Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 15, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBCUniversal laid out plans for the company’s upcoming Spanish-language Olympic coverage, providing more than 173 hours of the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games on Telemundo, the most in company history. Telemundo’s coverage will feature sports such as boxing, swimming, basketball and soccer. As part of Telemundo’s programming slate, the channel will offer Olympics content across its multiple platforms including its broadcast network, www.NBCOLYMPICS.COM.com/TELEMUNDO and its cable network mun2, which will offer a daily half-hour special featuring behind-the-scenes from the Games. In addition, for the first time in the network’s history, Telemundo will offer live streaming of broadcast coverage together with exclusive digital-only content of Olympic events, news, announcements and information via the Olympics site, for over 200 hours of digital content.
The channel’s Olympic team will include Andres Cantor, as well as Jessi Losada, Monica Noguera, Sammy Sadovnik, Edgar Lopez, Rene Giraldo, Karim Mendiburu, Kaziro Aoyama, Oscar Guzman, Leti Coo and Verónica Contreras, as well as several former Olympic champions.
The NBC Sports Group announced that coverage of the first two rounds of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs have averaged 1.06 million viewers, marking the most-watched Conference Quarterfinals and Conference Semifinals on record. Via NBC, NBC Sports Network and CNBC, the 2012 Conference Semifinals averaged 1.32 million viewers. According to Fast National data released by The Nielsen Company, the 2012 Conference Semifinals averaged 1.29 million viewers on the NBC Sports Network, for a 43% boost over last year and pulled an average of 1.32 million viewers across NBC, the NBC Sports Network & CNBC, up 28% over 2011 numbers. The key Game 7 between the Rangers and Capitals on Saturday was seen by 1.68 million viewers on the NBC Sports Network, marking the second most-watched 2012 Conference Semifinal game on cable.
The Players Championship handed Golf Channel with record viewership for the tournament. Friday’s round two of the event scored as the most watched early round for this championship on record, according to the network. The round was seen by an average of 1.8 million viewers on Golf Channel, according to Nielsen preliminary data, to mark a boost of 86% over 2011. NBC, meanwhile, saw round three of the tournament rise 56% year-to-year on Saturday.
Golf Channel also announced that heading into the 2012 US Open, the network will begin airing special replays on Tuesdays over the next four weeks that revisit some of the most memorable final rounds of the tournament. The special replays begin tonight at 8p with the late Payne Stewart’s dramatic, 1999 U.S. Open victory over Phil Mickelson at Pinehurst, which took place just months before the tragic plane crash that took Stewart’s life.
HRTV unveiled plans for the Preakness Stakes, shifting to Pimlico for the 137th running of the $1 million race. Coverage on the channel begins Wednesday. Scott Hazelton, Richard Migliore, Aaron Vercruysse, Jeff Siegel, Zoe Cadman and Carolyn Conley will all be on-site and the network will once again broadcast the Preakness Stakes post-position draw at 6p. HRTV’s Westrock Coffee First Call offers one-hour shows on both Friday and Preakness Day.
Tennis Channel named long-time television producer Gary Lang as the company’s Vice President, Production where he will have day-to-day oversight of the production department’s creative content for its coverage of the Grand Slams, domestic tournament remotes and daily studio productions. Most recently, Lang produced Thursday Night Football for the NFL Network.
The ESPN family of networks will combine to offer up to 62 games of the NCAA Division I Softball Championship from Friday, May 18 to Wednesday, June 6. The lineup will include telecasts of every Women’s College World Series and every game from all eight Super Regional sites. SEC teams earned the most bids this year by conference with nine, followed by the Pac-12 with eight.
WWE is partnering with Full Sail University that will shift live tapings of WWE NXT to Full Sail Live, the university’s performance venue, and create a new student scholarship fund. Beginning Thursday, students of the university’s entertainment-focused degree programs, including Film, Show Production, Digital Arts and Design, Internet Marketing and Entertainment Business, will be able to gain real-world experience working with WWE with all proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales going towards a scholarship fund for students enrolled at or planning to attend Full Sail University.
Root Sports, which is the rights holder of Pittsburgh Penguins’ regional telecasts, announced that the network posted an 8.03 average household rating for the 2011-2012 regular season, marking the first time that son that the channel has posted the highest local rating of any U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams, according to the company. Root Sports ratings from the second half of this season were up 21% over last year’s second half and first round playoff ratings were 22% higher than last year’s first round.
Citi, serving as the official bank sponsor of the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams, revealed its national advertising and marketing campaign featuring 13 Olympic and Paralympic qualifiers, hopefuls and alumni who are members of Team Citi. The campaign will include broadcast, print, out-of-home, digital, events, promotions and retail activation with the theme “Every Step of the Way.” The program will allow people to help allocate Citi’s $500,000 donation to the U.S. Olympic Committee among different sport programs that have inspired Team Citi’s 13 athletes. Athletes include Cullen Jones (swimming), Amanda McGrory (Paralympic track and field), Gwen Jorgensen (triathlon) and Kari Miller (sitting volleyball).
Fifth Third Bancorp announced a multi-year marketing partnership with Roush Fenway Racing that will begin this season with four races as the primary sponsor of Matt Kenseth’s No. 17 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
The New Jersey Transit is paying tribute to the Devils run in the playoffs with announcements at Newark Penn Station and Newark Broad Street while passengers embark and disembark at the stations. In addition, digital signs and print signs will be placed throughout Newark Penn Station.
Former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah has been hired to join the NFL Media team. Jeremiah spent a combined eight seasons with three NFL clubs, and will now serve as a regular contributor on NFL.com and NFL Mobile, where he will offer an Xs-and-Os perspective on players, teams and trends, and will play a key role in the site’s NFL Draft coverage. In addition, he will offer analysis on NFL Network. He joins NFL Media after serving for two years as the Philadelphia Eagles’ college area scout for the West.
