~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Sunday night’s 82nd Annual Academy Awards telecast on ABC averaged approximately 41.3 million viewers and delivered a 13.1 rating among A18-49 from 830p to 1139p, up from 36.3 million viewers in 2009, according to Nielsen. This is the second year in a row the Oscar’s telecast has seen an increase. As expected, viewership in New York was lower this year with an estimated 29.4 HH rating versus a 34.1 HH rating in 2009, due to the partial WABC-TV blackout over the dispute between the station and Cablevision. The top market pulling in the highest HH overnight rating was Chicago at 37.6, followed by West Palm at 33.3, Boston at 33.2, Kansas City at 32.8 and San Francisco at 31.8. To date, the Oscar’s largest audience was in 2000 when Titanic and American Beauty vied for the Best Picture category with an average audience of 46.3 million.

A&E Network introduces some of recent history’s most interesting fugitive captures in the new original docu-drama series Fugitive Chronicles, premiering April 1 at 10p. Each of the nine one-hour episodes will recreate dramatic real-life manhunts combining archival footage, taped interviews and more to relate each story. Fugitive Chronicles is produced by Raw Television/RDF USA for A&E.

Discovery Communications is serving up the two-hour premiere of Discovery Channel’s natural history series Life on seven domestic Discovery US networks. The opening episode, airing on March 21 at 8p will be simulcast on Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel, Investigation Discovery, Planet Green and Discovery Health Channel. Following the premiere, the subsequent episodes will air on consecutive Sundays at 8p until April 18 only on Discovery Channel.

MTV is bringing back its weekly series True Life beginning March 15 at 10p. The docu-series shares diverse real-life stories of teens living around the globe.

NBC renewed its pact with Donald Trump and the Miss Universe organization to keep the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants on the network for three more years. The extension of the current contract begins next year with Telemundo additionally set to simulcast Miss Universe. NBC will air The 2010 Miss USA Pageant on May 16.

Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI Media) announced its Hispanic network Estrella TV is now a Nielsen rated network, effective March 8, within the Nielsen People Meter Sample.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Two major acquisitions for ABC Family:

  • The 3D film Alice in Wonderland from Walt Disney Pictures starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. ABC Family obtained the network television premiere rights for the film which will premiere on the network in 2012.
  • The television premiere rights to The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock, who just won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. ABC Family made the deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for the film, set to premiere in 2012.

Entertainment Studios, Inc., producer and distributor of the first-run syndicated series The Young Icons, said several additional station groups acquired the series for its Fall 2010 launch. The weekly, 30m hi-def show was picked up by station groups including Tribune, FOX O&Os, Cox, Newport, LIN, Belo, Sinclair, Local TV, New Age, Gannett, Acme and Block.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Television personality and model Brooke Burke was selected as the new co-host of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars working with Tom Bergeron for the upcoming new season. Burke, who was the winner of the show’s seventh season, will begin her co-hosting duties when the new season premieres March 22 at 8p. Most recently, Burke was host of TV Land’s competition series She’s Got the Look and is the new “Mommy Correspondent” on the nationally syndicated daytime talk show The Doctors.

TBS hired Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar as the leads in its 60m comedy pilot Franklin & Bash, thus lifting the contingency from the project, cites THR. From Sony Television, the project is about Jared Franklin (Meyer) and Steven Bash (Gosselaar), two street lawyers and buddies who are recruited by the patriarch of a top-drawer law firm. TBS also added Tim Meadows and Kelly Blatz to the ensemble cast for its other hour-long comedy pilot Glory Daze.

Coby Bell (Third Watch, The Game) was tapped for USA Network’s series Burn Notice as a regular. Bell will portray Jesse Garcia, an overly-confident and sarcastic counter-intelligence expert who can take on different cover identities. Burn Notice just finished its third season and will be back for a fourth season this summer.

Rob Morrow may switch networks as he was chosen to star along with Joely Richardson in ABC’s drama pilot The Whole Truth. Currently, Morrow stars in CBS’ drama Numb3rs which may or may not get a renewal notice. The casting for ABC’s pilot is in second position, though to his role on Numb3rs. In The Whole Truth, Morrow would play Jimmy, an enthusiastic and successful defense attorney who often battles against Kathryn (Richardson) a New York prosecutor with a stellar record.

Emmy Award-winning actress Jean Smart will play Hawaii’s Governor Pat Jameson on CBS’ updated version of Hawaii Five-O, per THR.

Tom Cavanagh, former star of Ed takes the lead role on ABC’s drama pilot Edgar Floats about a police psychologist (Cavanagh) who becomes a bounty hunter.

Former star of CBS’ Worst Week sitcom, Kyle Bornheimer will star in the untitled Bays/Thomas comedy pilot for CBS, reports THR. The multi-camera project is about an unmarried couple and their friends in Pittsburgh and Bornheimer will play Tommy, the boyfriend who is funny, slightly unkempt and means well. This casting is in second position for Bornheimer after ABC’s midseason comedy series Romantically Challenged.

More Casting News: Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous) and Melissa Rauch join Debra Messing in the comedy pilot Wright vs. Wrong for ABC; Tim Pepper was cast in the lead for FOX’s comedy pilot Most Likely to Succeed; Scott Foley was tapped for ABC’s cop drama True Blue; Nicholas Bishop will next star on ABC’s drama pilot Body of Evidence; Aly Michalka will headline and Gail O’Grady will co-star in The CW’s drama pilot Hellcats; and James Patrick Stuart and Cheyenne Jackson were added to ABC’s comedy pilot It Takes a Village, per THR.
