CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

03/08/05

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 8, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

DirecTV’s CEO/President Mitch Stern has left the building. Stern arrived at DirecTV just over a year ago (Dec 2003), moving from the top dog job at the Fox TV Stations Group.  He joined the executive team which is headed by Chase Carey, CEO of DirecTV Group Inc.  Stern’s position was to oversee the day to day ops of the satellite service, while Carey oversees the entire company.  Over the course of the year, various assets of the company have been sold, leaving essentially just the satellite service, and apparently two chiefs in the now smaller house was one too many.  That point is best illustrated by the company’s choice not to replace him, but rather that Carey will take over the day-to-day responsibilities.  In a statement, Carey said: “While we considered 2004 a transition year, DirecTV achieved a tremendous amount under Mitch’s leadership. Most notably, more new subscribers chose DirecTV last year than any other pay television service.”

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC:  Blind Justice at 10p
PAX:  Lie Detector at 9p
Univision:  Apuesta por un Amor at 8p

The Golf Channel and the LPGA have renewed their deal through 2009 with at least 10 tour events in the US and Canada, with additional bcst rights in the UK and Japan. Included in the deal are the exclusive rights to the Solheim Cup (the LPGA version of the Ryder Cup).  Other special events, when included in the Tour schedule, will also be carried on Golf, such as the Women’s World Cup of Golf and ADT Championship. Golf Channel UK will pick up LPGA events formerly carried by Sky Sports.

Lie Detector debuts tonight on Pax TV at 9p, and features people you’ve probably heard of defending themselves against various allegations.  For instance, tonight’s ep includes Paula Jones and Robert Smitty (the guy who donated his kidney via an internet ad and says he received no money for it). Hosting the series is Rolanda Watts, and polygraph expert Dr. Edward Gelb with loads of initials after his name, conducts the tests. Lie Detector is produced by Mark Phillips Philms & Telephision.

CMT‘s debut of Dukes of Hazzard Weekend last Sat/Sun drew a reported 23 million viewers over the course of the weekend, with a high coming on Sunday night at 8p. That hour’s ep drew a 1.2 A18-49 and a 1.5 M18-49.  Dukes settles into its regular time period weekdays at 7p.

TV Guide will launch its latest original series Look-A-Likes this Saturday with a mini-marathon of six back to back eps beginning at 6p. The show focuses on regular folk who happen to look a lot like a noted celebrity, and then makes them over to truly look like a celebrity mirror image.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Food Network has ordered a second season of Iron Chef America with 14 new eps.  Alton Brown returns as “food historian, scientist and commentator” with Kevin Brauch doing the play by play action.

Fox has four 60m eps of a project called Who Wants to Live Forever (Zig Zag Prods), . The show goes on the premise that once people have a clear picture of how long (or short) they are expected to live, they are willing to make sometimes drastic changes in their lifestyles.  Each ep begins with medical experts conducting tests to approximate the participant’s life expectancy.  Once established, enter a a team of experts – doctors, nutritionists, etc. – to help individuals change their lifestyles to lengthen their life expectancy.   The show will be debuting soon in the UK on BSkyB’s Sky One.

Sarah Jessica Parker and her production banner Pretty Matches Prods., have signed a deal with HBO to develop new long and short form programming.

WB has ordered a pilot called Bow (Touchstone TV) from rapper Bow Wow, who will star as himself.  (Bow Wow has a talent deal in place with the WB network.)

* CASTING UPDATES *

ABC:

  • Pros and Cons (Touchstone TV/Bad Robot) from JJ Abrams, a drama project about a group of con artists now working for the FBI, has added Paul Blackthorne to the lineup that already includes Natasha Henstridge and William Baldwin.
  • Soccer Moms (Touchstone TV) has added Rob Estes as the husband of one of the soccer moms, played by Gina Torres and Kristen Davies, who in their spare time are private investigators.
  • Commander in Chief (Touchstone TV/Battle Plan Prods) starring Geena Davis as the President, has added another to the cast – Julie Ann Emery as a Secret Service Agent. The cast also includes Kyle Secor, Ever Carradine, Caitlin Wachs and Henry J. Lennix.

CBS:

  • Regina King has been added to the cast of The Unit (20th), a drama pilot about the lives of the people and families in a Special Ops unit
  • Quantico (Touchstone TV/Paramount Network TV) has cast Thomas Gibson as a member of the FBI unit focused on behavioral analysis.
  • Brent Spiner joins the cast of Threshold (Paramount Network TV), a sci-fi drama about the threat of alien lifeforms.  Carla Gugino and Charles Dutton have been previously cast.

NBC:

  • E-Ring (Warner Bros TV / Jerry Bruckheimer TV) has added Dennis Hopper to the lineup, which already includes Leonor Varela, Benjamin Bratt, Sarah Clarke, Aunjanue Ellis.  E-Ring takes place inside the Pentagon.

FOX:

  • Joely Fisher and Matt Letscher have signed to star in the net’s untitled drama pilot set in a fertility clinic, from 20th TV and Imagine TV and writers/producers Sean Jablonski and Jason Katims.  (This project should not be confused with NBC’s project, same setting, titled Inconceivable).
  • Briar & Graves (20th / Adelstein-Parouse Prods), the drama pilot about exploring unexplained religious phenomena, has cast Elizabeth Rohm and Charles Mesure as the priest and investigator.  Also cast are Dondre Whitfield, Angel Desai and Graham Beckel.

WB:

  • Jennifer Esposito will join Laura San Giacomo in WB’s untitled drama pilot about four sisters living in NYC and making their way in love and careers. The project is from Liz Tuccillo, produced by Warner Bros. TV and Classic IV Prods.
  • Pepper Dennis (20th) has added Brooke Burns and Rider Strong, who join Rebecca Romijn in the title role, and Lindsay Price as her best friend. Pepper Dennis is a Chicago based reporter, and this show revolves around her work, her life and her family.
  • Grown Men (Sony Pictures TV) has cast Dan Cortese and John DiMaggio, who will join Dean Cain.  Grown Men is about five frat brothers reuniting more than a decade after college years.  This project carries a cast contingent restriction.

UPN:

  • Wildlife (Paramount/Axelrod/Edwards and UPN) has cast James Stevenson, completing the series regulars (Denise Richards, Lauren German, Eric Balfour, Omar Benson Miller, Tamara Taylor). Wildlife is about a group of twentysomething friends living in Hollywood’s Silverlake area.

Sci Fi:

  • Carmen Electra has joined the cast of Sci Fi Channel’s animated series Tripping the Rift (IDT Film Roman), scheduled to debut season #2 in July. Electra’s role will be the voice of Six, a brilliant love slave and the most advanced android ever created.  Tripping the Rift follows the adventures of Jupiter 42, a smuggling vessel led by a purple alien named Chode and his band of merry misfits.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Scripps Networks held its upfront press briefing yesterday. In his comments, Scripps Net Prez John Lansing also talked briefly about the potential of Spanish-language programming.  He cautioned plans are only in the ‘conversation’ stage, and said Scripps was looking at a chance to experiment with something less than a 24/7 project, maybe just an one hour of programming a day to start, either with a current in-house program or Scripps may develop an equity position with another network (bcst or cable, he was not specific) or syndicator with a new project.   As to Scripps current and upcoming plans with its five cable nets, several new programs for each of the Scripps nets are forthcoming, many starting in the next few weeks.

HGTV:

  • Get Color premieres March 18 at 8pm with designer Jane Lockhart tackling rooms that are, well, color challenged.
  • I Want That! kicks off on April 3 at 830p, and is described as a program showcasing innovations for the home that are so new, they almost haven’t happened yet.
  • Off Beat America debuts on July 10 at 10p and takes viewers to the nooks and crannies of America they never knew existed, to see things they never imagined, and to meet the people behind them.
  • Small Space Big Style joins the schedule on August 4 at 8p. For this one, the title says it all – decorating in tight quarters to maximize the space and creativity.
  • Cash in the Attic has a September premiere date, and that’s when host John Scencio and expert appraiser Tim Luke will begin foraging through people’s attics in search of lost treasures and heirlooms.
  • My First Place will join the primetime schedule in October, and it’s everything about moving into your first home, with Jill Cordes hosting. Couples, families and/or single homeowners will get a little help from expert designers who’ll provide solutions to everyday problems.

FOOD:

  • Take It Off debuts March 11 at 10p and features Juan Carlos Cruz helping people with their weighty food issues … literally.  Working with a team of nutritionists and trainers, Cruz teaches people to adjust their eating habits.
  • Good Deal with Dave Lieberman kicks off on April 16 at 130p.  Lieberman will teach viewers to eat and entertain like a king, on a pauper’s budget.
  • The Next Food Network Star premieres in June with host Marc Summers who scrounges the countryside in search of this network’s next big star. The ultimate winner will get his or her own 6-episode series, starting next September.
  • Rachel Ray’s Tasty Travels is back on the road looking for the best food deals in cities across the US – oysters at 2am in Boston, a burger for a buck in NYC.
  • Food Network also has four pilots in the works: Lady & Sons is the story behind the counter at Paula Deen’s Savannah restaurant, which will now be overseen by her sons; Restaurant Re-Vamp finds chef Bobby Flay helping to turn around a failing eatery; Behind the Bash follows Giada de Laurentis to a behind the scenes look at putting on a seriously huge dinner (we’re talking hundreds of guests); and Sweet Tooth, a show dedicated to dessert.

DIY: Do-It-Yourself Network has more than a dozen new series coming to air this spring, summer and fall, so here are just a few:

  • Trade School debuts April 3 at 9p and is shot like a documentary, but per the network mantra, always with plenty to take away.  The show follows people as they learn how to get the hands-on know-how they need to get the kind of job they’ve always wanted – a fine woodworker, an expert plumber, an auto mechanic.
  • Barkitecture debuts in 4th qtr and is brings the right dog into the right home, including preparing for the dog’s arrival with supplies and puppy- or dog-proofing the house.
  • From Junky to Funky (4th qtr 2005) embraces the concept “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”  Using castaways from tag sales or garbage heap items, the designers in this show find promising pieces for total room makeovers.
  • The Whole Picture (4th qtr 2005) delves into the world of digital photography and takes it out of the dark room, demonstrating and illustrating from the basics and the advantages, to the enhancements and the printing.

FINE LIVING NETWORK

  • A handful of new shows coming to Fine Living this spring, including Auction Adventure, America’s Dream 18: Arnold Palmer, Raising the Bar, Catalog This and Dwell, among others. Catalog This is a competition between two teams attempting to furnish a room creatively via catalog shopping.  Dwell, produced in conjunction with the magazine of the same name, takes a step in the contemporary design direction, illustrating how contemporary doesn’t necessarily mean sterile or cold.

GREAT AMERICAN COUNTRY (acquisition of this net finalized last November):

  • GAC will come back with many of its well-received series this year including, but clearly not limited to: Grand Ole Opry Live airing on Saturday nights with host Nan Kelley; GAC Top 20 Country Countdown asks viewers to vote for their favorite videos on GACTV.com; Fast Forward with radio personality Chris Conn, this show looks ahead to the newest video releases; Ont he Edge of Country features alternative country music styles with host Kylie Harris.

The Independent Film Channel has signed a deal with the Grammy-winning band Green Day and its music label Reprise Records.  Under the agreement IFC will weave Green Day’s hit song Jesus of Suburbia (American Idiot album), into the fiber of the network throughout 2005. The music will be included in IFC’s on- and off-air promotions, show opens/closes for original programming and possibly as the musical base for a film festival featuring works by viewers and inspired by the song.  Evan Shapiro, GM/EVP, IFC explained that Green Day, “[is] the musical personification” of the network’s mission to “serve as a safe-haven for free, independent thought.”  IFC is a non-commercial network and the partnership will not include the airing of the music video or any commercial involvement, but rather as a way to convey both the message of the song/album and that of the network.  American Idiot album has been likened to the concept albums by bands including The Beatles (Sgt. Pepper/1967); The Who, The Who Sell Out (1967) and Tommy (1969); Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon (1973), among others.

1917 – In Russia, the February Revolution begins in St. Petersburg with riots and strikes stemming from food shortages. The first chapter in the Russian revolution leads to the abdication of Czar Nicholas III a week later. (This paroxysm is known as the February Revolution because Russia then still used the Julian calendar, which was thirteen days behind the Gregorian calendar.)
