Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 7, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Ready, AIM, plug-in…  AOL unveiled its new Open AIM initiative yesterday, which invites developers, online communities, websites, services and so on, to create customized plug-ins, mash-ups and third party applications for use with AIM, AOL’s instant messenger service.  To do this developers etc. can download an AIM Software Development Kit that provides what is needed to deliver real time text, voice and video communications.  Prior to this AOL has been very guarded of AIM and its other services and given it is AOL’s most successful service, the move has surprise some. However, considering the impending competition from every and all angles, it is also considered a strategic move. More info at http://developer.aim.com/

EchoStar Communications Corporation and DISH Network will launch local Hi-Def TV channels in an additional seven US cities including: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Boston, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C.  These cities join the five cities from the first round of launches.

Bolt Media is taking a pro-active step in addressing the issue of kids and social networking by re-launching its website (Bolt.com) and refocusing it to A18-34, while simultaneously launching its new site Bolt2.com for kids, tweens and younger teens.  In dividing younger and older users into two arenas, Bolt Media will be able to attract new advertisers, maintain existing ones, by better deliver the specific audiences they seek.  Both websites allow users to create content, meet people, and play games.  The new Bolt.com, initially launched in 1996 as a teen community, offers new functions including social searches, the ability to post content from the site onto other sites (e.g. Myspace, Xanga, and Livejournal) and increased storage for videos/photos/blogs on personal profiles.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

TEENick will premiere Just for Kicks (f/k/a The Power Strikers) a new soccer-centric series with a special one hour episode on April 9 at 7p.  The next day the one-hour premiere will be available on TurboNick and on Nick VOD that week.  Just for Kids will air regularly on Sundays at 7p.  The series revolves around four athletes from very different background on a winning girls’ team.  Developed/Executive Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, Just for Kicks is produced by Goldberg’s Lil’ Whoop Productions and Brookwell-McNamara Productions, in association with Nickelodeon.  The series launch will be supported on other Nick platforms including a behind the scenes look at the show that will stream on TurboNick and Nick.com beginning March 13, followed by a sneak peek at the first two minutes of the series on TurboNick on March 27.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nick Jr. has begun production in Iceland on the second season LazyTown, and in addition the network has ordered 18 new episodes of the CGI-animated preschool series.  Season two of LazyTown will begin airing in May 2006, weekdays at 12p on Nick Jr., and weekends on Nick on CBS.

4Kids Entertainment, Inc. will head to MIPTV 2006 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-Fast Forward (26 new 30m-eps) and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (52 half hour eps).  TMNT-Fast Forward will bow in the US on 4Kids TV in September 2006, followed by a global launch in 4th qtr. Additionally, the new CGI animated TMNT feature film is slated for release in early 2007.  The movie is produced by Imagi Entertainment and will be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. Pictures and internationally by The Weinstein Company.

Mattel and Live Nation have cast Erin Elizabeth Coors in the role of Barbie in the stage production of Barbie Live in Fairytopia.  The live touring stage production launches April 1 in Columbus, Ohio, at The Palace, and will visit 80+ cities over the next two years.  The show is based on the 2005 direct-to-video Barbie Fairytopia.

THQ Inc. has acquired Juice Games Ltd, the UK-based development studio.  Under the terms of the deal, THQ has purchased the entire share capital of Juice Games. Colin Bell, formerly Juice Games’ Managing Director, will take on the role of GM.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Jakks Pacific, Inc. has inked a licensing agreement with J.K. Benton Design Studio to develop and market girl-focused art activities based on Benton’s It’s Happy Bunny property.  Negotiated by CopCorp Licensing, the worldwide licensing agent for the property, the deal covers products marketed under Jakks’ Flying Colors brands including velvet art activities, velvet posters, room decor, lunch kits and more.  The products are expected launch nationwide in spring 2007.

2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., and Fox TV have signed an exclusive agreement to develop and publish video games based on the animated series Family Guy.  2k Games will work closely with series creator Seth MacFarlane to create the games that are set for release fall 2006.  The games will be developed by High Voltage Software, and will feature the work of show’s writers.  The show is not at all for kids, okay it isn’t really for tweens either but lots of them are watching  and really who can blame them – it is hysterical.

Ruckus, the college digital entertainment network, is offering ad space on its website.  Under its new advertising model, Ruckus offers college students free access to the site and music (a library of 1.5+ million songs) where they can legally download and share music, as well as movies and TV shows for an additional fee.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Gary Yusko has been named CFO, Alloy Inc.  Prior to Alloy, Gary served as the EVP/Financial Operations, Westwood One, Inc.  A generation Y targeted media and marketing company, Alloy, Inc. is a unit of Alloy Media + Marketing.

Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. has reorganized its Consumer Electronics and Licensing Group, centralizing its worldwide sales, management and marketing strategy.

  • Lydie Levy has been promoted to COO/Worldwide Consumer Electronics Licensing Group.  Levy was previously Managing Director/Gemstar-TV Guide Europe.  She will report to Mike McKee, COO/Gemstar-TV Guide and President/Interactive Program Guides.
  • Thomas Carson has been named President/TV Guide On Screen, CE North America; he will report to Mike McKee.  Most recently Carson served as EVP/Program Office, Thomson Corporation.
  • Akitaka Nishimura has been appointed President/Gemstar Multimedia Limited Japan.  Nishimura was most recently GM/ Digital AV Networking Promotion Group, Panasonic.  He will also report to McKee.
  • Additionally, Simon Adams has been upped to SVP/Marketing and Sales CE Worldwide.  He had been Deputy Managing Director for the CE business in Europe.  Adams will report to Levy, as will Erwin Lau, GM/Technology Development Limited in Hong Kong and Jean Francois Grasset, SVP/Technical and Operations.

Stan Glasgow has been named President/COO, Sony Electronics Inc., in the US.  Glasgow was SEL’s President/Consumer Sales Company, heading up the US retail and consumer direct sales effort.  Glasgow officially takes his new post on April 1, succeeding Hideki “Dick” Komiyama, who will now serve as Chairman of the Board, SEL, as well as maintaining his role as Corporate EVP/Senior GM, Sony Corporation heading up global sales and marketing.
