Brooke Posch are executive producers for MTV.
The Borgias on Showtime ended its first season Sunday at 10p by tallying 810,000 viewers though for the night clocked in at 1.12 million total viewers. The Borgias was recently renewed for a second season with 10 new episodes slated to commence production this summer for a 2012 premiere.
Also on Sunday, the fifth season finale of Nuestra Belleza Latina (Our Latin Beauty) on Univision resulted in the best-ever season conclusion in the history of the show. The final episode reached 8.4 million total viewers that tuned in to all or part of the two-hour grand finale. The two-hour telecast captured 4.9 million total viewers and averaged 2.5 million A18-49 viewers as well as 1.4 million among A18-34.
Fresh off its blockbuster debut last weekend, ABC Family picked up the rights to air the Walt Disney Pictures release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides from Disney-ABC Domestic Television. Telco Productions, Inc. is teaming with national pollster Scott Rasmussen and the electronic media company, Rasmussen Reports to create news programming for syndication. The duo will produce polling analysis vignettes that are one-minute in length targeting local newscasts. The polling topics covered will include current political, business and lifestyle issues.
North American digital media services company, Avail-TVN added Relativity Media to its portfolio of television and studio content provider partners. Avail-TVN gained the rights to license and distribute Relativity Media’s new release and library movies on VOD and Pay-Per-View across multi-platforms as well as hotels. Relativity Media’s recent films include Limitless, The Fighter and the future Immortals.
Spike TV approved a new original unscripted series on a timely topic, Flipping Foreclosures. The series, with six half-hour episodes, will follow the entrepreneurial team of Doug Clark and Mike Baird who buy and flip foreclosed property in Utah. Production will begin on location in Salt Lake City this summer and Spike TV plans to roll out the series in the fall. The series is executive produced and created by Dave Broome and 25/7 Productions.
A production deal was forged between REELZCHANNEL and Asylum Entertainment to develop and produce original scripted series for the network. The two entities first became partners after REELZCHANNEL picked up The Kennedys miniseries which attracted more than 2.0 million viewers per episode during the eight-part world premiere week on REELZCHANNEL. Asylum Entertainment and REELZCHANNEL plan on having an initial series completed for premiere on the network in 2013 or possibly late in 2012. Beyond a first series, the partnership will include developing and producing multiple scripted and unscripted projects together. Heading the partnership is Jonathan Koch, President/CCO of Asylum Entertainment while Joel Surnow, Executive Producer will be a consulting executive.
Comedian/writer/web pundit Chris Hardwick will host BBC America’s upcoming Saturday night comedy block, Ministry of Laughs debuting June 18 at 10p. The network also agreed to produce an original pilot/special inspired by Hardwick’s popular Nerdist podcast. Hardwick’s production company, Nerdist Industries and Comcast Entertainment Studios will produce the Ministry of Laughs host segments and the pilot for the panel talk show hosted by Hardwick based on his Nerdist podcast. The show will cover geeky culture topics from Los Angeles to London and highlight nerdy celebrity obsessions. Hardwick will further serve as executive producer with K.P. Anderson and Jay James for Comcast Entertainment Studios.
Former Republican National Convention Chairman Michael Steele will become a political analyst on MSNBC, effective immediately. Previously, Steele held a comparable role on Fox News Channel.
Casting Call: SEGI, Inc. is seeking females aged 16 to 20 for The Great Tampa Bay Model Search held in Tampa, FL on June 25, 2011. The Model Search television series with two episodes will result in one amateur model getting a guest appearance in a national TV show, a trip for two to the Bahamas, a professional model photo shoot and the right to represent the Tampa Bay area in a state-wide Model Search competition. Potential contestants do not have to reside in the greater Tampa Bay, FL area to participate.
