Cynopsis: Kids!

5/15/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 15, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

When it comes to Harry Potter there are so many questions and so few answers, you know like who will be killed-off in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (HP 7), if I don’t get HP 7 right away where can I find out what happens?, and what about the eighth HP bookHuh?  Sure author J.K. Rowling said HP 7 would be the last of the HP series, and technically it will be.  Rowling is, however, revisiting an idea she has discussed in the past, saying, “I might do an eighth book for charity, a kind of encyclopedia of the world so that I could use all the extra material that’s not in the books,” according to a report in the UK’s newspaper The Sunday Telegraph.  Rowling’s agent, Christopher Little, has verified that such a book could happen explaining that Rowling, “has retained the rights” to the HP series, including any further books, “which she may indeed writer herself.”

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Following up on its promise from earlier this year, Wales’ S4C Authority, which oversees S4C (in Welsh Sianel Pedwar Cymru, in English, Channel Four Wales), is looking to expand its programming offerings for kids and teens (up to 16) by launching a new Welsh language channel.  To that end S4C Authority has begun what it calls a 10-week “consultation,” where the public and key stakeholders can offer their views on the proposed service, which it plans to self-fund from its current budget and commercial revenue.  The new pubcaster would be available in Wales via digital satellite, digital cable and digital terrestrial TV.  Additionally, the channel will be accessible to viewers elsewhere in the UK via digital satellite and broadband.  The goal of a kid-targeted Welsh-language channel, at least in part, is to preserve the culture and language through kid/teen citizens.

It will be Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson directing and producing three back-to-back Adventures of Tintin movies for DreamWorks, according to Variety.  The movies will be produced in 3D digital and motion-capture technology.  Kathleen Kennedy will also serve as a producer on the movies.  The movie studio announced in March 2007 that it would produce movies based on the Herge Studios’ property, which follows the adventures of a young Belgian news reporter.  Spielberg and Jackson will each direct one of the Tintin movies, with no word on who would direct the third.  Both Spielberg and Jackson are longtime fans of Tintin, which was created as a comic strip by Georges Remi, aka Herge, in 1929.  Since then there have been 23 books published in a range of languages, all of which continue to be huge bestselling titles.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Remember thinking in school, if only they’d give credit for having stylin’ good taste?  Okay, so we’re different.  Aspiring teens stylist will be the focus of Star Stylist, The N’s new interactive, multiplatform reality series, hosted by Valery Ortiz, set to bow both on the network and its website on Friday, June 15.  Leading up to the actual show, teen stylists are invited to upload a video at The-N.com, showing what they think would be the ideal look for prom.  In the next phase, The N’s online viewers will vote for the eight finalists that will go on to vie for the title of Star Stylist.  The eight contestants will compete in six style-oriented challenges in as many weeks, eventually whittling down to three contestants, who will complete the last round in NYC.  Guiding the eight will be noted stylists Mark Jacobs, Louis Johnson and Jamie Rosenthal.   Amp’d Mobile subscribers, the official mobile provider for Star Stylist, will be able to watch five exclusive webisodes rolling out one a week leading up to the special finale, Friday, August 31 on The N.

Winnie the Pooh and the Hundred Acre Wood gang embark on quests to solve simple mysteries in the new computer-generated animated series Disney My Friends Tigger and Pooh premiering in Canada on Astral Media‘s Family Channel on June 18 at 1030a. Based on the books by A.A. Milne, the preschool series features Winnie the Pooh and introduces new characters, Lumpy The Heffalump and a young girl named Darby and her dog Buster. Each episode consists of two 11-minute stories.

Entertainment Rights has completed a number of TV and home video distribution deals for several of its animated series in Latin America.

  • Disney Channel Latin America has picked up the new George of the Jungle series, which it will premiere later this year; Cartoon Network Latin America will air the new Casper Scare School series and movie, and the UK series Basil Brush; National Geographic Latin America has acquired the pay TV rights to the preschool educational series Cubeez, which it will feature in its new preschool programming block, Nat Geo y Yo.
  • On the home video side ER newly inked home video deals include: Zima Kids (Mexico) picks up the home video rights to He Man, She Ra, Felix The Cat, and Underdog Show; Focus Filmes (Brazil) acquires rights to Mr. Magoo and He Man, She Ra; Quality Films takes the video rights for He Man in Chile and Argentina; Tycoon picks up Pan Latin America rights to Transformers Armada, which will be released this spring; and LogOn Multimedia takes rights to My Parents Are Aliens for Brazil.

Sony Picture Television International has inked a distribution for its Animax channel with Germany’s Unity Media.  Animax will launch in Germany from early June 2007 and will be available to digital pay-TV subscribers in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse regions, which accounts for some 5 million available cable households.  Additional distribution deals for Animax are expected to follow.

ADV Films and Propeller TV, the UK’s Yorkshire based channel on SkyTV, have teamed to launch an Anime Network programming block on June 3, 8-10p on Sundays.  Hosted by Sci-Fi Guy Stuart Clay and manga expert Emma Viecelie, the two hour block will feature anime series including Coyote Ragtime Show, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Guyver: The Bio-Boosted Armour and Elfen Lied.  As always all anime series are not for all ages.

MARKETING/LICENSING

EMI America Records will release Ocean’s Deadliest, Steve Irwin’s final documentary with explorer/environmentalist Philippe Cousteau, on June 19, 2007.  Narrated by Cousteau (grandson of Jacques Yves Cousteau), the documentary features Irwin, Cousteau and various experts as they explore the deadliest ocean creatures in the waters between Australia’s Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef.  Cousteau, who was with Irwin’s crew when Irwin was killed by a stingray, promised to complete the project after Irwin’s passing, as both a tribute to the Crocodile Hunter as well as the conversation message he was delivering.  Ocean’s Deadliest premiered on Animal Planet this January 2007.  Cousteau is the CEO/President/Co-Founder of EarthEcho International.

STONE SOUP

In other HP news, on her website yesterday J.K. Rowling (jkrowling.com) reached out in support of the dedicated HP fan site, http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/ , which has vowed not to post any spoilers.  Rowling implored those who would ruin the book for others, not to, writing, “I want the readers … to embark on the last adventures they will share with him [Harry] without knowing where they are going.”  To those who say that spoilers are good publicity and help sales, Rowling says, “… spoilers won’t stop people buying the book, they never have….”
