Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 22, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
CBS Sports expands its college basketball coverage via a deal with ESPN to acquire the rights to broadcast Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12 and Pac-12 games. Starting in the 2012-13 college basketball season, CBS Sports will carry 20 games per year from across the conferences, then 26 each year after in the multi-year agreement, though CBS did not specify the length of the deal. In the first year, the deal includes six ACC appearances, a number that jumps to 12 for each year that follows. CBS is also slated to broadcast the Missouri Valley Conference Championship game each year and the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship game in 2013. CBS Sports already has deals in place to carry regular-season and conference championship games from the Big Ten and Conference USA.

Tennis Channel is slated to carry nearly 60 hours of live matches for the upcoming French Open beginning Sunday May 27 and running through Sunday June 10. The network said most of its schedule during that time will be dedicated to the two-week tennis competition. Breaking it down on a daily basis, Tennis Channel expects to run live matches from 10a to 3p, followed by encore coverage of the best matches, then three hours of interviews, analysis and highlights during its 7p show French Open Tonight, hosted by Bill Macatee. Tennis superstars John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova will serve as lead analysts. In addition, the network will carry more than 300 hours of live matches online on its Web site at tennischannel.com. Tennis Channel said its will cross-promote its coverage with ESPN2.
The Southeastern Conference may be launching its own channel in time for the 2014 football season, according to a report in SportsBusiness Journal. The report said the college football conference is in talks with CBS and ESPN about restructuring its TV contracts and that a potential SEC channel could take a number of financial forms whether for rights, partnerships or revenue sharing.
Al-Jazeera is said to be rolling out two soccer-centric sports channels in the U.S. in August. To be called IN Sports USA, the networks will focus on soccer from Spain, France and Italy as well as tournament and World Cup qualifying games, said an Associated Press story.
The second season of IGFA Saltwater Adventures beings tomorrow on World Fishing Network with a best of season one episode at 8p, followed by the second season premiere at 8:30p. The hi-def show is hosted by Bill Boyce as he travels to saltwater fishing locales around the world including Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Tahiti, the Seychelles, Grand Cayman, Grenada and Southern California. The show is produced by WFN and the International Game Fish Association. The first four episodes of season two highlight Boyce’s stops in Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama. WFN and WFN reach more than 30 million homes in North America, WFN says.
ABC is set to carry the 96th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday May 27, marking the 48th year in a row that the racing event has been carried on ABC. The pre-race show begins at 11a with the race slated to start at 12:12 p. Brent Musburger hosts and Marty Reid will call the race, alongside analysts Scott Goodyear and Eddie Cheever.

Sponsorship & Promotion
NASCAR is aiming to go green, or greener, at least. The auto racing sport forged a “voluntary partnership” with the Environmental Protection Agency to encourage more environmental awareness and use of green products with NASCAR fans and within the sport. Areas of potential improvement include sourcing more sustainable concessions, conserving water, expanding the use of DfE-labeled chemical products and growing the promotion of recycling. NASCAR Green will be the name of fan-facing effort to build awareness among fans and business partners of greener practices for the sport.
Sports Marketing Consultant Jimmy Lynn joins the advisory board of SpotlightTMS to provide strategic counsel for the company, which measures the impact of tickets, suites and sports sponsorships. David Carter, who’s authored four books on the business of sports, also joins the board.
Digital Fields
FoxSports.com broadened its social sphere by inking deals with Pulse, Washington Post Social Reader and Zite to bring Foxsports.com content to social readers on tablets, mobile devices and Facebook. Fox said it’ll optimize the experience for each social reader platform.
