Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 5, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

With FOX Sports set to unveil its new national sports channels today, Regis Philbin got the ball rolling early, confirming reports that he was going to host a new sports talk series for the channel, that would echo ABC’s The View. In fact, it was on the The View yesterday where the longtime daytime staple laid it all out. “Fox is starting a sports channel. Everybody is starting a sports channel now-you know-nothing but 24 hours of sports,” he said. “So Regis is going to have a show on that.”

On the Air

The red-hot Chicago Blackhawks drove NBC to its highest ratings ever for a single regular season game on Sunday (with the exception of the Winter Classics), pulling a 1.6 overnight rating, according to Nielsen. The matchup against the Red Wings also drew a 9.7 score in Chicago. The national score is up 60% over the equitable game a year ago, which drew a 1.0 overnight for the Bruins and Rangers.

The NHL locked in plans for its annual draft, announcing that all 14 teams that miss the playoffs (or the teams that hold the rights their picks) will now be eligible to win the No. 1 draft pick with a revised lottery that will be held on April 29. Previously, only the five teams with the fewest points could earn the pick. Meanwhile, all seven rounds of the draft will be held at the Prudential Center this year on June 30.

Following a strong start to the season with Daytona, NASCAR followed it up a 5.3 overnight score for FOX’s NASCAR race on Sunday, which is up 6% versus year-ago numbers.

ESPN is on deck this week with the 2013Championship Week Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, that will showcase 85 women’s college basketball games from Wednesday through Sunday across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 and include title games from the ACC, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Pac-12 and the SEC. ESPN3 will offer exclusive coverage of 20 conference tournament games, as well as another 45 contests available in local markets via syndication, for a total of 65 games. ESPNU will air 18 games, including 10 title matches, and ESPN2 will be the home to four NCAA Championship berths. The action begins March 6 at noon with the Atlantic Sun Quarterfinals.

MLB Network is tapping Fran Charles to serve as a host and reporter for the channel’s studio programming. Charles, who most recently served as a studio host of NFL Network, will make his MLB Network debut on World Baseball Classic Today this Saturday, March 9 at 5a.

Sirius XM Radio is adding Adam Schein to its lineup on Mad Dog Radio where he will host Schein on Sports on weekdays from 10a-2p. He replaces Bruce Murray who is sliding over to the NFL Radio Channel.

Philadelphia’s Comcast SportsNet will launch new series Philly Sports Talk on April 8 at 5p. The series will air weekdays and be hosted by Michael Barkann, who will look to cover trending topics in local sports and around the world.

Hearty congratulations to Cliff Drysdale, who has been elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Drysdale has worked with ESPN since the network’s very first tennis telecast: the U.S. vs. Argentina in Davis Cup action on September 14, 1979. The Class of 2013 Induction Ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 13, at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.

The National Rifle Association is going on a branding offensive, announcing that the organization will serve as the title sponsor of the April 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Texas.

The home of the LA Galaxy, Chivas USA and the US national team is no more. The Home Depot Center is undergoing a name change and will now be known as the StubHub Center starting this June. The first matchup in the renamed venue will be on June 19 when the Galaxy and Timbers face off.

Time Warner Cable is partnering with the University of Kentucky in a multi-year sponsorship with the UK Men’s Basketball and Football teams. TWC will serve as an Official Sponsor across the school’s core video, high speed data, Wi-Fi and home phone products and services with courtside signage as well as video and LED Ribbon Board.

Digital Fields

Sports social media publishing platform LockerDome hit a double, announcing that the platform completed a $6 million Series A funding round led by Cultivation Capital Growth Fund, and had passed the 10 million monthly uniques threshold. The venture fund is spearheaded by Square co-founder Jim McKelvey, with participants that include St. Louis Cardinals President and part-owner William DeWitt III,5-time NHL All-Star and Hart Trophy winner Chris Pronger, and a member of the Milwaukee Brewers ownership group,among a number of undisclosed parties.

While the Miami Heat continue to streak, Dwyane Wade is teaming up with two-time Children’s Choice Book Award “Author of the Year” nominee James Patterson for a national online webcast designed to promote reading for children around the world. The event, ONE ON ONE: Fundamentals with Dwyane Wade and James Patterson, will air on April 25, 2013 at 1p and will be available for free to schools, libraries, and for home viewing via www.JamesPattersonEvents.com.

Roster Moves

ESPN promoted Kevin Martinez to Vice President, Corporate Outreach where he will now oversee all aspects of ESPN’s corporate outreach and integrated initiatives including corporate giving, cause marketing and volunteerism. Martinez will also oversee ESPN’s ongoing collaboration with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, including the Jimmy V Classic, Jimmy V Week, and the ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic.

North American Sports Group hired former NBA D-League President Phil Evans as Senior Advisor for its Hoop It 3×3 Property. In addition the company named former Streetball Partners and Advantage International exec Roger Bailey as Senior Director of Business Development across all Grassroots properties, which includes Kick It Soccer, Hoop It Up Basketball and Let It Fly Football.
