Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
05.15.12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 15, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

One Secret to Finding a Job…

There are many theories about how to get a job, and every one of them will work for someone.  Somewhere in the world, someone will get hired because he sent his resume taped to the inside of a pizza box.

But there are other ideas that will assist many more people in getting a job, this is one of them.

If you’re sending out resumes to many companies, there is no way to simply remember all the important information.

Organize everything.

On your computer, make a file for every company you have sent anything to, keep a copy of all correspondence within that file.  Even if they never email you back, keep the file.  Date everything.  Keep the files in some type of order, either by date or alphabetically.  Just make sure everything is organized.

Take notes on any phone calls you may have, the phone number, the person you spoke with and summarize what the call was about.  Put it in the file.

Prior to sending anything out to a company, check the file.  When did you last correspond and with whom? This will quash any redundancies, which companies and clients hate, and help get the right information to the right person.

Having all emails to and from a company and the notes on any phone calls in one file, allows you to develop a relationship with that company, or at least with the person you’re emailing or talking to.

Set a schedule, every three to six months, contact the company again.  Refer to prior emails, phone calls, anything and everything.  The company will be impressed by your organizational skills.

When you get called in for an interview, study the file and bring it with you.  Mention the people you have had contact with by name, planting the idea you are already a part of the company.  This along with your research of the company should create a compelling reason to hire you.

Next Issue: One Man’s Desperation…

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Managing to Survive in Your Career
by Lisa Kaye

Walking on a tight rope?  Feeling like you may need them, but they don’t necessarily need you?  Wondering when you might be fired or worse just “ignored” enough to make you want to quit?  Managing to survive in your career when the odds are building up against you takes a certain amount of courage and guts.  It’s not easy not to feel wanted or needed when you were hired to do a job and you feel like you are constantly looking over your shoulder, uninvited to attend meetings or questioned at every turn. Managing to survive and managing your career can be one in the same when you are ready to jump ship or feel like you are being pushed off.

It’s not easy out there no matter what your level is within an organization or where you are in life.  Stress builds as more and more companies emphasize immediate results and the tolerance or patience to let things grow and build wanes.  This doesn’t help you, the “employee” whether you are running the company or are in a line position.  Finding the balance, keeping your fear in check and above all following your intuition are key in succeeding in this quagmire you call work.  Strategically following your instincts helps you balance so you are not panicking every time you are excluded from something you think you should be included in on and knowing when it’s appropriate to react from disengaging.

This is no easy task believe me.  Talking yourself down from the proverbial ledge, as I like to describe it, takes a lot of doing especially when you are the only one you can seem to trust.  Having the insight to know when the sound of your own voice helps you calm and reassure you may help relieve your panic before real terror sets in.  You are your own best friend and at times like these, sometimes you can be your own worst enemy.  Learning when to get out of your own way in times of trouble is a crucial life skill you need to learn early on if you are going to survive in your career long-term.  Listening and trusting yourself guides you to make the right choice when you most need the help. Understanding this makes the ability to calm your fears before they take over and you make a critical mistake in your job or worse, abruptly quit your job out of frustration.

Coming to terms with the fact that you may not always be in control of your situation helps you know that you do have choices just the same.  You can choose how you want to react to any situation or how to address it in a way that helps you maintain your cool when the fires are burning all around you.  Building your allies internally and externally in times of trouble makes you know that you are not alone and that help is near.  Your support system is crucial when you are figuring out how to survive in your career.  At the end of the day, knowing when to fight or take flight is a personal decision only you can make and there is no right or wrong answer.

Having the courage to take action whether that is to walk away from a job, suck it up and play nice or go it on your own, means that you know what’s best for you. All you need to do is trust yourself, and let instincts guide you on your career path no matter what obstacles you face along the way.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Lisa Kaye

I was wondering if you could provide me some insight on how I can go about contacting an Executive Producer for a new show. I’ve been trying so very hard to put myself in front of him or his team to be a production assistant for the show. Can you please provide me your professional advice on how I can get my resume to him?

Let me answer the question by asking one, “Who do you know in your network that has a direct line into the EP?” It is really about networking your way in through someone you know and not relying on traditional means of applying for the job, i.e., job posting, career site, etc.

Check your LinkedIn account for mutual connections or Hollywood 411 Directory or the Creative Directory to obtain contact information for the EP.  Start asking your network for leads because, honestly the sure fire way of getting in front of him would be through a mutual referral, friend or direct contact who is willing to make an introduction on your behalf even if you do not know the person directly.

It’s really about being “All In The Family” when it comes to networking your way to an opportunity you want, particularly within the entertainment industry and especially when it comes to the production side of the business.

None of us likes to think that nepotism exists, but let’s face it, it’s easier to hire someone you know and trust then take a risk on the unknown. Pull out all the stops and start asking your contacts for an introduction. This is not the time to by shy about your relationships, now is the time to leverage them!

Over the last couple of years I’ve lost touch with some people in my network (demanding job, little free time, excuses, excuses) but I had really great informational interviews and would like to get back in touch. How can I do so without sounding desperate?

It’s not uncommon for many to get caught up in the daily routine of life and work to loose touch with former friends and colleagues along the way. If you are looking to reach out to old acquaintances – no excuses needed. Just an honest outreach effort on your part to reconnect should do the trick.

As for folks you have a less personal connection with, and may have met on an informational basis, it’s always good to refresh their memory and not assume because you remember who they are, they necessarily remember who you are.

Start off by stating, “It’s been quite some time but I wanted to reach out to you and reconnect as I so enjoyed our meeting (time frame) and wanted to see how you were doing and if there is anything I can do to help you?”

Offering your assistance is always a good way to break the ice, not look like you are begging for something and open the door gently for a new opportunity to reconnect. Being available and offering your support to others will more likely make them want to offer you the same support and assistance in return.

Do not feel like you have to let time pass you by to reconnect with someone who made a good impression on you and who offered you assistance at a time when you needed it. Now is the time to repay the attention with offering your support in the hopes that all good things will come around again.
