Cynopsis: DIGITAL
5/01/07
Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, May 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Sony Television is planning to launch the Minisode Network in June, offering shortened versions of TV episodes for an exclusive initial run on MySpace. The idea is to take the fun bits of Sony-owned shows such as Charlie’s Angels and T.J. Hooker and compress them into 5-10 minute webisodes, which Sony may repurpose later on a separate broadband channel. The Seven Minute Sopranos primer posted on YouTube helped inspire the plan, according to Sony TV president Steve Mosko.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
Through its online component, History.com, The History Channel is introducing a group of digital short-form originals this year:
- Band of Bloggers debuts third quarter; will cull soldiers’ videos about their war experiences from the battlefield.
- Young Indiana Jones Documentary Collection premieres fourth quarter; George Lucas supervised production of 94 half-hour documentaries that are historically accurate and complement the fictional television movies.
- Hero Ships starts fourth quarter; short-form broadband series that researches accounts of famous ships such as the USS Missouri or USS Omaha.
- History Uncut begins second quarter; specific moments in history are presented unedited and unfiltered.
- The Naked Underground debuts second quarter; this broadband series is a spin-off of the weekly series Cities of the Underworld. Each 4-5-minute short-form segment examines an urban myth about a city.
- Greatest Stores Ever Told premieres fourth quarter; based on the books by Rick Beyer and each segment relates an unknown, peculiar story from history.
A&E will also unveil several new digital properties at its upfront presentation in New York today according to B&C, including:
- Dog 2.0 – an animated web-only spin off of hit real life series Dog the Bounty Hunter
- Nick’s World – a video blog from Nick Tweed-Simmons, star/son of Gene Simmons Family Jewels
- A broadband site for digital cable network Crime & Investigation featuring A&E, History Channel and Biography Channel library content
- ParamormalState.com – a broadband site tied to a new series of the same name featuring consumer-generated documentation of paranormal phenomenon
Meanwhile, AETN is rolling out a new Digital Media Tool kit of web and mobile-based applications to help distribution partners develop customizable multiplatform marketing materials. Put together by recent hire Mark Garner, VP of Affiliate Distribution and Business Development, the tools will focus on reaching out to consumers on multiple platforms with co-branded messaging, programming reminders and social networking functionality. A “Born on this Day” feature from Biography, for example, provides information about famous individuals whose birthdays match those of the registered users.
http://www.VH1Classic.com launched as a portal for 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s music. The site features video playlists from the VH1 archive such as the 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s, as well as message boards, games and ringtones. Additional interactive features enabling user ratings and commentary will be added in the coming months.
In addition to uploading their own movie spoofs parodying hit films from last year, movie fans can go online to vote for the new “Best Summer Movie You Haven’t Seen Yet” category for this year’s MTV Movie Awards. Viewers can also vote from their mobile phones by texting “MOVIES” to 22422.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
YouTube introduced new customizable features allowing users to re-arrange videos and favorites in any order as well as the option for users to require approval before comments are posted to their submissions. A new feature called TestTube enables “active sharing,” showing others the six most recent clips you’ve watched.
Vegas.com and CineVegas Film Festival are sponsoring a contest inviting users to create their own 30-60 second video spot promoting Vegas as a travel destination. The winner, to be chosen by a panel of judges at the festival in June, receives $5,000 in cash and the chance to direct as national spot for Vegas.com.
Online video search engine Blinkx added PBS streaming video content to its site. News, public affairs programming and a broad array of documentaries are now indexed and searchable on the site.
Kyte.tv is a new online video portal that ads video-capable cell phones to the distribution mix. Users can upload videos and mash ups from and to mobile devices and combine text-based chat, poll and social functions with the content. The business model includes charging companies to run promotional programming and advertising alongside user-generated fare.
The Flip Video camcorder unveiled a new software tool that automatically formats user-generated video for easy upload to You Tube or Grouper. The pocket-sized camera, which retails for $119, also now ships with editing software and a USB connection for easy connection to a PC.
Barna-Alper Productions made a strategic investment in online and mobile video destination iThentic . The production and distribution service recently launched a mobile video service on Rogers Vision, including two dedicated channels of original content. A similar service is planned for the U.S. and Europe through Cellfish . The new joint venture will operate both from Toronto and New York.
Mobile virtual network joint venture Helio continues to drag down earnings for Earthlink. The ISP announced a net loss of $30 million for the first quarter of ’07, almost all of it attributable to the mobile phone carrier Earthlink operates with SK Telecom of South Korea. Helio is trying to use social networking features to attract new subscribers. The company has an exclusive deal with MySpace to offer a multimedia version of the service on its phones.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
CBS Television Stations will adopt Microsoft’s new Silverlight media platform for a community generated content initiative on its local stations. Visitors to CBS O&O sites will be able to use the Silverlight plug in to view, upload, share, rate, comment on and search through each other’s video, audio, text and image-based submissions.
The Supreme Court ruled Microsoft doesn’t owe AT&T patent royalties for digital speech compression software installed on foreign produced and sold computers. The ruling said a previous court ruling, which favored AT&T, gave too much protection to existing patent holders and didn’t allow for “ordinary” innovations. Justice Ginsburg called for Congress to close the “software specific loophole” in U.S. law which makes software code un-patentable.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Yahoo countered GoogleClick by buying the remaining 20% stake in Right Media it does not already own, agreeing to pay $680 million in stock and cash for the New York-based ad exchange. Yahoo said it plans to sell more non-premium display ads on its site utilizing the auction-based system, increasing liquidity in the ad market. User generated content is increasing demand for advertising in the non-premium space.
Viral branded marketing campaigns featuring branded video clips, online wallpaper and other features now account for 70% of revenues on MySpace, compared to a year ago when 70% of revenue came from click-through banner ads. The company has doubled its sales force to 200 targeting viral marketing this year, signing advertisers such as Adidas and Electronic Arts to broad-based campaigns.
CBS Radio‘s online division plans to use TargetSpot‘s ad-creation software to attract advertisers new to traditional radio. The system allows users to create their own audio spot and choose demographic and geographical parameters to help target where it is streamed. CBS owns nearly 140 stations that stream on the net, as well as an additional group of web-only stations.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Spending on video ad networks, digital billboards and other alternative out-of-home marketing increased by 27% to $1.69 billion in 2006, according to PQ Media. Digital billboards was the fastest growing category, up 55.4% last year. Out-of-home marketing grew by 10.6% overall.
Music Choice recorded its 800 millionth total video on demand view after a record-breaking 55 million orders in March, according to Rentrack.
~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
U.K.-based social networking site Bebo hired former MTV and BBC executive Angel Gambino to the newly created post of Vice President, Music. She will responsible for helping artists and labels reach out to audiences among the sites base of 31 million worldwide users. Angel reports to Joanna Shields, President-International.
CraveOnline opened up a Chicago sales office and appointed former About.com executive Jason Cange as Account Executive, Midwest Region to head it. Jason reports to David Cohn, SVP/Advertising Sales.
Former MediaVast and Fox Sports Interactive executive Craig Peters was named Vice President of Getty Images‘ new Footage and Multimedia division. He will be responsible for growing footage collections, attracting new customers and developing a new website for distribution of digital Getty-owned content.
RIVR Media Interactive has named Terry Hummel as President. Terry’s first project is to launch RMI’s multimedia broadband property, www.needled.com, slated to go live May 1, 2007. Needled.com is a web site for tattoo enthusiasts, blending viewer-generated, proprietary, and third-party content to provide access to the most important elements of the fine art of tattoo.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
The internet has become a great tool for putting pressure on television executives. http://www.watchveronicamars.net/ was started last year by a group of fans on blogging community LiveJournal who call themselves the Cloud Watchers. Their goal was to insure the survival of the cult series following the merger of UPN and The WB in to The CW. The site helped mobilize an effort that culminated in the hiring of aerial banner that flew around L.A., pleading CW execs to “Renew Veronica Mars!” This year Cloud Watchers distributed 30,000 flyers advertising the series’ return today in the top 4 DMA’s New York, L.A., Chicago and Philadelphia, realizing viewers in Nielsen homes are the real decision makers.
A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
