Cynopsis: Sports
05/17/11
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 17, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Last year’s off-season intrigue involving high-profile NBA free agents is paying off for the league, with game one of the Eastern Conference Finals on TNT between the Chicago Bulls and the Miami Heat scoring as the most viewed NBA game in cable history. Drawing an average of 11.1 million viewers and a 6.2 household rating, according to Nielsen, the ratings managed to top the 2003 All-Star Game, featuring Michael Jordan’s last appearance at the game.
Overall, the channel’s coverage topped last year’s game one of the 2010 Western Conference Finals (featuring the Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Lakers), by 41% in rating, and 56% in total viewers. Game two of the Eastern Conference Finals continues on Wednesday.
ESPN and Tennis Channel have unveiled their plans for this year’s French Open, which will include a 3D weekend event. On ESPN, the channel will hit Roland Garros in Paris with more than 56 hours of HD coverage on ESPN2 HD beginning on Sunday, May 22. ESPN3.com will showcase nearly 350 hours of action, and ESPN Deportes has slated 18 hours of programming around the event.
Meanwhile, Tennis Channel will bring the Grand Slam event to American televisions in 3D for the first time on Memorial Day weekend. With partners AT&T U-verse, Comcast and DIRECTV, the channel will televise all matches from center court in 3-D from May 28-30. Overall, Tennis Channel will bring more than 75 hours of live or first-run matches to viewers, with another dozen hours of men’s and women’s semifinal same-day encores.
Other notes from French Open coverage include:
- French Open Tonight, hosted by Bill Macatee, will return each evening for three-and-half hours of highlights, interviews, analysis and special reports.
- Tennis Channel has upgraded their video player to stream live and on-demand matches for free on its Web site.
- ESPN.com will provide comprehensive coverage before, during and after the French Open, highlighted by an enhanced Courtcast section real-time scoring from all courts, plus continuous live polling with results revealed immediately in ESPN2’s telecasts. In addition to all the results, news, analysis, schedules and more, ESPN.com will provide live blogging throughout the tournament.
- ESPN’s on air talent will include Cliff Drysdale, Darren Cahill, Mary Joe Fernandez, Brad Gilbert, Patrick McEnroe and Pam Shriver as well as Chris Fowler and Chris McKendry.
- Tennis Channel talent on deck will include John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Mary Carillo, Lindsay Davenport, Justin Gimelstob, Corina Morariu, Katrina Adams and Barry MacKay as well as returning play-by-play men Ted Robinson, Ian Eagle and Leif Shiras.
As the popularity of MMA continues to grow, veteran broadcast executives Mike Garrow, Cal Millar and Romen Podzyhun are creating the first 24/7 combat sports channel dubbed Fight Now TV. The channel will look to air coverage of MMA, boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, kickboxing and other combat sports as its programming backbone. The channel will launch on Tuesday, May 24 with Garrow serving as GM. Programming will include series such as Every Night a Different Fight, Talking Boxing with Billy C, MMA Junkie Radio Live and News Hitz.
It’s a battle of the brands with two of soccer’s biggest clubs, Barcelona and Manchester United, set to play in the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final. Analysts are projecting record American audiences for the match, which will be carried on Fox Sports as well as Fox Deportes on May 28. Pregame coverage will begin at 2p on Fox Sports, and at 1p on Fox Deportes. Fox Soccer will also carry a special one-hour pregame at 1p as well as a match preview on May 27 at 8p. Last year’s match between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan attracted 1.6 million viewers on Fox.
Sky Sports has locked in an agreement with Endemol for pre-season soccer tournament the Dublin Super Cup which features clubs such as Manchester City, Inter Milan and Celtic. The three-year deal will begin with the premiere launch of the tournament on July 20.
As expected, the Houston Astros have formally reached an agreement to sell the team to a group led by Houston businessman Jim Crane for $680 million. The team announced the deal Monday although the sale is subject to approval by Major League Baseball. Outgoing owner Drayton McLane purchased the team in November 1992 for about $117 million. Crane noted that former Houston Rockets president George Postolos would serve as the team’s CEO once the deal goes through.
Fresh off a $2 billion deal with NBC Sports Group, the NHL is inviting tenders for its international media rights of live NHL games throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa for the 2011-12 through 2014-15 seasons. Evolution Media Capital will manage the tender process. The deadline for bids is set for June 8.
HRTV has locked in its programming for the Preakness Stakes, where Kentucky Derby longshot Animal Kingdom will look to capture the second leg of the Triple Crown. Broadcasts will begin from Pimlico on Wednesday where HRTV will broadcast the Preakness Stakes post position draw.
Tonight, Larry the Cable Guy will square off against the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, as part of HISTORY’s “Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy” at 9p. “75 million people were watching when a Dallas cowboy cheerleader turned and winked at a TV camera. A third of the country saw that and these girls have been America’s darlings ever since…from winking at a camera,” he said. “That’s how I got my start.”
Sponsorship & Promotion
TNT is creating a promotional feast for the senses as the channel gears up for its NASCAR coverage this summer. With NASCAR ratings once again on the upswing, the network is creating a marketing initiative within the Charlotte EpiCentre that will include a full takeover of a four-story elevator shaft in the main courtyard, staircases, and a 26-foot TNT logo on the ground at the base of the elevator shaft. In addition, according to the network, “Enhanced audio technology called ‘directional audio’ will complement the EpiCentre campaign with a concentrated beam of audio (imagine a flashlight, but with audio instead of light) directed to a specific location. When an individual walks through the audio beam, they will hear custom tune-in audio messaging AC/DC’s “T.N.T.”, engines revving, cars speeding around the racetrack – only heard within the beam. When individuals exit the beam, they won’t hear it anymore.”
In a partnership with Valvoline, NASCAR on TNT will equip service stations in Charlotte with Summer Series signage, banners, as well as outfit each service tech in “NASCAR on TNT” crew shirts. The TNT NASCAR Summer Series kicks off on June 12.
The U.S. Olympic Committee has broadened the organization’s sales relationship with NBC Sports to include the home improvement category. NBC had already handled the financial services sector for the USOC. As part of the deal, NBC and the USOC will partner to sell home improvement sponsorship and advertising packages.
The New York Mets and PIX11 will team up to host the sixth annual “Weather Education Day” on Thursday Citi Field for 8,000 students from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, before the team takes on the Washington Nationals at 1:10 p.m. The students will be given a pre-game meteorology lesson by PIX11 weather experts Mr. G and Linda Church, in an effort to teach them about weather patterns and phenomenon. Mr. Met and the Pepsi Max Party Patrol will also be on hand to entertain students and fire t-shirts into the crowd. Of course, students will stay afterward to watch the game.
GolTV has expanded its sales force, adding Tyler Verdery as account executive in Los Angeles. Verdery joins GolTV from The Search Agency, Inc. where he spent the past two years creating client-specific integrated online marketing campaigns as the Director of Business Development.
NASCAR is rewarding race fans who help the environment with complimentary tickets to this year’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. A select number of fans who opt to recycle a cellular phone or smartphone at either NASCAR Rev’d Up on Wednesday or the Sprint Pit Crew Challenge presented by Craftsman on Thursday will each receive a pair of tickets to attend the May 21 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Digital Fields
ESPN.com has created RacingLive!, a home for NASCAR fans looking to chat during ESPN’s telecasts of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. RacingLive! on will function as a live blog where fans can debate and discuss all things NASCAR with ESPN.com writers and editors during the NASCAR Sprint Cup races. On Saturday night, May 21, RacingLive! All-Star will kick off to coincide with the NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Basketball and ping-pong balls. Texas and Oklahoma. ESPN will air the NBA Draft Lottery tonight beginning at 7:30 where the order of the teams will be announced. The announcement will be followed immediately by Game One of the NBA Western Conference Finals between Dallas and Oklahoma City at 9p.

Emails to the Editor in response to:
- In My Opinion:
- First of all, I’m much obliged and grateful for all the kind words and show of support with the launch of Cynopsis Sports. There seems to be in infinite amount of material to cover and I’m thrilled with this opportunity.
- What may be the biggest issue from this past week is one that is both baffling yet unsurprising. Last year, the Fiesta Bowl netted $15 million as a part of the BCS system, which included $2.9 million alone from Big East champion UConn for unsold tickets for their game against Oklahoma. That’s a lot of money from Connecticut taxpayers. So after the BCS came down with a $1 million fine, to be paid to Arizona’s youth, for potentially illegal reimbursements paid to employees for political donations as well as lavish spending by executives, bowl organizers were more than happy to pay the fee. In addition, the Fiesta Bowl was allowed to stay in the BCS.
- With the Justice Department now involved in an investigation into the legality of the BCS system, and more states mulling lawsuits, a slap on the wrist wasn’t the right image for an already beleaguered organization, whether you like the BCS or not. What do you think should have been done?
- (Agree or disagree? Email your comments to chris [email protected] for inclusion under Emails to the Editor on Monday)

I have an issue with any organization that establishes a competition platform that…
- a) incorporates exclusion at any level.
- b) relies on subjective opinion (ie: strength of schedule) to evaluate potential participants.
- c) uses a “cyber” model that is questionable, at best, to “enhance” the selection process.
A championship should simply be based on objective head to head competition between which teams (or individuals) won the most games. If any other evaluation factor needs to be included, it would have to be a second objective criteria such as total points scored. If this means that the coach of Team A chooses to “run up the score” in a game against Team B, in an effort to showcase the teams prowess and establish a stronger position in the final selection process, that’s simply playing to win…nothing more…nothing less.
Votes of coaches, sportswriters, etc…computer analyses and all the other”stuff” simply clouds the issue and turns straight up competition into an ultimate political contest.
Simply stated…”MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN”…period!!!!

I love the new Cynopsis Sports! Keep up the great work.
As for the Fiesta Bowl, I can’t believe that this isn’t going on in some shape or form in the other BCS game cities. John Junker has always been a slimy fellow, and it didn’t surprise me one bit. I live in Phoenix, and the Fiesta Bowl and the BCS National championship mean so much to the valley. Not only with the dollars it brings in for tourism, but it is a game that everyone looks forward to every year. I think keeping it a BCS game was the smart choice. Who doesn’t love coming here in the dead of winter to support their team?!?!
I do think the fine could have been more, but I do think the bowl moved quickly in removing the offenders, and trying to immediately fix the problem.
