Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
05.14.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 14, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Welcome to Leadership Lessons, a new, regular column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Laureen Ong, President, Travel Channel.
What’s the first time you were in a leadership role?
My very first job was with TVS (TV Sports). I was immediately put into a leadership role when I was promoted, and then asked to hire my replacement and mentor this person.
What are early leadership lessons for you?
I always ask more questions and let others provide the answers. I find that too often, people expect you to have all the answers. A good leader knows how to pull this out of their teams. Also, you should always remember that certain personality types make some people more or less approachable than others. As nice as you think you are, your position will more times than not put you in the “unapproachable” zone. Know and understand this because you truly don’t know what it’s like to work for yourself.
What are some of the things you look for when interviewing people?
I look for diversity, logic, and the thought process that went into their roles and companies they’ve chosen to work for. Their career choices provide an understanding of what motivates them, and what their short and long term ambitions and goals are. I also want to find out what they are passionate about and how that relates to the role.
What interview questions do you like to ask?
I want to hear about which achievements they’re most proud of thus far. That tells me a lot. I also ask them to tell me about the best boss they’ve had and what made them a great supervisor. And I ask them what about this job and company interested them.

How do I become known as an opinion leader in the eyes of a potential employer?
With a large field of candidates to choose from, employers are often seeking candidates who bring a little something extra to the table. This is where being seen as a thought leader in your field has value. It positions you as both skilled and expert while adding to your resume.
Starting a blog can be one way to go about it. If done well, blogging will give the hiring manager a sense of your knowledge and experiences, above and beyond the information on your resume. Here is a rundown on how to get a free WordPress site up and running. Blogging combined with good SEO tactics helps you come up in a Google search, further enhancing your social media presence.
Sharing articles in LinkedIn groups and commenting on ones posted by others, tweeting articles and re-tweeting others are ways to be seen as an industry expert. Attending industry events and asking questions during Q & A sessions is another.
Outside of these social media platforms, responding to media inquiries found on Help a Reporter Out can be effective. This is a service that connects reporters with sources that are knowledgeable on the topics they are writing about.
How do I learn new skills while job seeking if I don’t have a lot of extra money to spend on classes?
Developing new skills can be an effective way in a tough job market to make you more competitive and build your confidence. We’re currently seeing a number of free or inexpensive online educational options changing the landscape-there’s never been a better time to conveniently and cost effectively add more weapons to your arsenal.
W3schools offer free online courses where you can learn about web development- a skill that’s always in demand. The site offers opportunities for beginners through advanced users. Similarly, edX offers a number of free online courses in subjects ranging from chemistry to computer graphics and artificial intelligence. For a relatively low cost, Lynda is one of several sites to offer 24/7 training in many subject areas from web development to programming. For $25/month you can try as many training videos as you like without a long-term commitment. (If you live in the New York City area, SIBL the New York Public Library’s specialized library for business on Madison and 34thnow offers free unlimited training using the Lynda courses.)
For free online classes taught by professors at top universities, try Coursera. Although you will not get college credit you will have some great info to show off in your next interview. Coursera offers classes in a range of subject areas, from history to management to biology. Similarly, Udacity is another great (and free) website for online learning, geared toward the sciences and programming.
Last, The Department of Labor operates offices throughout the country known as OneStop Career Centers. These offices provide many resources to help you find work, including access to computers, fax machines and printers. OneStop Career Centers also provide help with resumes, job applications and training for several software programs (such as Microsoft Office). Finally, they provide information regarding access to formal certification programs conducted by local colleges that may be free, if you qualify. Make an appointment to get an orientation and learn about the various training programs available in your area.
