Yesterday morning during NBC News’ Today, Meredith Vieira placed the official stamp on her future plans, saying she is leaving Today next month.  Ann Curry, who has been with Today since 1997, will take Vieira’s place as co-host with Matt Lauer and Natalie Morales will step into Curry’s place as newsreader.

Two more animated comedies received renewal orders from FOX as Family Guy will return for a tenth season and The Cleveland Show for a fourth season.  Both shows fall under the network’s Animation Domination block on Sunday nights and are produced by 20th Century Fox Television.  Seth MacFarlane is the creator/executive producer of Family Guy while MacFarlane along with Mike Henry and Rich Appel are executive producers and co-creators of The Cleveland Show. 

A multi-city spa tour embarks this weekend surrounding the upcoming premiere of TV Guide Network’s new original reality series, Nail Files.  Nail Files opens June 21 at 10p and 1030p and following its premiere, the series airs weekly on Tuesdays at 10p.  Prior to the on-air debut of Nail Files, an 11-city mobile spa tour will commence this Saturday at North Point Mall in Alpharetta, GA. 

The business biography series, Game Changers has a second run on Bloomberg Television starting tomorrow at 9p.  The opening episode profiles Sir Richard Branson and subsequent weekly episodes highlight the business careers of Rupert Murdoch, Reed Hastings and J.K. Rowling.  Most episodes of Game Changers are 30m in length though the episode focusing on Murdoch is a full hour.  Game Changers airs Tuesdays and Thursday at 9p.

Former pro golfer and 14-year commentary veteran of CBS Sports, David Faherty will be the centerpiece of a new primetime series on Golf Channel.  The series, titled Feherty is presently in production and will launch the week of June 20 following the U.S. Open.  During 12 half-hour episodes of Feherty, the series will cover various topics gleaned from revealing interviews involving personalities from sports, entertainment and politics.  In joining Golf Channel, Feherty will also become a contributing analyst for the network’s Live From coverage emanating from major golf events.

Clan Kardashian is back with a sixth season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians on E! premiering June 12 at 10p.  Throughout the 12-episode new season, the Kardashian family sets a goal of spending more quality time  together which encourages the revelation of many secrets.  Ryan Seacrest Productions and Bunim-Murray Productions produce the series. 

Seven young women comprise the new cast for the seventh season of Bad Girls Club as Oxygen’s original series debuts July 11 at 9p.  The new batch of Bad Girls will live together in a New Orleans mansion where they all jockey to be the head girl in charge.  Bunim-Murray Productions produces.

PBS is out of the gate early, announcing its fall programming slate prior to its Annual Meeting with PBS Stations next week in Orlando. For all programming check local listings:

  • PBS offers the first-ever PBS Arts Fall Festival starting October 14 at 9p, airing on Fridays through December.  The programming umbrella includes full-length performances, artist and performer profiles, documentaries and mini-films about the arts in Miami, San Francisco, Cleveland, Chicago, the Blue Ridge Mountains and elsewhere in the US. 
  • Prohibition is the latest docu-series from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick telling the true story of America’s “Great Experiment” involving gangsters, rumrunners, flappers and speakeasies to the culmination of the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution.  Music is provided by Wynton Marsalis with voice talent from Tom Hanks, Jeremy Irons, Paul Giamatti, Oliver Platt, John Lithgow, Samuel L. Jackson, Patricia Clarkson, Adam Arkin, Sam Waterston, Josh Lucas and more with narration by Peter Coyote.  Prohibition airs October 2-4 at 8p.
  • NOVA returns with The Fabric of the Cosmos, a four-part series hosted by physicist and author Brian Greene, airing on Wednesdays, November 2-23 at 9p.
  • Nature will also air on Wednesdays starting this fall paired with NOVA. 
  • PBS’ public affairs series, Need To Know re-launches on Fridays starting September 16 at 830p.
  • Frontline also continues airing year-round with weekly in-depth investigations on such topics as post-9/11 intelligence and national security, urban gangs and AIDS within the African American community. 
  • Other returning programs include PBS NewsHour, Charlie Rose, Independent Lens, Nightly Business Report, Tavis Smiley and Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal.

Effective immediately, Continental Television Sales, a unit of the Katz Television Group is representing WLNE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Providence owned by Citadel Communications. 

BBC America’s recent premiere of Doctor Who on April 23 attracted nearly 1.3 million total viewers factoring Live + Same Day data.  After the Live + 7 Day results were released, BBC America said the premiere episode boosted to 1.8 million total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

MTV Networks made a global distribution deal with Passion Distribution involving the fourth season of MTV’s Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory.  Passion Distribution has previously sold seasons one through three of the half-hour series to MTV Networks in Australia and New Zealand, Extreme Sports Channel in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa, MNET in South Africa and Solar in the Philippines.

TV One is now more available in the Chicago and Miami markets via Comcast’s Xfinity TV.  TV One was moved from Digital Preferred to the Digital Starter tier.

Washington DC-based TeleGraff Media completed various deals involving series on behalf of its clients:

  • First Battles with six half-hour eps picked up by Military Channel in the US and Discovery Networks International.  From Partners in Motion (Canada).
  • Countdown To The Future also from Partners in Motion (Canada) with nine half-hour eps sold to Discovery Latin America.
  • The second season of The Reinventors with a dozen half-hour eps for Smithsonian Networks.  From Partners in Motion (Canada).
  • Questar, Inc. licensed two series represented by TeleGraff Media: A World Apart with 13 one-hour eps from CIN TV (Spain) and Mythical Roads with 23 one-hour eps from Zed (France).

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Like mother, like daughter, Bristol Palin gets her own docu-reality series on BIO Channel scheduled to premiere later this year with ten half-hour episodes.  The new BIO Channel untitled series follows Palin as she moves from Alaska to Los Angeles with her son, Tripp where she has a new job at a small charity and moves in with her friends Kyle and Chris Massey. Palin appeared on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars will fellow celebrity contestant, Kyle Massey where the pair along with Kyle’s brother, Chris all became friends.  Single mom, Palin allows cameras to have exclusive access to her personal life as she makes these life-changing moves.  Associated Television International is producing the series for BIO.

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  An unusual four-way tie for #1 happened Friday night between ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC all delivering a 1.4/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX prevailed at 8p with Kitchen Nightmares at 1.6/6 followed by ABC’s Shark Tank and Univision’s Teresa sharing #2 at 1.2/5 each and the season premiere of Flashpoint on CBS in third at 1.1/4. During 9p, CBS’ CSI: NY topped with a 1.6/5 with NBC’s Dateline and Univision’s Teresa was a mere step behind at 1.5/5 apiece.  It was a battle between the newsmagazines at 10p as NBC’s Dateline grabbed #1 at 1.9/6 and ABC’s 20/20 followed closely at 1.7/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Jennifer Bennett named VP/Licensing and Merchandise for North America at Entertainment One (eOne).  Jennifer will be involved with the company’s licensing strategy surrounding the brand Peppa Pig in the US in addition to other North American licensing programs for other eOne assets from the TV, film and music units.  Jennifer will be based in Los Angeles.

Strategic media and marketing agency, Media Storm tapped Andrea Redniss as Managing Director/Digital, effective immediately.  In her new role, Andrea will head the agency’s digital department leading the company’s integration functions with a focus on the multi-platform arena.  Andrea will be based at the agency’s two offices in New York and South Norwalk, giving equal time to both locations.

Jon Kropp promoted to VP/Business Operations with Turner Sports for its golf digital business.  In his newly-minted position, Jon will manager Turner Sports’ golf digital business encompassing GOLF.com, PGATOUR.COM and PGA.com in addition to a sales and content relationship with Yahoo! Sports Golf.  Jon has been with Turner Sports for 14 years, most recently as VP/Strategy and Acquisitions. 

Marnie Black takes on the new position as SVP/Public Relations with AMC where she will serve as the consumer press strategist for the network working closely on a daily basis with Charlie Collier, President/GM.  In her role, though, Marnie reports to Ellen Kroner, EVP/Communications, Rainbow Media.  Prior to this appointment, Marnie operated her own communications company working with such clients at CNN, Comcast, Readers Digest among others.

Here Media Inc. hired Robert Ames as Chief Performance Officer based at the company’s New York offices.  Robert joins from Hachette Filipacchi Media.

Independent creative agency, Imagination Group elevated Eduardo A. Braniff as CEO for Imagination the Americas.  Eduardo previously was Global Insights Director for the last three years.  In his new role, Eduardo is charged with developing business for the company’s current offices in New York and Detroit and in Toronto and Los Angeles, the two cities where the company already has a presence as well as expansion plans into other cities based on clients’ business.
 
Out-of-home television network, Akoo employed Elise B. McVeigh as EVP/Sales to head advertising and sponsorship sales for the company’s network including 162 shopping malls and 22 universities in 63 US markets.  Elise reports to William “Billy” Campbell, President. Furthermore, Akoo added Derek Koenig as CMO where he will work closely with the company’s portfolio of advertisers to deliver marketing platforms and custom content programs.  Derek will also report to company president Billy Campbell.

Syfy Films tapped Gregory Noveck to the new position of SVP/Production responsible for developing projects for the film company by working closely with the Universal and Syfy creative teams.  Gregory will report to Mark Stern, President/Original Content, Syfy and to Donna Langley, Co-Head/Content for Universal Cable Productions and Co-Chairman, Universal Pictures.  Gregory joins from DC Comics where he was SVP/Creative Affairs and Executive Producer.
