Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

03.09.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, March 9, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Your Personal Elevator Speech

You have thirty seconds to convince someone that you are the person that should be hired.  What do you say?  Do you know?  Have you practiced it?  Now is not the time to improvise.  You have one shot, be prepared.

An elevator speech is a thirty second sales pitch for an idea, service, project or increasingly, you.  Think of it as a verbal cover letter.  You have very limited time to gain the interest of the listener.

The personal elevator speech has become more prevalent due to social networking.  You meet someone at a charity function and they are hiring.  They ask you about your background.  Elevator Speech.  You now have thirty seconds to convince this person why you are the right employee for the job.

Unsuccessful elevator speeches often start like this, “I was born in …” you’re done.

In order to have a chance, you must address the needs of the person you are talking to.

A successful pitch may start with, “This is how I can save your company money …”

In general, companies needs are very few.  Make more money, spend less money, make a better product, manufacture a product more efficiently.  If you can help a company do any of these, you’ve got your pitch.

Try not to start with a negative, why say, “You have a problem getting your product into stores on a timely basis, this is how I can help.”  When you can say, “I can get your products from plant to retail stores more efficiently, which will save you considerable  money.”

Quantify your statements whenever possible.  “I close 25% of all people I meet with, that is double the industry norm.”  “My clients bring in 15% more money and stay 2 years longer than with any other sales person within the company.”

If you don’t have these attributes, if in a moment of total self awareness you realize that you are just an average worker, try to use that to your advantage.  “I’m not a superstar, but superstars often flame out, get hired away or fired. You hire me and I will work hard for this company.”  Many hiring managers prefer to hit singles with new employees rather than swing for the fences.  Privately, one hiring manager confessed he didn’t want superstars, they are often unpredictable and rarely stay in one place for very long and have damaged his reputation as an expert in the field.  He wanted good workers who, quite frankly, stayed under the radar and created no problems.

Find your angle, create your elevator speech and practice.  The next person you meet, might be the one who wants to hear it.

Good Economic News

Experts predicting job losses to total about 50-60,000 for February were surprised when the actual number of 36,000 was revealed.  Although February’s losses were 10,000 more than January’s, the unemployed rate remained unchanged at 9.7, again a pleasant surprise as most thought the rate would move up to 9.8.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Dealing with a Forced Furlough
by Stephen Pollan and Mark Levine

Any company facing a temporary down turn in revenues or a short term cash flow crisis can potentially deal weather the storm by furloughing employees without pay. As a rule, furloughs are no shorter than one week and no longer than a month. Any shorter and the savings aren’t worth the ill will generated. Any longer and the company can’t count on the individuals all returning. Furloughs are most often done sequentially rather than en mass so impact on the business is minimized. Because these are often emergency measures you can’t assume you’ll get anything more than one week’s warning.

There’s little point in arguing or complaining about being furloughed, it won’t change the facts and will only put a future target on your back. And don’t expect honest answers about the implications for the future of the company; you’ll get only the best case scenario. Instead, you should focus on minimizing the potential harm to your personal finances.

You have two options for responding. First, you can try to make the loss of pay easier to absorb by trying to spread out the damage. If you’re asked to take a two week furlough, for instance, you can offer to work half time at half pay for four weeks. The total savings for the company will be the same, but you’ll have an easier time dealing with the shortfall, and the impact on the work flow will be less dramatic. Another alternative is to offer to give up your paid vacation, and to instead, work for those two weeks. While not offering short term relief for the company it will provide savings. And while it isn’t pleasant to go without a paid vacation, it might be preferable to going with a paycheck.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Stephen Pollan and Mark Levine

I have a phone interview next week, what should I do to prepare differently than I would for a sit down interview?

First, get all the supporting materials you might need organized on your desk so you can access it quickly. Second, if you have call waiting on your phone line, see if you can turn it off temporarily so you won’t be interrupted. Arrange it so your door bell won’t ring. Make sure the kids and pets are occupied elsewhere. Have a glass of water handy in case your throat gets dry. Learn how to use the mute button on your phone before hand so if you have to sneeze or cough you can do so without the other party hearing it. And make sure you’ve addressed all your bodily needs so you won’t feel the call of nature while discussing why you’re the right person for the job.

I just got hired at a mid sized company and I frequently see the boss around the office. Should I introduce myself to her or just not bother her?

You should introduce yourself…and you shouldn’t bother her. Don’t interrupt her in mid conversation or interject yourself into a meeting. Instead, catch her when she’s walking through the office. Excuse yourself, using her name, and she’ll automatically stop. Say that you’re a new employee and just wanted to introduce yourself. If she initiates conversation, go for it. If she just says “nice to meet you,” and walks on, don’t take it as a snub.
